I found this aggressive style of music when i was a teenager, and my parents were going through an ugly divorce, i had so much pent up anger inside and the music was way to vent through it, i was a shy kid, but oldest of 4 i needed to be strong for my siblings, metal gave me mental clarity. Angry sounding music often has some deep lyrical meaning and will only find those who are willing to look for it.

People who have never been in a crazy pit like that dont understand what it is. Everyone in there loves each other. We hug each other after ahows too. if someone in the pit falls they dont get trampled, people around them stop, pick them up, and get back to it. Its a beautiful expression to me. Or it was, thats a young mans game. Young men are aggressive thats just a way to release it together instead of fighting or being aggressive in a destructive way.

My brother is physically bothered by metal music. I can't play anything heavier than Godsmack around him without him wincing or pacing. Even as a musician teaching himself music theory, he can't find anything to appreciate in metal music. So I really appreciate Judsons level-headed response and toleration. Perhaps show him some Meshuggah or Behemoth next!

I get how the aggression would be hard to understand - but I think the thing to keep in mind is intent. People can do aggressive things with and to each other without the intention to actually permanently injure anyone. And for me, metal has always been extremely cathartic. I can feel angry about something else, jam out to a really good metal song, and feel the immensely better afterwards. Or to quote a Ted talk I heard once - “Corpsegrinder screams so I don’t have to.”
@amphibeingmcshpongletron5026 Жыл бұрын
Whenever I've been knocked down, tripped, or kneed/elbowed in the face by someone in the pit, They've always picked me up and apologized. I've even crossed arms and linked hands up with them and started spinning and crashing through the pit with them afterwards. Stuff like that just happens some times in metal shows. It's definitely not the intent, it's the reality of the situation. The music is aggressive and energetic, to an extreme degree. The response from the audience matches that energy, but we preserve our humanity.

Best way to describe the vibe of a metal show is an adult playground to release pent up energy. It should also be noted that a GOOD show/crowd will have etiquette , meaning people will be violent only in the designated pit, pick people up when they fall down, protect people who are smaller, good security that will kick people out who are intentionally hurting people, etc. btw I'm really enjoying your videos. I love the format of playing classical in the beginning as well as Judson's complete intrigue and focus in his face while listening to the new music.

there's plenty of hugging at metal shows. Every death or black metal show i've been to, I wind up in a line of people with our arms around each other's shoulders, holding each other up while we headbang in unison. you get your dumb spiky wrestbands tangled in each other's hair, borrow somebody's hairbrush between sets, probably never even learn each other's names, but you have a deeply primal connection to them in those moments.

Metal has been studied and in many instances it actually helps people process aggressive feelings. It is like an overflow valve that keeps it from building too much. There are different emotions that can be taken from metal, although a lot of it is to process anger and frustration. Some studies say that benefits can be things like: Relieves Anxiety. Metal music is the most misunderstood genre because it is mainly related to chaos and violence. ... Reduces the Risk of Depression. ... It Improves your Interest in Reading. ... Boosts your brain activity. ... It reduces the probability of being violent. Just like most studies you can find contradictory information on either side. But, I have listened to everything from bluegrass, classical, hip hop, old country, old jazz, and heavy metal....... I enjoy most genres with the exception of the poppy radio mainstream stuff....... and I can relate in some way to a good portion of it. However, nothing has made me feel better on garbage days quite like metal does. It allows a release of those feelings. Also, my vote goes for Mathcore!... The Dillinger Escape Plan!! Or even Clown Core (interesting to say the least)

This is my favorite video yet because of how deep Judson got with how he feels the music and the setting can promote aggression. I like the plant and garden experiment being brought up as well but feel like with people the aggression is usually already present and like Richard was saying, the shows and music are the outlet. I personally let go of a lot of shitty days at work by having a 20 minute drive with some really aggressive shit playing! PS Richard is a serial killer and spends his weekends with Garth Brooks!

The most Wall of Death looking Wall of Death that ever Wall of Death-ed is probably the one when Exodus played Strike of the Beast at Wacken 2010. Another video you should maybe show Judson is Anthrax playing Indians in Chile in 2013. That circle pit actually got Joey quiet. edit: Meaning, the live (unfixed) recording with slightly poor sound quality version that is floating around on YT. The official video for it does not fully encapsulate just how wild that crowd went.

I think that not only is the aggression factor an outlet mixed with all the creativity, it's also a space where many people can put words and feelings together. I've noticed most of the 'teddy bear' types in the 'extreme' music scenes tend to be people that have molded themselves into that type of person, stemming from a distaste for their surroundings and negative opinions of aspects of environment. So when that's the way life experience has impacted you on a deeper level, having these moments entwined in music that really tap into what you haven't been able to express on a mass audience, it's a feeling of empowerment or recognition, that we can respond to rather than saying it and no one hearing it. As for the physical nature of these live shows, I don't have anything to back up what I think, but I currently feel that it is just the nature of evolving culture. As both audience and performer in my past, when people are being reckless, it's a sign that they are really feeling what you're doing. You're making an impact with what you say as a musician, and you're making an impact with how you respond as an audience.

Perhaps I would have rather explained the phenomenon in this way: The roots of this music go back to a period before civilization reaching the ancient tribal period. What we see is essentially a tribal war dance, a symbolic clash in which there is no intentional punching or kicking, if someone falls to the ground they are helped up. This is a very important part to mosh, where this doesn't happen, it's a shame (personally, I've been to a lot of metal concerts, but I've never seen that somebody hasn't been helped up ever)...

That plant experiment has always fascinated me... I've been trying my hand at gardening recently, and with the experiment in mind I've made a point of listening to more uplifting music more often (house and trance for the most part), but I've also subjected my plant to more aggressive music (metal and industrial, possibly some punk) and it's thrived all the same. I'm wondering if it's got anything to do with the energy taken into the situation, like, if you play something gnarly to a plant hoping to prove it's unhealthy or whatnot, then it's gonna carry that negative vibe with it 🤔

His not “sending that aggression”. As most hardcore styles vocalist is a conduit, not a source. He let audience to vent their bad energy through him like a preacher. It sounds cult-uesq, but it is a good thing. After such show I felt lighter, easier, happier. I just dump all that get it’s teeth in my for a time and I just send it out with hundreds of people around my, gathered for the same thing. From my childhood and difficult adolescence metal guided me - kept me calm, let me vent all the bad things with it.
