Thank you for being the first person to both make a video about the m3 pro chip, as well as discuss in detail the differences between the *two* versions of it, providing all the relevant benchmarks I wanted to see for both. The only factors left in making my decision now is battery life, and between 14" and 16".

I'm hesitating between the M3chip and the M3Pro chip. I think the M3 chip would fit my needs but I really like the Space Black color and it fits my budget. However, I noticed some white lines linked to the use of the thunderbolts... Also, it has a 18hrs battery life, against a 22hrs one for the M3chip. What would you advise me to do? Thank you !!

@@ymckrgb I assumed that's the reason. What I don't really get is why they waited so long to switch to ARM. They must surely have had some idea how much better the chips would perform compared to Intel's range of bloated spluttering fire-hazard processors from what they've been doing with iPhones.

Thanks for reviewing the M3 Pro as it was the one I was most interested in in terms of performance compared to the previous one. I thought MaxTech was going to cover these specs combos but everyone seems to be reviewing the M3 Max only which is way too expensive for me - thanks again! :)

Exactly my situations. I think most people are looking for a powerful future proved MacBook but not the Max Version which is way to expensive especially here in Germany (the base 14” M3 Max starts at 3.999 € 💀) Im looking for an upgrade from my 2019 intel 16 inch base model to m2 pro or m3 pro. Somehow it seems like a not so easy decision for me. Because I don’t want the base model this time. I want 32/36 gb of ram and 1tb ssd (for occasional 4K 10 Bit editing, lots of photo editing, and graphic design, often used parallel) In this category I’m already around 3k euros🥲

Initially ordered the M3 version and upgraded the RAM to 16GB until I realized from your initial video that it was only $200 to get all the benefits of M3 Pro, more than double the RAM of the base model, better processor, extra thunderbolt port, space black color, ability to drive 2 external displays, better thermals. Thank you, I haven't seen many cover this base level M3 Pro MBP. Originally I was going to buy a M3 MBP, but after adding more ram, being so close to the M3 Pro MBP ($200), seemed like a no brainer for all you gain. However, not seeing any early benchmarks, I was worried how a binned chip would do. This model still seems like the sweet spot in my opinion. If that M3 MBP came with 16 gigs of ram stock, would be a harder sell.

I'll use this machine as everyday computer, along with photo editing, video editing (not professional), and high quality streaming/media consumption. Also want to game a bit on it as well with games available on Mac with PS5 controller and some Apple Arcade games. I'm the same as you - I plan to have this computer for 6-8 years. I need more than 8GB of ram, not sure I need a pro-pro MacBook, but I’d put up the extra $200 for sure. The loss of on battery time? I’m usually plugged in. Extra fan? I’m not a fan of fans, coming from a M1 MBA. The extra port? I current don’t have any peripheral plugged in while using and if/when I do, I think 2 would be enough. I’d use the HDMI for an external monitor, no need for 2 external monitors. Not interested in black, although I haven’t seen it in person yet. My MBA is space gray and I’d rather have silver. So yeah, there I am buying a pro pro because I’m saying, for $200 more why not. Good job Apple. lol. My head tells me to wit to see what the M3 MBA presents…but, I hate waiting.

I don't think it's negative at all to see this as what it is. A decision by marketing to reposition the M3 Pro chip by effectively degrading its capability and making the jump to a much more powerful and expensive Max chip more appealing to a larger number of customers in the M3 generation. I say it's not negative, because that's clearly what they have done. It's another example of Apple selling up its customers. Just the same as they have done with the base 14" Pro, where if you even think of upgrading anything on it, you might as well move up to the Pro chip. Apple have mastered the art of the up sell. Its the most innovative thing they do these days unfortunately and it overshadows some amazing hardware.

Apple has all the data and over time interprets it and understands what they have to do to make a sustainable business model. When they launched Apple Silicon, they fired at 100% and that has caused massive issues in future sales, basically the M1 was too good. They are now realigning their lineup and getting some sort of pricing to performance ratio. So this is the year where they make the Max the de facto performance variant and the M3 Pro is kept similar to the M2 Pro to widen the gap. Very sensible and easy to understand and for the vast majority not important as 95%+ upgrading to the M3 Pro will be coming from an Intel or M1, so the performance versus the M2 Pro is moot.

