Yes, in 84 (or 83 when they wrote this)... Cable was braggable. Video rental stores hadnt become fully mainsteam yet, and even though Cable tv had technically existed since the 1960s (when it was called Pay tv), it had only just started becoming mainstream by the early 80s. 1984 was when my dad finally got it, and he didnt make a lot of money so it was a big deal, and the idea of havng unedited movies (from premium channels like HBO) on your tv was exciting. MTV was also becoming a huge cultural event by 84... and some people would get cable just for that.

Back in the 70's around the time I was born my dad was in the air force posted to a base out in Rural Oklahoma and my parents paid $8/month for cable tv that consisted of the broadcast networks because the broadcast signals wouldn't reach that far.

@@tancar2004 Yeah I've heard that some people got cable for that purpose... in the area that couldnt get reception. in the 70s there were also competing cable tv technologies... one weird one was only available in Ohio, called Qube.. it had an interactive controller where you could interact (like, voting on things) with the shows you warched. Qube had a kids channel called Pinwheel, which was spun of into it's own national cable network, Nickelodeon.

Gremlins came out when I was 6. It was definitely scary but I also loved it. All the other kids talked about the kitchen scene but I don’t think a single kid disliked it.

I saw Gremlins when I was a kid and I loved it. Back then, my mom had gotten me a kitten and we named it Gizmo because the color and color pattern of it's fur looked a lot like Gizmo from Gremlins.

I was 4-5 when this movie came out, and was in heavy circulation. Gizmo obviously is super cute, while the gremlins are creepy as shit, but really cool looking. The part that freaked out my little kid mind was that they were my size, loved the dark, loved hiding in and under stuff to grab you or pop out at you, and not shy about using teeth and claws. Every creak of the house settling, every rustle of leaves outside of my window, all clearly gremlins scurrying about. So naturally I assumed that they were always hiding under my bed, just waiting for me to step a foot on the floor if I had to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. So I'd usually jump off of and onto my bed if I had to go in the middle of the night.

Saw this the year it came out. I was 6. The 80s were a different time. Gremlins, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Transformers the Movie. All had some dark themes that were deemed okay for kids back then.

Well, today I learned that Kalle Anka is the Swedish name for Donald Duck. I didn't see Gremlins as a kid, but I became familiar with a slightly more kid-friendly version of the story through a series of books/records that the fast food chain Hardees put out as promotional items when the movie was released. I saw Gremlins 2 first, which as I'm sure others will have told you already, is much more comedic in tone. The sequel is actually my favorite of the two movies.

No this wasn't scary to an 80s kid. I mean we had children's cartoons based on R-rated movies. What traumatized us was the never ending story or having teachers having us watch the movie "old yeller" or "where the red fern grows" in like 4th grade. Now that stuff left a mark.

Not all kids are the same no matter the decade. Many parents actually complained about their kids getting scared by this movie. Hence, the PG-13 rating was born afterwards. Even children's cartoons based on R-rated movies adhered to censorship guidelines such as featuring laser guns in place of bullets.

@@jp3813 I can only speak from what I know. Growing up I was taught to shoot almost as soon as I could walk. I was hunting and watching R rated movies (just like most of my friends), and knew how to drive before I finished elementary school. And I (like a 3rd of my class) was smexual active by the time I finished 7th grade. That was also around the same time I accidentally walked in on my first drug deal ( half the football team were buying steroids when I walked into the locker room one day). And all of that doesn't even count that we were expected to look after ourselves and mediate our own disputes while our playing. So yeah to me kids seem pretty immature now.

As far as children's content in the western world goes, it's always been a mixed bag. 80s movies seemed to be anything goes but TV was heavily censored. Hence, when animes like DBZ, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, etc... made their way to the states; they were chopped to heck. There was even a requirement that cartoons had to be educational, resulting in shows like Captain Planet. By the time Avatar: The Last Airbender came around, cartoons were being written for adults as well. TMNT 2012 even featured the death of a main character, which is a very dark contrast to the goofy 1987 series. The most revered western animated show in recent years is Arcane, which is TV-14 but I'm sure many kids also watch it. Heck, many also play violent video games like GTA. And thanks to the internet, I wouldn't be surprised if many would just yawn at a Playboy magazine.

Repairman call something they can't track down the source of the problem as having Gremlins. Like a car that's having a problem but they can't figure out what's causing it or an electronic device that's having issues but they can't track down what's causing it. They have Gremlins causing the problems (not these little monsters) just things causing it to work correctly Which country are you from/in?

