Given playing conditions in England very few of our batsmen will ever make Top 10/20/50 lists based on averages or runs scored. Cook absolutely should be in any top 20 of that era. As an Englishman I say this all the time. We love to hate the Aussies but when they retire and become commentators or journalists we end up loving most of them. Richie Benaud was one of the very best of all time. Miss him to this day.

While mostly I agree with your list, but I strongly feel that Hashim Amla should make to this list. He has won many tough matches for SA in difficult conditions. While everyone will have their own favorites, in my opinion the top 5 test batters purely from match winning/saving impact is: Lara/Sangakara/Ponting/Kallis/Younis Khan. Great video bdw :)

Kallista scored a lot of runs but he scored them slowly. He was more of a match-saver than a match-winner. I'd rather have someone like Gilchrist who could totally change the course of a match in a session and put it out of reach of the opposition.

The records of Sachin, Greg Chappell, Viv Richards and Gavaskar are virtually indistinguishable from a purely stats point of view. The only difference with Sachin is the length of his career. He played 329 innings vs Chappell with 151. Personally, I think Chappell is highly underated. No-one admits to liking him because of the underarm incident. But, he to me is the most elegant of players.

Steve smith is number 1 by a mile, I’ve never seen another batsmen where the bowling team are completely lost as to how to bowl to him, It’s also how he scored he’s runs he doesn’t just have the best average of any batsmen since Bradman, he often scored his runs when the bowling was good when the batsmen at the other end are getting bowled out. Smith is the main reason Australia remained a good test side after the retirements of Ponting and Clarke, since Clarke retired smith made himself the guy that when Australia get into trouble he really digs in

Impact innings is a subject now a days when t20s introduced also somewhat required for onedays. But in test matches those days it was class, patience and temperament matter. Sehwag is a great player. He has changed the attitude of how to play test matches and his many innings are ever memorised in the test match history book. But we can't ignore the effort of a player who has scored 51 centuries against all test playing nations at their home, at his own country and even in international venues. We know how much pressure was on him during his playing days... Just imagine in a test match in Chennai he was Playing against Pakistan where the bowling greatest Akram, Waqar Yunis, Shoiab Akthar and Saqlain Mushtaq were the there. India was close to victory and Sachin Tendulkar playing on 136. He had severe back pain and he got out. Then the entire team got out of next 17 runs. It's Pakistan's one of the greatest test win. As incredible as Lara’s 400 was, it turned out to be memorable only for the fact that it was a world record score. The match was drawn and will not be remembered other than for Lara’s score. Lara should have declared long before he reached 400 to give his team a realistic chance to dismiss England twice. Would you rather score a big hundred and win the match? Or post a world record personal score in an otherwise forgettable draw? I’m guessing that 99% of players would take the win over the personal milestone. Brian Lara as captain should have put his team first and declared 200 runs and hours earlier. That was a massive error of judgement on his part and, in my opinion, points to a level of personal greed and selfishness. Compare that to Mark Taylor (also captain) who declared on 334 not out against Pakistan, only needing one more run to post what would have been the highest individual score by an Australian, and a handful of runs short of what would have been the highest individual score in test cricket. Instead, he put his team first and declared the innings closed when he thought that his team had enough runs, in order to chase a win. His innings is still remembered for his personal selflessness. Yes that match also ended up a draw, but the mindset of each player (both captains) is totally contrasting. One seemed focused on personal glory, while the other was focused on his team and the result at the cost of personal glory. It’s for that reason that I mark Lara down. Certainly not because of his batting which was exceptional.

