Great batch. I would go for simcoe + citra + mosaic for dry hopping. Could play well with the simcoe first addition and the spices from the saaz.

Don't need to do long boils these days with the quality of modern malts (unless you use some horrid American 6 row stuff). Less DMS to boil off now. Shorter boils save some time at the cost of more hops.

Nice video as always! I checket my G40 this weekend and found that the sightglass is off by about 0,5 liters measured without the grainbasket in. When the sightglass says 30 liters, it´s really at 29,5.

Hi Griffo, well done, well done. I really enjoy your videos. One thing though rests on my mind after having watched this video: Did you use only one package of the S-189 yeast for your 20l batch? Did it turn out well? There's so much knowledge exchange about yeast handling, and most people seem to say you need double the amount of dry yeast if it's for low temperatures... Did you simply use one package and just sprinkle it on the cold wort? Did it turn out well? Cheers, Roman.

Nice one bud cracking brewday one day I’ll upgrade my system, I’ll be the same won’t want to part with thre G30. I bought the new GF heater and use that for brew in a bag, normally use it for simple and quick brews. Love the new addition to the brewery Barley, he’ll won’t be touching the G40 with his snout anymore.

G40 is interesting me for the same reason. Split batches using different yeasts and hops. Dry hop the S04 batch with Ernest. I have really enjoyed this hop recently and think the gooseberry type flavours will go well in light beer. Just about to keg a golden Ale dry hopped with Ernest.

Keep those videos coming Griffo. I've upgraded from the G30 to the G40 and I need to sort out steam extraction. I'm impressed with you hood set up, could you tell me the size of hood you use and have you made any mods to it? Also, do you use an inline fan? Appreciate your advice Griffo.

Are you not step mashing? I like imitating the Classic German schedule as much as possible..even mashing in low at 130F, then slowly raising and pausing in the low mid 140’s for 30-45, then upper 150’s, same, then mashout.
@HomebrewGriffo2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don’t believe it’s necessary with today’s modern malts. Much higher quality controlled than the classic days, removing the need for different extraction temps. In my opinion

@@HomebrewGriffo well..ppl like Gordon Strong still do..and I’ve seen experiments where ppl go by the iodine test, although all it shows is if conversion hasn’t finished, because even when it shows finished, at say 60 minutes, the sugar continues to rise for the 60-90 minute mark. Just because modern malts are easily converted doesn’t mean you won’t get better results or rather more control by step mashing, we still influence the sugar profiles by step mashing. I don’t understand why there’s such a rush..the modern machines give you so much control, what’s 20 or 30 more minutes? Yes, I’m remembering an Oktoberfest/Marzen interview with Gordon Strong, he said “yes, technically you can make most any beer with a single infusion mash, but that’s not to say it won’t be better with a more traditional mashing technique..” or something to that effect…

Great content as always Griffo! Can’t wait to see more of the dog too 😂. Just taken the plunge myself into larger batch home brewing (using the brewtank system from darkfarm). Almost pulled the trigger on the g40 after watching your unboxing / first brew but thought I’d support a local ish welsh business. Learnt lots watching your “back catalogue” so thanks for that and look forward to seeing what you brew up next.

How are you finding the Brew Tank? I've had one in the basket for weeks now but haven't press the pay button!
@alexanderjames64932 жыл бұрын
@@j0hnb0y1000 hey, overall I love it. I’ve done three brews on it now so relatively familiar with its quirks. 1. The tri clamps make cleaning so easy, being able to pull everything apart quickly is nice. 2. It’s so modular, it’s brewed some great beers “out of the box” so to speak but having the ability to upgrade/change at your own convenience is nice. For example I’m upgrading the element/pump control to a Pid unit from inkbird whilst I wait for DarkFarm to release theirs. When this is done, it’s very comparable to the claw hammer supply system biab system. The only part that I’ve had trouble with is the included hoses (they would collapse on me under heat). Easily rectified with some nice thick silicone hoses from the malt miller for not much money. Would highly recommend reaching out to Gareth from DarkFarm if you have any further questions, great guy and always willing to help (he might even give you a sneak peek of what is in development in terms of accessories ;) ) If you’ve got any more specific questions feel free to fire them over. More than happy to put up a short video of the system running on my next brewday too if that would be helpful? Alex
@j0hnb0y10002 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderjames6493 nice one Alex, thanks for the info. The lack of controller is a massive drawback for me so that's awesome to hear they're producing a PID unit. The Grainfather G40 looks good but as you say, the flexibility of the Brew Tank is super appealing.
@alexanderjames64932 жыл бұрын
@@j0hnb0y1000 in fairness the inkbird it ships with isn’t that bad at maintaining temps, far from perfect but I’ve had no I’ll effects at all with my brews! The new Pid I’m going using isn’t that expensive (£100 ish) from inkbird (but does mean requiring to use us style plugs. So I certainly wouldn’t let that put you off :)

Cracking vid as always. What efficiencies are you getting with the G40? The defaults in the Grainfather and Brewfather apps seem to be questionable ...
@HomebrewGriffo3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Owen, I haven't nailed down an efficiency yet and I think the questionable results are because it depends a lot on batch size 10L-40L and sparge/no sparge combinations. Tough to land on an equipment efficiency with that sort of variables I suppose.
