UPDATE: Golden triangle sizes and fonts both vary on authentic AMD chips: twitter.com/gregsalazaryt/status/1592635966044639232?s=46&t=TVyeHxdN5wQyknjxbvwShw Sleuths in the AMD subreddit have apparently confirmed the 3950X to be fake. I’m having AMD take a closer look at it for verification. This would be the first time I’ve run into a counterfeit Ryzen chip. Keep an eye out. Will link the post below to help others out with the tell-tale signs of a fake: www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/yufrbp/looks_like_fake_ryzen_chips_are_still_in/

indeed. couple years ago during the start of the crazy gpu shortage i bought a msi prebuilt for my son for Christmas. i went through the whole thing before Christmas to make sure it would be good to go.. right after posting it would blue screen.. tried multiple things. turned out to be a corrupted windows install. after a fresh usb install it was fixed and ready to go.. it would have been super disappointing for him Christmas morning if i didn't check it.

Hi, do you think you'd be willing to make a long form video going through basic troubleshooting ideas you use for fix or flop. I know you cover it in the videos, but having one video with all troubleshooting moves would be majorly helpful. I had to troubleshoot a rig for a friend who is completely in the dark regarding PC stuff. I had to jump between 3 or 4 videos since I myself am not perfect and can't remember everything off the top of my head. But some basic things to be covered would be greatly helpful to many people.

Once the both of you learn the basics, then you carry that along with everything in life. You troubleshoot most electronics in the same way. From computers to dryers/washers /cars/ air conditioners etc. So once you learn the order of operations for said unit, you will be using that across the board. Get a good work mat and a good set of tools and a voltage meter to start with. Then you can start adding items like a psu tester, spare mobo and cpu and gpu. Best of luck fellas

Physically its easy... simply narrow down the sources of error bit by bit. -Clear cmos -Check connections. -Plug out all conections from the frontpanel, sata, keyboard, etc... -Then gpu, if you have a intern grafic cpu plug the monitir on the mainboard otherwise replace gpu -take out all ram and try one stick in one chanel for every chanel and stick -check psu -change and CLEAN(pins) components thats are sus In basic you only need cpu, mainboard and one stick of ram, from there it should be easy to find the error. And sometimes it helps by simply rebuild it back...

Really liked how that build looked. I have one in an O11d with similar parts (Exact AIO and fans) myself, his cable management is great. And special shoutout for the flipped AIO rad so the tube goes on the left to not block the rgb fans (I've seen it in so many O11D builds with the tube going to the right over RGB fans which is fine but i prefer it not going over the fans for aesthetic reasons.) Always loved your troubleshooting methods greg. this also teaches us not to short cut it and assume which part is broken before doing a full troubleshoot and end up replacing the wrong part :)

In the UK, Amazon will deal with a warranty issue within the first 12 months of purchaing an item. I had a USB CCTV camera that failed 11 months after I purchased it and, after contacting Amazon, they organised a return and issued a full refund. Our legislation is such that the warranty responsiblity lies with the vendor, not the manufacturer.

Hopefully he can get that cpu replaced. Even though the 5500 is technically zen 3 still it is a 5600g with disabled GPU and half the cache of the 5600 and lower clock speed that the 5600 as well. It’ll certainly work for a kids gaming pc but what a difference between performance. Maybe the owner can get it returned and grab the X3D chip instead and just max out the gaming performance of the platform.

I had a rookie mistake yesterday. Something so simple some one that knows what they are doing shouldn't make, yet I did. Or does that just mean I don't know what I am doing? I was installing a new GPU in my machine and I accidentally unplugged the front panel and when I went to plug it back in, I went on autopilot and plugged the connectors into a USB point on the board. Needless to say, when I clicked the power button nothing happened. It took me all of 10 mins to realize what I did. 10 minutes of sheer panic. I guess I am lucky I didn't kill the usb on the mobo.

I use a R9 3900x since March 2020 now, it went trough several boards and cases, never had any issue with it (except the stuttering caused by fTPM that hast been fixed by AMD ). Strange that you had that many issues with Zen 2. A friend also had issues with a R7 3800x, but after bathing that in Isopropanol and Aceton while brushing the pins it rans just fine again (crashed early in Windows installation). So I suspect the owner of bricking the CPU (or he bought it already bricked). I doubt that he bought the CPU new recently, does not make any sense to me buying a old chip for a new platform. Rather would buy a 5900x instead, less cores but approx the same speed I guess. Nebertheless, I presume the chip has been bought used or has been reused from an older rig of the owner and he shredded it in the process.