This is the comparison I was hoping to see. Usually the base Pro chips gives you the GPU performance of last gen's top GPU. i.e. Base M1 pro matching the 5600m, Base M2 Pro match the Top M1 Pro etc. This year your only getting the same performance as the Last gen's Base 16 core GPU. 12-core vs. 11-core may not seem like an increase 'that's worth it', but it depends. It has 6 performance cores rather than 5, so for that aspect, it has the potential for 20% increase just based on the sheer number of performance cores alone, not counting the GPU increase of 14 to 18, which is a 29% increase in that aspect alone, and not counting the two additional GB of storage. For music production, it really is all about performance cores, and how many there are. Logic Pro, Ableton, and other DAWs do not use efficiency cores or GPU cores at all, so all that mesh/dynamic caching/ray tracing falderal just does not enter in to the equation if you are looking for more performance for music production. That's all just eyewash. A one-size-fits all Geekbench test doesn't really translate to what matters for music production. Bottom line, part of a buying decision for music producers will hinge on the sheer number of performance cores. You can trick out a MBP to $7200, but it will still have only 6 performance cores. So it seems the best thing to do is to consider either the 14" 12-core (6 P-core, $2400 with 1TB) or the base 16" (also 6 P-core, $2700 with 1TB) and either one will have 18 GB of unified memory already. The Max is overkill for music production, and it has only the same 6 P-cores as the M3 Pro. Actually, the original 8-GB M1 can handle well over 90% or better of what music producers need without even breathing hard, and it had only 4 performance cores, meaning the 11-core (5 P-core) base 14" M3 is also a good budget choice. Comparing M2 to M3 is not really helpful, unless you are considering an M2 refurb or a bargain bin sale of the still existing models on the shelf. The choices are all M3 when it comes to what you can buy, which is really the only reason a comparison matters other than regarding how different the present is to the past, which is irrelevant to whatever model you end up with. Only the present enters in to a buying decision.

@@miabchdave Sorry, since those tests really are 'off the chain' I've narrowed my concentration to models that could both make a difference and matter, without me having to refinance my condo. IOW, M3 Max, Ultra, and beyond is not an option. It won't buy me anything I might need for music production, bc all the bells and whistles are things not used by Logic, and the M3 Pro already covers it. I don't need a Ferrari to get to work on time. And those models that make sense for Logic are two-the 12-core 14" M3 Pro MBP and the 16" M3 Pro MBP.

@@greccoox Well, I am living proof that the original M1 with 8 GB will work just fine for less than 100 tracks. it hasn't failed me yet. Yes, it is under memory pressure, but it never even breathes hard. The fan hardly kicks on. I might see a delay when playback is invoked directly after loading a project, but once loaded it stays in RAM and does not delay again. I do have buyer's remorse for not getting 16 GB in 2020, but not really bc of Logic. It has been commonly said that 8 GB of Apple unified memory is equivalent to 16 GB of RAM in a PC, but maybe that's just hyperbole.

Love your videos and where you focus on a large degree of considerations, particularly whether a typical user would most benefit. I started with computers 45 years ago with 16K RAM and punched cards, and was demo’d a prototype Mac in 1983, so I bring a different experience to the picture. I think that a substantial majority of Mac users, however, don’t do video editing beyond the basics of maybe birthday or vacation videos “if they are ambitious”. I know that the multitude of KZbinrs doing Apple commentary and evaluations do, but I really wonder if the focus on the graphics cores is as important to most people. My main home box is an 11 year old Linux desktop, due for retirement as it runs 24/7 through that time. My gaming is either on my iPad (or previously Android tablets, which died too easily) or turn based on Linux, while I have had Apple TV boxes for my video viewing needs - I’m looking at a MacBook Air and an iMac, at least 16 GB for each, and it doesn’t sound like the fact that computing power isn’t increased so much as you move up the chip tree unless you go M3 Max and eventually Ultra doesn’t justify shooting higher at this point. Thanks for actually speaking to that.

Nice early review for the Pro. No G6 compute? The main differentiator for M3 is ray tracing and though I think this is over-emphasised in computer reviews (as few actually use it) - it would be nice to see 3DMark Solar Bay results for this.

I’ve been shopping for a replacement for my trusty late 2013 i7 Intel MBP with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I didn’t want to downgrade on RAM and SSD so I’ve been looking at M2 Pro and M3 Pro 14 in with 16/18GB and 1TB SSD. I agree that the M3 Pro with 18GPU core may not be worth the $200. Basically B&H Holiday Sale made the decision easier for me by taking $300 off the 14 in M3 Pro with 18 core GPU 1TB SSD 18GB RAM. So at $2099 it’s cheaper than the base M3Pro with similar configuration. More memory would have been better to future proof the machine but since it wasn’t on sale, I would have had to fork out $700 more for just 18GB more memory which is just outrageous pricing…that’s getting very close to the M3 Max prices and definitely more than I wanted to spend. Overall, I’m happy to get this machine for $2099 and can only hope that it will serve me nearly as long as that trusty late 2013 MBP. 🤞

