Excellent tutorial Greg well done indeed. With regards to the sockets when on ehu, I assume that the inverter output sockets have the same limitations as when running from battery power and the 2G socket in your diagram has regular mains limitations together with its own fuses/ distribution for 230.

Your manner, delivery and time served knowledge across a wide range of areas is pleasurable to listen to. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. One question please; the interweb gives everyone a voice. There are so many (and I was once one of those people) that don't really understand AGM battery management. Yes we can search for info, however if you did a vid on this and used 'lay man's' terms, it would provide muchly needed, clear detail that isn't out there in abundance. Cheers!

Ok, that's a great idea, I can include some of our energy-saving ideas too. The battery capacity is directly related to the resting battery voltage. So keeping a close eye on what the battery voltage is lets you know how much power you have left to use.

Great video. Well explained. I've installed that exact controller and it's worth noting that when solar and alternator are connected unless the solar is switched off the alternator can only put in 15 amps, not the full 30. You could switch the solar off manually before travelling or I fitted an ignition switched relay which turns the solar off automatically when the engine ignition is turned on. Otherwise it works very well.
@GregVirgoe Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. I will do some clamp meter readings to verify that when I get it up and running. That won’t be an issue if you’re driving during the day as it should be made up with solar and at night the solar should be off. Not sure that would have much of an affect. Have you taken any working readings yourself?? 😊
@johnburnside9668 Жыл бұрын
I have the renogy meter and it does show the difference. I'm sure it was in the manual somewhere. I only have a 100w panel and don't often see more than 5 amps coming in, if I'm driving with the solar on in daylight ,I'm only getting a max of 20 amps in(5+15) instead of the full 30 with solar off.

Is there an advantage to running a negative cable all the way back to the starter battery rather than attaching to the chassis /bodywork nearer the leisure battery or dc-dc unit? Great video. Keeps it simple. This is the kind of set-up that I'm looking for. I noticed you have two leisure batteries. @justinbolt1356 Жыл бұрын
As a caveat, to be code compliant just about anywhere, you would need to include a RCD "TYPE A" and MCB on the output of the inverter with the simple solution here to be to wire the hookup between the inverter and the board. In all honesty though this inverter does not seem to have ECE R10 Certification for Automotive use, so could not be legalised in many countries as part of a van conversion project and registration, it would certainly be reason for a MOT fail where I am!
@andym1908 Жыл бұрын
@justinbolt1356 it wouldn't even come under MOT regulations in the UK .An inverter is not part of a. UK MOT .
@GregVirgoe Жыл бұрын
@@justinbolt1356 I wrote to Renogy and they confirmed that the inverter has residual current detection on the ac output so that combined with a fused plug means the outlet is protected and no further devices are needed off the outlet. Here in the uk the internal campervan components do not fall into a vehicle MOT and it is up to the individual to get them check and certified by qualified electrician but that it not a legal requirement either. 😊

Absolutely brilliant m8... You inspired me some yrs back and I converted an old I've come 35-12 and lived in it in Spain 2019-2020 then covid kicked in and not ran out and being no longer part of Europe I could not get away with driving through Spain on a precooked mot inspection in UK and couldn't afford to get it back any other way so it got scrapped BUT I'm doin it again but better this time and this video is the biggest thing I need help with and the simplistic pictoral layout I can achieve... 😁thnx

Excellent video to the high standard we‘ve come to expect. Great that you are planning a follow up video dealing with earths, grounds etc. I can‘t be the only one who finds that area confusing.

This is an excellent tutorial for basic wiring. A beautiful execution of the K.I.S.S. principle.

Without a doubt, the most sensible video on camper wiring anywhere online. Thanks Greg.
@johnfromireland5 ай бұрын
@@Dickie2702 sensible? Gel batteries, lithium not considered or explained why not. Apart from the fact they're already owned. But that'll not be true for most new builders.
@Dickie27025 ай бұрын
@@johnfromirelandI was commenting on the clarity of the wiring diagram and easily understood explanation of the components. Apart from the limitations of solar input it's a decent and cost effective package, agreed? Lithium is an option and has advantages but it's an uptick in price and this is a budget build.

Brilliant. I wish i had seen this 4 years ago when I did my conversion. However I now have a blue print showing me how i can improve my own installation. Thank you, Greg.

Thank you Greg. Will definitely be using your layout. Better than a Haynes manual. Just one question, have you remade this video but showing how a consumer unit is connected? That would be really helpful

Greg, you are an absolute legend. This has shown me everything I need to know. I wish the so called "professional" I paid many thousands had done the same job as this instead of a totally rubbish wiring setup. I did not think I was capable of doing something like this- hence choosing an utter muppet to do the work. I now feel confident enough to do this myself. Thank you Sir. Many thanks and much respect- Kenny

Great stuff Greg. I watched your original Sprinter series and you gave me the confidence to have a go. , not only the aspects you covered but other items . My list covers Truma and gas cooker install, Underslung LPG tank, cut the windows and vents out, fit fans , windows and vents , loo and shower, revolving seats , Her in doors showed me how a sewing machine worked so Curtains , and upholstery followed ( even matched the patterns on the cushions ) and finally a pair of bunk beds that hang off the swivel seats. Some of these you didn't cover but I followed your simple approach which helped me gain confidence to tackle anything .I always tell people to watch your vids and I have watched some many times using them for reference. You are like the best teacher I never had. Hope this doesn't make your head too big !!!!!!!! Keep up the good work

Good stuff Greg. I would always use a 30 mA RCD for any 230 volt, AC circuits; and also ensure there is a means of providing a neutral to earth bond upstream of the source. Otherwise the RCD will not trip by itself under fault conditions, as it should with a grid connection ...
