Hey Coach Greg, here’s my story just want to put it out there. I ran cross country for 6 years, I was genetically gifted in that area but I quit when I went to college with my high school PR being a 16:42 for a 5k which was respectable considering I didn’t train as hard as my peers. I went to college and did 2 years of no training whatsoever. At 20 a friend invited me to weightlift with him. I had never touched a barbell in my life, they weren’t necessary for XC. In my first year of training, (considering my buddy was a navy vet who had been lifting for decades) I went from 150 to 205 naturally, although I ate like a horse and trained like a mule. I’ve seen a huge slowdown though in my gains which I expected. I don’t think it’s impossible to put that much muscle on because I did, but I also trained like a maniac and built myself off a solid platform

I thought that there was something wrong with me when I started to lift four years ago, because of all the bad information out there! I have terrible genetics, I was formally a distance runner. Still I stuck with it knowing that it was going to take time and I was able to put on some size, in spite of my poor genetics. I just worry about a younger person hearing that you can put on 20 pounds of muscle in the first year, and after that does not happen, giving up! I was 50 when I started so knew to give it some time. Great content as always Greg!

I’m 55 lbs up in under 3 years of lifting and have a 6 pack. Genetics plays a massive role and height does too... I’m 6’5 so of course I’m going to add 2x the amount of muscle a 5’5 dude might. I’ve been able to eat whatever I want for one meal a day. 45 lbs of it is muscle and I know that for a fact because I was 195 with veins coming out of my pecs/abs/quads a couple months ago when my diet was actually dialed in, lol. When I’m actually dialed in I workout every day, do light cardio multiple times per week and eat healthy 6 out of 7 days per week. Plus I never drink alcohol which kills gains and raises estrogen levels. My first 6 months I put on a legit 20 lbs of muscle and also burned all my fat off (it was the first time I had ever worked out for muscle building purposes), have pictures I can show you to prove it. Those 6 months for me I had tunnel vision, I find it hard to believe anyone out there worked harder than me in those 6 months through nutrition, sleep, calisthenics, cardio and mental training. That’s why I had results that people couldn’t believe. Also why many people thought I was on steroids when I posted my 6 month/1 year transformation pictures lol

I watch a lot of your vids so I'm pretty familiar with the concepts you preach. This definitely flies in the face of every mainstream article I've read on the internet. Most of these sources advertise 1-2lbs of muscle per month for a man starting out and 0.5lbs for a woman. This was definitely an eye opener. Makes you realize how much fat you're probably putting on thinking it's muscle.

@liamsmith16374 жыл бұрын
Those are really good actually. The body fat isn’t like super lean but considering your bodyweight growth it still makes sense. I think though when you get older your muscles will mature and sarcopenia will kick in. I recommend you don’t stop working out consistently throughout your life. You will enjoy having nice toning in your mid thirties and though you may shrink a bit after, I’m certain you will get leaner thanks to collagen levels dropping but not as bad as old dudes your age when you reach that point thanks to how well you take care of yourself. Hell your muscles might start splitting too after enough time, gonna get more heads in your shoulders or something like that

Hes right, I started lifting at about 14, gained about 12 lbs. Got up to about 155 at 15. I'm 6tf btw. The second year was about 6 lbs I went up to about 160-163ish at 16. At 17 I gained another 6ish, puberty probably helps (165-170) by this time I consistantly put on about 2-3 lbs a year. Ay 18 I was 170-175. During my teenage years I was about consistent at 10-12% bf. I'm 24 now and I'm about 185 when at 12% I'm at the point where at about a decade of training, I'm going to put on maybe a half pound to a pound a year from here on out. I'm striving for about 190 at less than 8% one day This is coming from someone with top tier genetics. I'll probably never be over 200 lbs low body fat.