The author of the script , wrote it as a very dark , horror story. It was never meant to be family friendly. Buy Spielberg bought the story and made it fun. In the orig story , the gremlins chop the mothers head off and go to a McDonald's. Instead of eating the food , they killed all the customers and workers , then ate them all up.

what we now know as bugs in hardware/software, had an equivalent 80+ years ago Gremlins where a mythical creature that started somewhere during the WW2, when military electronic devices would present fails and malfunctions, people would semi-jockingly say that the gremlins were messing with them so that's why the unemployeed man knew about gremlins, and why the story has the inventor dad with many crappy creations

Hey Sess! Always love seeing you reacting to the films I grew up with as a child. 😊 To answer some of your questions.. Putz is a term for a loser and like the similarly used schmuck is of Jewish origin. YMCA is a real place. It stands for Young Men's Christian Association. It started as kinda a youth hostel combined with an activities center but focuses on activities today. Swimming and basketball being it's two main draws. (hostels are rare in America) And yes, there is a Young Women's Christian Association too. And finally you're correct most modern chimneys are too small for a person to climb but if it's an old enough house it's theoretically possible. "...is this really like a family movie!?..." It was rated PG. Today, maybe PG-13. What does that mean? "Parental Guidance". That means that parents should watch the movie and decide when it's right for their kids to _also_ watch it. These days, though, we bubble-wrap our kids so that when those kids grow up they have no idea how the real world works. The job of parents isn't to _protect_ their children _from_ the world, but to _prepare_ their children _for_ the world. That involves some protection, of course, but if your age-appropriate child (say around age 10 to 13, depending on how mature your kid is) watches this and has nightmares for weeks after... I think that's a problem with your parenting, _not_ the movie. It's a horror movie for kids. It's not really all that scary. "...don't understand why they want to go after Gizmo..." Because Gizmo isn't _like_ them. Gizmo is kind, sweet, caring. A genuinely nice being. The _others_ are mostly pranksters. They're not _evil,_ per se, they just don't really care about things like life. Cutting the brakes on a car is hilarious. Does it get people killed? Sure. And? What's your point? That, of course, is _their_ point of view. And, to be clear, they're not even all that worried if _they_ die as long as it's funny. In that kitchen scene, other gremlins watching would have laughed their butts off in the ways they got killed. It was _funny!_ Then there's Stripe. Stripe _isn't_ cute, or sweet, or just a prankster. Stripe is Gizmo's opposite, _genuinely_ evil, plotting, planning, _wanting_ to hurt. He's the one that incited the other to target Gizmo, and it's Gizmo's good nature that drew Stripe's ire. That and the fact that Gizmo wouldn't play along, refused to change with the rest of them. "...Y.M.C.A.!? That is a real place?..." Quite a few of them. Young Men's Christian Association. There were attempts to start of a YWCA (women's), YMBA (Buddhist), but they mostly just ended up merging with the YMCA. "...why is he so against foreign things..." Most of those foreign things he dislikes come from either Germany or Japan, both of which are countries he fought against, and lost friends to, during World War 2. Some people can't let go once the war is over, the hate continues. "...where in the heck did they get a real gun from!?..." Walmart. ... Seriously, this is happening in the USA. Guns are _not_ hard to come by. They're everywhere. There are more guns than _people_ in the USA. And that's _excluding_ the military. 21st highest gun deaths per capita of any country, _six times_ the rate of their neighbors to the north (Canada), though less than their poor neighbors to the south (Mexico). "...what are gremlins, though..." 'Gremlin' is sort of like 'ghost'. It's a blanket term that covers a lot of similarly described mythical creatures. A gremlin is a mischievous critter that messes with devices. The more technical the device, the more likely it is to be the target of such creatures. The idea has been around since we had carts. If your cart wheel kept falling off, the answer wasn't bad craftsmanship, but instead gremlins did it. Never seen, of course. They're usually considered small (part of how you don't see them, part of how they crawl into the machinery they mess with), and like above are generally pranksters... who simply don't care if their pranks are fatal. "...are humans even big enough for that to happen..." The better question is whether humans are narrow enough to get _down_ a chimney. There's usually not a lot of room in there. Anyway, falling even a short distance can do huge damage. A human body weighs, say, 150 pounds. If all that pressure from gravity is pushed onto your _neck,_ it can _absolutely_ kill you. It's one reason falling down _stairs_ can be fatal. All that has to happen is for part of him to catch on the rough bricks on one side, and then his body jams into the other side, and his neck could snap. It would, though, be unlucky in the extreme for him to _also_ become wedged up there and not fall the rest of the way. "...milk-duds... sounds like some kind of chocolate..." Chocolate covered caramel. You were close. "...turn off the water..." Probably not useful. One thing to remember about fountains is that they aren't pumping fresh water constantly. All they do is take water from the pool at the base and shoot it through some tubes, where it falls back into the pool to go around and around again. Turning the fountain off would just have the water in the basin at the bottom anyway. "...it wasn't fully their fault, though. They got tricked with a clock..." Whose fault was it that they spilled water on Gizmo? Theirs. And once they _had_ them, whose fault was it for not being _absolutely sure_ that it wasn't after midnight? Theirs. If your pet tricks you, that's on you as a pet owner. Your job is to be smarter than that. Plus, if they'd followed all the rules there never would have been any of them _to_ trick him into letting them eat after midnight. In other words... yes, it's their fault. All of it. Why do you think this guy wouldn't consider selling it? He _knows_ how dangerous they are, and he's taken up the responsibility of making sure things like this don't happen. Of course, the easiest way to do that would be to sit Gizmo out during daylight hours. Sure, you'd be killing Gizmo, but... you saw how bad things got when _one_ of them go into a _pool._ Now imagine the _same_ issue, but instead of a pool it's an _ocean!_ The world would die. "...it feels like a stark contrast to all the cozy and cutsey stuff..." You should see Violent Night. It's a movie about Santa Claus killing off a bunch of murderous thieves. Mind you, Santa in that movie was originally a violent barbarian himself over a thousand years ago. For real, though... don't watch it. It's not a good movie. "...did you see this as a kid..." I think I was 12 or 13 when I saw it. I have family that is younger than me who watched with me. It was mostly funny. Then again, we watched at home, not the dark theater. May have made a difference. "...more darker side of this time of year..." I hate this time of year myself. Different reason, of course, but I'd still rather just lock myself in my home and not go out for about two months before and a few weeks after. Have a nice day!