Thank you so much Greg for this clear explanation, as I was so confused between the options before I saw this video. Will be excited to see what the resulta are in your previous comments about the M3 pro and M3 Max performance to efficiency allocations and whether it will affect battery life between the 2 chip options and also the difference in the 14" and 16" chassis cooling / battery usage.

performance: benchmark scores are not enough. Show actual performance when running a music, photo, especially video editing software! I already saw a video today from a video editor who had an m1 max computer 2021 and then bought the 2023 m3pro chip, using a video editing software, and saw WORSE performance. He couldn't figure it out, but one commenter said that possibly he was not running the "right" software. These are real world issues. What would be a great solution to this is to create a video in which for each level of computer, m1, m2, m3, m2 pro, m3 pro, m3 max, etc. the chip is in a column next to the general type of work done. 2. not only the chip but the ram, cpu, gpu (or unified ram) should be shown.

I seriously think Apple have missed a trick of categorising the lineup. I would drop the word “Pro” somewhat and have this lineup… -Mackbook M3 -Mackbook M3 Pro -Mackbook M3 Max That would make it much much easier for people to choose.

I get stuck on the fact that M2 Pro's 16gb ram is 200gb/s and M3 Pro's 18gb ram is 150gb/s. Which is actually better in terms of ram?? Less information can travel at once with M3, .. but it can.. store more information to be used at any given time compared to M2.. am I understanding this correctly?

QUESTION! I’m considering selling my trusty M1 Macbook Air with 16gb ram and getting 14” M3 Pro (either binned or unbinned). What do you think? Would that be a significant upgrade?

The MaxTech video comparing 8gb M3 to 16gb M3 was insane. Even for non pro users.. you just gotta upgrade the ram to unlock the M3 chip and have a better overall experience, plus less swap. Adding Ram made the M3 perform SO much better. My question would be how does the 24gb M3 fair against the 18gb M3 binned Pro.

I think Apple did their tests and worked out the extra bandwidth was not being used in the M2 and M2 Pro, so was overkill. They have downsized them to fit what they really need rather than pleasing spec-chasers.

Who the hell is upgrading from a base M2 Pro to a base M3 Pro? If you can afford to spend $2000+ per year, get a freaking Ultra and keep it for 2 or 3 years. Not sure why anyone cares that the base M3 Pro has the same GPU performance as the base M2 Pro… it’s not a GPU focused chip anyways, and it got some decent bumps in single and multi core CPU performance over the M2 Pro. I personally think the base M3 Pro is the best middle ground chip to go for, unless you specifically do GPU work, in which case you should probably go Max instead of Pro anyways.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 10 ай бұрын
You are of course 100% spot on. No one should worry about the difference to an M2 Pro as that was released only 9 months ago and no one will be upgrading from that to the M3 Pro! Apple knows this and therefore used the M3 Pro to increase the performance gap between Pro and Max models.

I just got my M3 Macbook pro from Apple refurbished and I had a tough time deciding on whether I should get the M3 pro chip or not. They were the same price, here are the specs 14” macbook pro m3 8/10 cpu/gpu 24gb memory 1tb SSD Vs 14” macbook pro m3 pro 11/14 cpu/gpu 18gb memory 1tb SSD As you know, refurbished website is limited and had to make a quick decision. I’ll be using it for some video editing (nothing crazy) and some school work, MAYBE the occasional game or two. So I decided to just go with the M3 and decided more memory was better than more cores. I’d love to know ur thoughts on this!!! (Or anyone who sees this) 😊

Please state full and exact specs at the start of these videos. Otherwise they are pointless. Which CPU and GPU variant exactly, how much RAM, and how much storage. Also there is something wrong with your charts - Cinebench 2024 multicore, that doesn't look like a 13% improvement. The M3 Pro bar looks about 20-25% longer. So something funky there with your charts.

basically the difference with what you bought and the M3 Pro is that M3 Pro CPU is 13% faster than M2 Pro but the GPU is just the same with the M2 Pro. So just a little boost in performance, personally I think it's not worth the extra $240.

Thank you for also explaining the 2 m3 pro chips. I was debating on getting the more powerful one vs the lower end one, but I want the GPU power so I think I'll upgrade it. Sucks that they lowered the amount of GPU in the lower and higher models from the M2 versions. Apple definitely goes crazy with inflating their prices. I really didn't want to upgrade yet, but my old imac is no longer supported.
