When using Inverted T-Budding to graft fruit trees it’s easy to check for graft success. Approximately 4 weeks after grafting use the simple technique shown in this video to see if your grafts succeeded. Check my previous video on the advantages of using Inverted T-Budding over the more traditional T-Budding grafting technique - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpPYnpmcotdmq7s - to know more. 5:20 Your comment about keeping rootstock top growth is very correct and I agree👍. Green foliage above the graft will provide healing nutrients for faster results. When the success wakes up we cut the rootstock several inches above the graft so we have support for the tender shoot. We can remove the stick next year when strong wood has been established. Good grafts can brake even six months after success. So be patient and careful.

@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
It would be better if you grafted your pear variety on a pear rootstock (another pear tree, for instance). Apples and pears usually have low compatibility. Even if the grafts take, they might brake after a couple of years or fail to develop fully, due to delayed incompatibility.

Hi thanks for your great and informative videos, which inspired me on grafting. i have an apple tree at my backyard and trying to graft on it with some different apple varieties. did couple of graftings and taped the grafting portion. also, i covered the scion with a plastic bag. how i gonna check the grafting success and when i need to remove the tape and the bag??? please let me know, thank you.

Very informative video. Once I’ve removed the tape from around the t bud and have checked it, should I wrap it in budding tape again (including the bud) to make sure it’s protected over winter? Also, what about if it’s indoors?
@JSacadura9 ай бұрын
If it's indoors there's no need to protect them again. Outside, if the grafts are still young, I do protect them, so they have a better chance to survive the winter.

Brilliant. Thank you for sharing this video with us. I am one of your subscribers and have seen all your videos. Every time I learn a lot from your videos. Would you please make a video or just answer my questions about success rate related to Grafting location on the tree including budding I mean on the trunk or branches of an established fruit tree and on a branch is it better to graft or bud closer to the trunk or or far from the trunk and can budding be successful on a more than 5 years old trunk or branch ? Another question, in which country do you live ? Just to have an idea about the climate in your place to compare it to my local climate. I live in north west of UK. My last question is if you teach us about grafting knife types where to use a single side blade and tow sided blade knives with different Grafting techniques as well as the best way to sharpen them. Thank you very much.

Hello what can i use to protect t bud grafts i did to my in ground fig tree for the winter?thanks
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
With techniques like whip and tongue I cover the grafted branch with a padded envelope (keeps a mini greenhouse over the graft). With this type of graft I usually graft potted rootstocks and place them inside for the winter. In the field, keeping the bud covered with parafilm (its breathable) is usually enough.
@hieuqldd073 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. Can you share how to graft avocado trees, and what is the survival rate of the grafts?
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
I don't have avocado trees in my orchard, so I can't do a video on grafting them. But most of the techniques shown in my videos, using scions or buds, will work (like this one) and they usually have a good success rate.

I'm always interested in follow up videos. Thank you very much. Was there any success difference between using para film and plastic bag strips?
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Parafilm is a bit more forgiving on the buds (it stretches a bit more and its breathable). With the plastic strips you have to be more careful as you can damage the buds and you can't keep them for too long when covering the whole graft. But you can get away with both options, if used well, for this type of graft. Thanks for the comment.

Which month is good for grafting? And thank you for explaining very well.
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
This type of graft can be done in the spring, summer or fall. It works as long as the sap is flowing and the bark is easily opened. Most grafting techniques are used around spring (March were I live), when trees are leaving dormancy.

@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
I have a small rocky patch of land that used to be a small vineyard. Sometimes, the old rootstock's root system, starts to grow and can be grafted successfully. The problem is they are not in the best location (for caring, watering, etc..), so I rarely use them.

@maozedung72703 жыл бұрын
You could collect some in the neighborhood if someone has a superbe fruit tree in the garden. An other possibility is to ask for material at an agriculture research institute....
@Infiniti253 жыл бұрын
Visit your local allotments where people will likely be willing to cut some scion for you to try grafting. Also in the UK, there are grafting lessons by groups who may or may not be affiliated with the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society). Failing that visit a garden centre or order online for a new variety for you to use as a donor if you just want practice, or to keep and create your own multi-variety fruit trees. Also check out social media groups in your area for gardeners, allotments and small farms who may also be willing to share or at least point you in the right direction. Also seen some fruit trees in UK in shops like Aldi and Lidl at certain times of year so if you are in Europe, check those out too.

I have a question - at 5:40 when you cut back the rootstock, the graft is growing off at an angle. Does this not affect the overall shape of the tree later on? Will it straighten up afterwards? Kindly show updates if possible.
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
Not really. The main branch in the final tree will grow vertically and after a few years the graft area is almost imperceptible. You can see a few examples on older videos. I will try to make a follow-up video to show this tree development.

@Klejnotnilu6663 жыл бұрын
@@Okeflora.6480 you can try but chance of succeeding is a bit small since peach and pear is genetically different(prunus-pyrus). I would rather try whip and tongue or bark grafting since it works for apples on pear tree and they are also genetically different (malus-pyrus). You can do more research or just try if you have possibility and time. I hope I could help you ;)

Is it okay to leave the plastic tape on the graft over the winter for protection and remove it in the spring, when the tree become active growing?
@JSacadura3 жыл бұрын
Yes, since the bud won't be growing in the winter, you can leave the plastic as a protection. Beware that, in some situations, humidity can creep inside the plastic and fungus can develop which might ruin the graft.

Sir, I would like to ask you a question. I have about 40 frontenac vines, that I’m not real fond of the wine it produces. I would like to switch them to another cultivar. My question is this, can I bud graft onto the main stem in the spring, then allow the vine to grow till I’m sure the graft has taken, before I trim the tops off? It seems like that would be a safe way to do it, but would like your opinion! Thoroughly enjoy all your videos and content! Thank you!