The reason some people don't like foreign things is because often they cost people in their own country the opportunities to get jobs making those things. Added on top, usually when something is made in another country, it's because the companies don't want to spend as much maling something, so they have people in other countries make it who have different labor laws so they don't have to pay as much. Also, when something is made elsewhere, they aren't able to do the same level of quality checks I don't think as they'd be able to if made in there own place. Overall, good stuff can come from other countries, and I'm not one to be all into American exclusivity, I think there is much moee potential to the world outside of just this one country, but so ofren, foreign products are just an excuse for America to not put in the work themselves, passing off the work to other countries so they can be lazy, which is definitely not a good mentality for any country.

The thing at 14:50 was a 16mm film projector. They were common in schools and businesses. Some people also had them at home. They were a low-cost alternative to theater projectors. The prints of movies for that format used about 1/4 as much film as 35mm. There was also 8mm.

Thank you for another fantastic reaction. I first watched Gremlins when it was released on VHS in 1985. I absolutely loved it. I especially loved Phoebe Cates (I was 17 or 18.) I've seen it every Christmas since then, my only Christmas tradition. A few Interesting facts about Gremlins: 1 - Despite obviously being a Christmas movie it was released in the USA on 8th June 1984, the same day as Ghostbusters. 2 - The puppeteers operating the gremlins at the bar were told to do whatever they wanted. Phoebe Cates had no idea what was going to happen in that part of the scene, and her jumps and hesitant movements are entirely genuine. 3 - The only confirmed or on-screen deaths are unpleasant people: Sadistic teacher/scientist Mr. Hanson, racist Mr. Futterman and his presumably equally racist wife, evil Mrs. Deagle, and probably the lazy, drunk, cowardly cops, though we don't see if the crash actually kills them.

