Grandma Gloria, I am 67 year old man and my favorite pie is still sweet potato pie. You are the first person I have seen other than my mother, put lemon in her SP pies. She called it her "secret" ingredient. When we would attend a family reunion or a Church Homecoming, everyone would get my mom's desserts first. I can still remember my paternal Aunts talking to her about why Her's tasted better than theirs. She passed away back in 2004, and out of the six kids, only my older sister, my younger sister, and I know the secret. I will pass it on to my 8 grandchildren. Great job on the video.

My mom did the same, no spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. She also added a touch of almond extract. When she died, I could NOT find her recipe anywhere, even though she gave it to me several times. It was all in her head, never wrote it down. A year or so after she passed, I was in the attic on Christmas Eve, looking for a dessert tray, when lo and behold, I found the recipe on a 3x5” card. She was giving me my Christmas gift, I’m convinced.

She said she would normally have larger sweet potatoes than the sweet potatoes she is using to make these pies and mentioned that because she has extra sweet potato batter, she is using a total of 5 eggs, opposed to 4 as she would normally use. I'm paying attention, because my grandmother never did like repeating herself twice and she had to repeat herself, that posed to be a problem, lol. Love this woman and her way of old school baking. I've been using Grandma Gloria's sweet potato pie recipe for a few years now. 💯 💯 💯 Winner every time. The measurements are a good basic guideline, but you have to learn to taste as you go and cook from your heart. Grandma Gloria said, "it should look like cake batter and taste like ice cream." That's soul food.

Wow! I believe this was THE BEST! Thank you Grandma Gloria! This was a big hit on Thanksgiving! Learned something new about boiling and beating out the strands, and adding lemon extract. YUM! I also added some grated lemon zest (I needed the fresh lemon juice for something else.). I made the filling only since I'd already made 2 gluten free doughs and didn't want to make and roll another pie dough. The oven was at 350° since there was no crust. GG's note in a comment way down was: "Bake at 375 and do your first check 50 min. And when you see a glaze on top it is time to remove from the oven."

7/8/23: This was about the best sweet potato pie video I've ever seen. You were so down to earth, and your instructions were informative and right on point. (I didn't know about the strands or the lemon extract.) I felt like I was right there in the kitchen with you, but I wish I could have tasted your pie in the end. It looked so yummy! 🙂 Anyway, I'm on my way to the market in a few to get the pie crusts. I have everything else, so I'm on a mission. Thank you so much Grandma Gloria for this wonderful recipe! I love Grandma Gloria's recipes. You can feel the love that's put into her cooking. I read much further down that you should bake these at 375 degrees and check after 50 minutes for a glaze on top. If you roast your potatoes whole without cutting anything, you won't have any strings at all and it candies the sweet potato so beautifully, like when you eat a baked sweet potato and it's no strings it has the same effect on sweet potato pies. 🌻🌻
