So you simply have to buy Intel Ultra 7/9, perform a bunch of updates, then payout for DDR8400 of CUDIMM RAM and then overclock drawing more power and creating more heat, just to slightly beat a 2-year old X3D chip with DDR6000 ram that nominally pulls 88W of power? Amazing. Real progress.

Well, most of this is BS. The 285 is not a direct competitor to X3D chips. They compete against the non-X3d like 9950X. That's a correct comparison. Intel doesnt make special gaming CPUs like AMD does. So they will always lose. If you game only, go for X3D. If you also use your CPU for work, then check both 285 and 9950 so see what best fits you. These gaming benchs are just BS.

at half the price. it's also AI-ready, which might be important for the 50 series GPUs which will utilize neural rendering, something the NPUs on the Ultra series may help with. it should be noted also that for Zen 6, AMD is also planning to move to a similar architecture for their chips, in fact, they already have some out for laptops that are very similar to intel's ultra series chips. they call them Ryzen AI. they even have a similar naming scheme: such as Ryzen AI HX370 and HX375.

285k price at newegg when I checked just now: $600. 7800X3D: $475. 265k: $380. So, you're not talking about price. cinebench r24? r23? not sure. Anyway, mt points per watt, 285k: 11.4, 265k: 11.9, 7800x3d: 16.2. So you're not talking about performance/watt. The core ultras are high-end midrange business chips, for gaming the gaming chips leave them for dead, for business/media/engineering use the core ultras leave the gaming chips for dead. No surprise there, but the thing is, AMD also makes business/media/engineering chips. The "right" 285k comparison would be the 9950x, they're neck-and-neck on price *and* performance. Well, except for gaming, the 9950x wins there. But for professional use? A 7980x that saves just 10min/day will pay for itself in less to much less than a year… and a 7980x blows by a 285k like it was standing still. Literally: it gets work done twice as fast. That's not any paltry 10min/day.

What, that AMD also makes business/media/engineering consumer chips, which are the right chips to compare with Intel's business/media/engineering consumer chips? That was my point. If you think the 285k can beat the 9950x now, okay, thanks for making my point for me: right or wrong, that would be the right comparison for the 285k, not the ridiculous matchup against gaming chips being proposed here.

It's not that Arrow Lake is bad, it's just that it's undercooked and requires a new standard of RAM to run at its best. I got my ultra 7 265k from micro center for 229.99 on Black Friday one of their major bundle deals. Ended up getting that and a AsRock 890m riptide motherboard for 179.99. I’m a 32 year old I game and also use my computer for any content creation i use for social media from any family trips. I’ve always liked the multi thread performance of Intel. I feel like it’s not a bad cpu depending on the deal, right now the deals aren’t as good as they were before the holidays! Coming from a 13600F the performance gains are nice. I have a smaller build cause my desk is in our bedroom which something I’m not hearing much talked about is the power efficiency. Getting more performance as well as staying 13 degrees cooler than my prior cpu which is something that I think is huge. Are room in the house is in the attic that we redid so it’s the hottest room in the house. So the fact that I can play maxing everything out, and stay at a cool 39 degrees C is something I’ll take over the most power hungry maxing out fps cpu any day 😅

@ Cache is super important, as it's not hitting memory as much. CUDIMMS give decent gains for a reason, and the memory controller is on a separate tile. The problem with the reviews comparing to the x3d chip is that nobody shows frame time graphs. Intel and even non x3d chips will always tend to be smoother to a certain degree and have more consistent frame times, even with lower fps. Its the only reason im hesitant to go for an X3D chip. What tends to happen is the X3D chips have much higher highs comparatively and so it skews the lows, yet if you have the whole frame time graph, you'd see that it is a much more variable experience. Now i understand that this is a claim in which needs proof, and I have the proof based on other peoples testing. The problem is that reviwers dont show these things and so im having a difficult time proving it to not be true as a trend with the X3D chips. Otherwise id be on it right now, its quite a problem especially when theres a fat premium on the cache chips. Average and 1% lows just arent enough to tell the whole story 🤷🏻‍♂️...