Ema are you training your upper body? If NOT it is lige 1/4 of a man.
@Ema-fm5zy5 жыл бұрын
@@Ayumaz Do you think I gained 1.5-2kg of muscle just on my lower half?... If that was the case do you think I wouldcomplain about seeing a big difference? You can't even do heavy compound movements like squats and deadlifts unless you train your upper body too and the heavy exercises will give you most of the gains. Even to set up hip thrusts you need upper body strength after a while.
@Ema-fm5zy5 жыл бұрын
@@Ayumaz Maybe at the start I didn't train properly all muscle groups as I didn't have a good program in the first months and I was quite busy and didn't live close to the gym. I didn't do enough volume for all groups all the time, but I still trained my whole body overall. So I could have probably gained a few hundred grams more if I did everything right from the first months. But by no means I could gain like those instagram models. Those women gained inches of muscle... And if you calculate how many pounds that means, I basically gained about as much as Greg said a woman should gain. And if I would have trained better and gained a few hundred grams more that would still be the range he suggested.

I've been following your vids and Sean nallajani for the length of my journey. And I feel good about how I look. Gaining lean mass has been a pain in the ass for me since I started out super lean bean pole.

Great to hear someone who's willing to tell the truth about realistic muscle gains. I find most fitness guru's(whether they are knowlegable or not) tend to shy away from telling people what they can realistically expect about how long it takes to grow naturally. For good reason cause many would be demotivated and quit before even starting which means less viewership/money for the trainers. Then the delusional roid deniers get in on it and try to tell you what kinda gains they made, all natural and all muscle not fat of course, and its near impossible to get legit information in this regard.

But greg, that says pounds, not "pounds of muscle" I gained 20kilos (~44 lb) in 1.5 years of training of course that is not muscle, since I also went from 9-11%bf to 14-15%bf. Most beginners (me for example) would rather hear 30 pounds of body mass, than 12 pounds of muscles, that motivated me to train, and even knowing that now that I had false expectations, I'm looking way better and I am much happier than I was las year

This is the truth. My first serious bulk was about a year long and I sincerely tried to do everything right as best as I could (intense workouts, calorie surplus, protein intake, good sleep). I went from 58kg all the way to 72kg BUT most of it ended up being fat. When I leaned down again I only ended up being around 62kg (~9 lb lean gains total). My second bulk, I went all the way to 72kg again (took me ~1 year again but did a slower, leaner bulk this time and didn't end up as fat at 72 as I did the first time), and am again leaning down now (69kg atm), this time I think I'll be around 65kg in the end (~6.6 lb lean gain total). I get so confused every time I hear people say they gain 20 lb in their first year, I used to think I had piss poor genetics! But this video completely falls in line with my experience.

When I joined the US Army I was 20 yrs old, 5'7",150lbs, smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, and had just gotten over a 2 yr crack addiction. I went to OSUT at Ft. Benning that way; through basic I dropped 15lbs and was a very lean 135lbs. Over the next 2 months through 11b mos school I put 35lbs of muscle on my frame still had a 29" waist. Standing in class B's I weighed 174 lbs. I could do 100 pushups, could climb 2 ropes till in a complete iron cross position easily, 20 wide grip pullups was just a warm-up, and could run a mile in 4:45. I know I have great genetics even if a little on the shorter side but I worked my ass off to only score a 295 on my final pt test. I was a few situps short of getting and extending the scale above 300 as I'd done 78 pushups and 71 situps each in there two min slot; then ran the two mile in 12:20. I'll never forgive myself lol

I'm a newbie, but wanted to just post this here. Under the supervision of an IFBB Pro. He had me in the gym for 5 months with zero carbs, zero sugar, only chicken, sprouts, and kraut 6x a day. Then we did a body scan. 17% body fat. He put me on carbs, same diet now with rice every meal. In 28 days I put on 13.6lbs of "lean mass" and dropped down to 12% body fat. Both the inBody and Fit3D scanners said the same thing. I believe diet is 80% of it, 10% the gym, and 10% sleep. Dude has dialed me in and I am gaining strength and size. As a natty, I will never get as big as half the dudes in the gym, but good god I am feeling so much better than I did when I was 204 and fat. Now I am 205 and at 12% body fat. I have the scans to show for it.
