Recently after watching a video by Goliad Farms I was inspired to give Hornwort a try.
Hornwort is a super fast growing floating plant that can act really well to remove nitrates from cichlid tanks.

Awesome video Blake! Hornwort shedding its leaves is very true. Another downside I've experienced from keeping hornwort is that hornwort sometimes takes up TOO much nutrients, and then other plants don't get any left. Very well explained, keep it up! 👍

Glad you warned me about it killing other plants, because I was about to plant it with about eight other plants in my new 55. That would’ve ruined my week. I heard all about how great the hornwort was about ripping nitrates from the water column, and it seemed perfect for overstocking guppies to breed.

I keep it and I’ve never had issues with it. I’m not doubting the validity of it giving off a chemical to dominate waterways, it’s INVASIVE as all get out lol. But I’m keeping it now with tons of other plants. It’s all about balance, and you will have to trim it often or it will choke out the light for everything else.

I have watched and read several videos and articles, all have sing the praises of hornwort for breeding fish and shrimp. I think only one other talked about the hornwort sucking up nutrients at the expense of the other plants and animals, and your video has been the only resource I have encountered so far that discussed the allopathic properties and the needles shredding.... Thank you....

val is said to release the same chemicals as well so they may be immune to each other :D

I have 2 tanks. A small 50 litre and a bathtub i have set up in the back yard as a way to attract frogs (has some guppies in it to keep down mosquitos, thats all). The little tank gets a heap of natural sun on the back patio, and i have had a real filamentous algae problem. It coats itself over all the plants and suffocates them. But i had a piece of hornwort given to me by a local breeder when i bought some shrimp, and it is the only plant in the tank pretty much 100% unaffected by algae. I just assumed it was outcompeting it, but knowing that it emits something that kills off other plants that makes more sense now. My bathtub pond is only new so it hasn't reached a proper equilibrium yet, and it gets full sun so algae is also a problem. Its a planted tank, i just had Vallisneria and some red root floaters, and the algae was causing me real headaches with those plants. Nitrates have been creeping up as well. I have just dumped a bit of hornwort in there, hoping it helps clean up both the nitrates and the algae. Funnily enough the local aquariums don't sell it over the counter. Maybe its illegal haha. I asked for it, and the dude had to go "out back" and get some out of a pond they had going behind the store

With regular water changes, hornwort doesn't harm other plants. Did not know that it had this property, though. Thx.

I wish I had seen your great video on hornwort as I wish I hadn't bought some for my tanks as they are heavily planted and didn't realise what you said hornwort does by killing other plants lucky because still hadn't put it in my tank thanks will not be adding it 👍

I am in Thailand... I just got my hornwort free out of the river near my house. I think its a different variety to yours as it's very dark green. Your kind is nicer looking... but they don't sell it here in the fish shops.

I bought some off of Amazon and they are very very dark. The ends are more compressed too if that makes sense. The leaves/pine needle looking things are clumped together like a cat tail more than what these in the video look. I'm very much a beginner so I may be making a fool of myself, I dont know lol just was kinda concerned but put it in my tank anyway. I only have one gar and two sculpin right now, just gonna keep an eye on them

Really informative video! I still cant decide if I want a plant in my cichlid tank or keep it with no lights and just use matrix. I was given hornwort, got some cabomba too and some kind of hygrophila that is pretty big too. All are said to that could work but I like to keep my PH around 9 and pretty high buffering too, so maybe if all I want is stability I dont need plants as they ll be causing even more fluctuations in water parameters, right? I already went crazy in my development for infinite daphnia/moina/rotifer to cycle food and it's splendid so far! thanks for those videos they are pretty nice to watch!

My hornwort is melting i decided to remove it to the substrate and attached it’s bottom with the moss mesh.

Elodea is pretty awesome because it’ll live in a toilet if it has to. It’s pretty hard to kill and the trimmings my chickens love to munch on. (They eat just about anything though so it doesn’t count)

Does the toxin only affect aquatic plants? Just added some hornwort to my 75g paludarium. I didn't realize that hornwort releases a toxin that kills hornwort plants. Thank you for this video.

Great video, have a question about golden wonder killifish 1. Is there a male to female ratio? 2.can they be kept with some platys(idc if they eat the babies) 3, can they go in a 20gallon? 4, can I just have 1 male in there or do they have to be with other golden wonders?

Doesnt need constant like. 8 to 10 hours per day is fine

@@BlakesAquatics Thanks Blake. It is interesting that Duckweed, Vallisneria, and Sagittaria have also been tested and proven to produce allelochemicals. I didn't know that either. I also have those plants with no apparent side effects. Perhaps the amount they produce is insignificant when weekly water changes are done. Good info though, just one more chemical to look out for. When is API coming out with a test kit for allelochemicals?

@@Kilroy1225 i am sure it comes down to waterchanges removing it and readily available fertiliser / nutrients. Its a defence mechanism after all so if theres plenty of nutrients to go around then why use the energy to create this chemical. 👍

I can't seem to grow hornwort in my cichlid tank. Seems to drop needles right away and then die off after few months. Red rooted floaters are doing well though. Not sure why 1 survives n 1 doesn't.

Might be light penetration? Hence why floaters are ok but submerged not