Hopefully we see an average of ~15% increase in performance as the lack of hyperthreading is impacting Intels CPUs in a number of titles. It’s amazing how Intel pushed hyperthreading, then had massive security issues / vulnerabilities with it, now is resorting to pre-hyperthreading style CPUs again …… but we do need intel to close the gap a bit, otherwise AMD will offer less next generation in their CPUs in terms of performance.

It's not really the loss of HT the issue, it's that there is only 8 P cores, and the other threads got replaced by much slower Ecores. If they had taken the silicon space to get 12 P cores instead that could have been better. But they aimed for the max number of threads they could cram in there.

Man why the clickbait....Intel promised a "performance fix" somewhere in Jan this year it is still NOT out yet. This is pretty misleading title. Who plays at 720p? If you can afford a 265k or 285k those people most likely have a 1440p or 4k monitor/tv and there you will see a far smaller gap in fps compared to AMD chips. For me smooth gameplay is more important then jittery, stuttering gameplay who cares if a chip can do 500fps vs 400fps on Arrow Lake...Would love to see another review once the BIOS update is life from Intel and pls include 1440p and 4k fps numbers together with 720p or 1080p numbers this will give the viewer a better understanding.

I also don't care much about the x3d chips because honestly.. aside from serious competitive gamers, who still games at 1080p in 2025? Most people now game at 4K which is dominated more so by the GPU than the CPU. I will not deny that the 9800x3D outvalues any current Intel CPU based on ALL specs however, since other areas such as temperature and power draw can be a serious thing to evaluate. Currently, due to shortages of the AMD x3d chips, and the fact that the 9900x is already a bit older than the core ultra series, if I were to upgrade right now, there's a good chance I'd go for the core ultra series, after sticking with AMD for 11 years. But maybe I'll just wait to see what AMD brings out next, depending on when that will be. Not really looking to wait till the end of 2025 or early 2026. the peoblem i think about that is people think cpus are only made for gaming and forgot how much 13700K, 14700K, 265K.. BEATS the hell out of those X3D chips In content creation for less price while still giving more than decent price. Specially with lower price in my country for example. 9800X3D while it does have decent points in content creation its still killed by 13600K. Same content creation power. LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE. At least in my country. Its 190$ Yet I know what people will reply to me. Yes not all of people care about video editing or those stuff. And the X3D chips will remain the BEST for gaming. [Also imo the 9900x and 9950x and even 7950x and their X3D equivalent is overpriced it just has good power draw.] I just HATE that the side of content creation being forgotten in cpu compares sometimes But hey. 7:17 ... see what I mean?

Well, I don't create any content myself. I do use CPU-cores when e.g. compressing/uncompressing files and doing scans with Windows Defender. But my CPU mostly do work for gaming (1440P/4K) and also CPU-donation via the BOINC-program. I agree with you that the "X3D" - CPU:s are overpriced for my user-case and less performing in overal desktop usage. Br

@@03chrisv "The 285K is a creator cpu". The only thing that distinguishes it is the igpu, which helps with editing and the timeline, providing its codecs. You will never render with the cpu or the igpu, it's too slow and too costly. You will use your RTX 4090 or your discrete gpu, because it is way faster and does it using lower power consumption.. I have had a 13900K and a 14900K. The 13900k came up with all kinds of issues after a certain moment in its life when it started degrading. Intel did not accept responsibility for the issues of their processors until very late. So I changed almost everything (psu, ram, ssd) trying to see what was causing the blue screens and the restarts. I decided to trust them again and upgrade to a 14900k, applied all limits from the start. Same things in a lower degree happened with it because until Intel owned up the issue they had not launched a patch to decrease the voltage that was the thing causing the issue. Now I have to return this cpu too. From what I am hearing the new series still have issues and their motherboards will not support the next generation. They also have issues in gaming performance, so now please tell me, why should I be the beta tester and waste my money and my time on companies that do not respect their customers regardless of the name (Intel, AMD, Nvidia and so on)? Besides you can still get a 9950x3d which is the direct competitor to the 285K. I only mentioned the 9800x3d because it does great in multicore tests. Imagine what a 9950x3d can do.