To settle this argument in terms of the Bradman measure, which is consistency - the highest average, I did an analysis on the top six batsmen in terms of average, who scored more than 10 000, runs in order to determine the pecking order in terms of quality or "greatness". Steve Smith(6 on this list) is not incuded, as he has not made 10 000 runs yet, has not completed his carreer and is a cheat. The six analyzed were Sangakara, Kallis, Sachin, Lara, Dravid and Ponting. All played in excess of 232 innings and had carreers spanning more than 15 years. Rating points, 1 to 6 were awarded. 1 being the best and 6 the worst. The player with the least amount of total points has therefore the best rating in terms of greatness. The categories analyzed were: 1.Average 2.centuries as a percentage of total amount of innings 3.conversion rate 50 to 100 4.50 plus scores as pecentage of total amount of innings. 1. Average: Sanga. 57.40 = 1 Kallis. 55.37 = 2 Sachin. 53.78 = 3 Lara. 52.88 = 4 Dravid. 52.31 = 5 Ponting 51.85 = 6 2. Centuries as percentage of total amount of innings: Sanga 16.30% = 1 Kallis 16.07% = 2 Lara. 14.65% = 3 Ponting 14.28%= 4 Dravid 12.50% = 5 Sachin 9.69% = 6 3. Conversion rate 50 to 100: Kallis 43.68% = 1 Sachin 42.85% = 2 Sanga. 42.20% = 3 Lara. 41.46% = 4 Ponting 39.80%= 5 Dravid. 34.61% = 6 4.50 plus scores as pecentage of total innings: Sanga 38.62% = 1 Kallis. 36.78% = 2 Sachin 36.17% = 3 Ponting 35.88%= 4 Lara. 35.30% = 5 Dravid. 34.61% = 6 Total amount of rating points: 1. Sanga = 6 2. Kallis = 7 3. Sachin. = 14 4. Lara. = 17 5. Ponting. = 19 6. Dravid = 22 Kumar Sangakara is the MAN, with Kallis a close second! Please note the following criteria was not brought into consideration: 1.Not out %tage of total amount of innings: Kallis 14.20% = 1 Dravid 11.18% = 2 Ponting 10.10%= 3 Sachin. 9.69% = 4 Sanga. 7.29% = 5 Lara. 2.58% = 6 2. Man of the match awards as a %tage of total matches played: Kallis 13.85% = 1 Sanga 11.94% = 2 Ponting 9.52%= 3 Lara 9.16% = 4 Sachin. 7.00% = 5 Dravid. 6.70% = 6 3. Man of the series awards: Kallis. 9 times = 1 Sachin 5 times = 2 Sanga 4 times = 3 Ponting4 times= 3 Lara 4 times = 3 Dravid 4 times = 3 The not out stat confirms the value a player puts on his wicket (concentration), and the last 2 stats, the impact the player has had on results. These are attributes confirming the real greats - had these facts been brought in contention, the already favourable scores for Kallis and Sangakara would have been even more lopsided. As TEST BATSMEN, statistically they are the top 2 in the Plus 10 000 run club - include Sanga's keeping, and Kallis' bowling and fielding, and you have 2 of the world's greatest TEST cricketers ever!

Salim Durrani ..etc are and will be the bench marks for judging how they had the Guts and Skill to play against such killer bowlers...instead of hiding against helmets and protection. So I don't valve any greatness accorded to Cricketers who played post the Without Helmet ERA ..You play to watch how batsmen handle Raw express pace on Green Tops.. fast and bouncy without helmet .. that's the yardstick.

His strategy was whatever ailment the feilding side was suffering from they would eventually succumb to it... One fielder had the common flu and died of frustration on the 3rd day, another fielder had a splinter in his toe and died of boredom on the 4th day and India won... TRUE STORY...

The list comprises of players who's entire careers have been in this time frame including those still playing. The list is largely fine to me but Hashim Amla and Alistair Cook should both be in the top 20. I also feel Steve Waugh should be a bit higher. He is the one player on this list who did start his career more than 35 years ago BUT his pre 1988 record was very unremarkable, his breakthrough series was the 1989 Ashes. SW was a teak tough competitor with driven discipline and immense skill. He was the Aussie skipper at the height of their dominance. No argument with Tendulkar at 1 and Lara at 2. Very little to choose between them but if I had to pick someone to bat for my life it would be Sachin. He was a bit more consistent than BCL but on his day Brian was incomparable. I would put Ricky Ponting at 3, Sangakkara at 4 and Jaques Kallis at 5.