Wonderful immersion and investment from the word go. Glad you were able to roll with the creepiness and morbidity alongside the holiday feels. [part 1 of my comment, because it was very long] 4:55 "Putz" is a Yiddish word for "total slob with a head full of nothing". You'll hear Jewish- and Polish-Americans use it at people who annoy them. Casting Phoebe Cates (Kate) and Judge Reinhold (Gerald) was either a coincidence, or they were referencing the one-sided romance when the two starred together 2 years earlier in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". A fun detail on multiple viewings: the director keeps cutting to Barney's reactions because, as it turns out, the dog they cast as Barney didn't understand that the mogwai were just puppets. Part of it is a testament to Zach Galligan (Billy) and the other human actors staying consistent with how they treat the mogwai during every take. 9:30 While Gizmo doesn't know exactly what will happen (there's no indication of mogwai having clairvoyancy), he's upset at having spawned because he knows his spawn will be more aggressive than he is. You can see the way he socially separates from them long before the mayhem starts. 10:50 'Tis true that the high-school science teacher is an odd character: he takes a way too clinical / pragmatic approach to his job and disregards any the danger involved. It's made or broken by the actor they cast, but in this case the director was a big fan of Glynn Turman for his oddball character in "Cooley High" and the match really worked. 11:20 They chose the title ... and wrote in the subplot with the Air Force veteran ... as a way to reference stories spread by British pilots, one of whom was Roald Dahl (who in 1943 wrote a Gremlin movie for Disney that never got produced). 14:55 A lot of schools in the 80s had projectors to show 8mm or 16mm prints of educational movies. A lot of them would be decades old, which sometimes meant the education in them would be severely out of date. Personal embarrassment: for the longest time I didn't understand the spiky objects inside the cardboard box, because I forgot the earlier scene where the teacher had to cut the cage open.

They opposed the "Santa Speech" as it was an Urban Myth on top of it being dark. It would have been one thing if it were true, but to propagate a myth that is so dark was a poor decision. Then the rest of it is also factually untrue: the least likely time someone is going to "self-terminate" is during the holidays. Especially since it has ZERO impact on the story, other than to eat up time. You could cut that, put in all the other cut material to replace the time (such as when Barney knocked over the porcelain snow man) and it would have no effect on the movie. Spielberg should have insisted Dante cut it.

[part 2 of my comment, because it was very long] 17:45 - 20:30 Believe it or not, this is the toned-down version of what Chris Columbus had in mind. He originally wrote the scene as R-rated horror where both Billy's mother and Barney get killed and their severed heads are rolled to Billy to syke him out. You'll have to cut Columbus some slack though, it was his 1st screenplay and he very much calmed down since then. Having swords on the wall (that can be easily removed or just fall down) is one of my favorite examples of Chekhov's Gun. Mrs. Deagle getting axed off might be a consolation to audiences for how her male counterpart, Henry F. Potter from the classic "It's a Wonderful Life", never faces consequences for his actions against George Bailey. 24:35 You're the first person I've heard ask "are they of legal drinking age?" This is both hilarious and, now that I'm thinking about it, a clever thematic tie to their lack of maturity despite having physically evolved. Another commenter has covered the trivia behind Kate's monologue, so I'll skip that. 27:20 In a rare lack of copyright melodrama, Warner Bros. was willing to show a Disney movie within their movie because they expected Disney to go bankrupt anyway. (This was right before Michael Eisner left Paramount to take Disney leadership and revamp their corporate structure into the relentless, ravenous empire we know and love.) 33:45 Viewers with a sharp ear will notice the newscaster mention Mrs. Deagle's husband Donald, a stock embezzler who got caught by Wall Street investigators and died in prison. I can't confirm this beyond rumors: apparently Polly Holliday (who played Mrs. Deagle) came up with this backstory and the director enjoyed it but a lot of scenes referencing it got trimmed out.

I truly wish I was around in 1984 to have seen Gremlins for the first time because this is one of my favorite Christmas movies ever but also because this movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the reason the MPAA had to make the PG-13 rating because these two movies were too extreme for the PG rating they got that's wild 😂🔥

I was 6 when I saw it in 84... and I can tell you, it was everything youd think it would be. It was my Star Wars... and it was the movie that made me a horror fan. I went to 2nd grade that year with a brand new metal Gremlins lunchbox and I couldnt have been more proud. 😂

Spike and some of the other gremlins were voiced by Frank Welker, probably one of the most famous voice actors in the business with almost 900 TV and movie credits under his belt over 53 years. If you've watched movies with voice acting, chances are you've heard his voice before. Probably his best known work is as Fred from the Scooby Doo cartoons, although most younger generation people probably know him as the voice of Megatron, Galvatron, Shockwave and Soundwave from the Transformers movies or Shao Kahn and Reptile in the original Mortal Kombat.