What I noticed the most here is that the mounting brackets he is using for the 3950X, it looks like he is using the wrong brackets because I have yet to see a AM4 mounting bracket from corsair with 4 Points of screw down. It looks like the TR4 brackets that are currently on there. Usually for AM4 they use the typical Clip mounts with the original brackets on the motherboard. Could it have died from overheating? Its clearly working again but for how long with the new cpu? Just a thing I noticed, I looked up corsairs newer h170i cappelix and even that one still has the clip mounts for AM4, and then theres the brackets like the ones here in the video for TR4.

Hey Greg, My MSI x570 Gaming Edge Wifi just had a similar issue due to bios (Confirmed by MSI) this could be an issue with bios if it was flashed recently. mine was totally bricked and I had to replace it with a TUF x570 (only thing I could find) this is apparently an issue with MSI bioses (my board was less than 6 mos old.) (Added note: this was a 5950x that was originally though went bad but turned out to be bios, system was flat (no lights, power anything.)

i use to be a BIG corsair buyer n user (i have fans, 4 DIMMS vengeance rgb pro, keyboard, n mouse) but when i had a problem with their icue software just dropping the connection with all the parts i asked on the Forums on their site n was told by one of their techs that if i dont know what im doing i shouldn't be buying these things. I'm not not 100% tech savvy, but fans, keyboard, ram, mouse are not that hard. i had them installed a YEAR ago n everything worked great. then one day a few weeks ago it all just stopped, i didn't mess with the software (aside from updating it) i didn't mess with the gear it just stopped. n i was basically told "tough one figure it out yourself". i sorta got it figured out, i uninstalled icue n reinstalled it, it's still it buggy tho. im prob just gonna drop icue all together n just just different software.

You sure have seen ur share of AMD CPUs fail. As far as the 5500 goes, if the son is only using it for gaming I'm not so sure that the 5500 would be the better choice vs the 3950x. You should grab a few 5800Xs while their cheap. And maybe a few 5600Xs.

Is it just me or does the chip look fake? First, it's strange to see a brand new Zen 2 chip that was manufactured in early 2019 being sold in late 2022, plus the writing on the chip and the UG look fake. Could it be an old AM4 Athlon from 2016?
@GregSalazar

Even older Intel chips have different manufacturing locations despite being identical SKUs. All depends on the date and agreements in place.
@tamasayo

@Greg Salazar After a quick search this is definitely an old AM4 Athlon, the best way to tell is to look at the golden triangle/arrow in the bottom left corner, which is larger on these older athlons than on the ryzen chips. This would explain why nothing happened, as these chips are no longer supported on modern AM4 chipsets/bios.
@tamasayo
@tamasayo Жыл бұрын
@@GregSalazar Some more signs that it's a fake one : - Old flat IHS with no hole and chamfered edges (old design from FX cpus and first 2016 AM4 Athlons.) - "UG" not stamped in metal like on a real 3950X.

I would have never thought it was the motherboard either, in this case, but it is so much simpler to just toss in a CPU just to find out instead of swapping the motherboard out, I would have done it really quick just to make sure. Plus.... I've been through the return process with AMD Miami and I believe the owner would have a better chance than you. They want the receipt for the CPU, a picture of the CPU sitting in the motherboard, a picture of your DNA string from 23 and ME ( just kidding), and more paperwork. But it's a pretty involved process to keep all the burnt up CPU's from hobbyist's from overwhelming them.

Fix or flop has taught me so much. I'm not a pc builder by any means and it seemed very intimidating. I even had best buy assemble mine a year ago. But as I watched the fix or flop series, I learned about the plethora of mistakes they made. Things like not using dual channel RAM slots, installing my fans backwards... small things like that. Watching Greg disassemble and reassemble and test and retest over the past few episodes made me feel pretty confident about fixing all those issues I had myself and even upgrading a bunch of parts. Thanks for making it accessible. Love the content, keep it up!

Quality Control in Production of many products has gone downhill these past 3 years due to short staffing and high employee turn over. I'm not surprised by this issue. When the whole world's economy was shut down in 2020, I knew then it would take at least 5 to 10 years to get it back to where it was before the shut down.
