Director Joe Dante had refused for years to do a sequel to Gremlins because making the first one was so stressful it almost gave him a nervous breakdown. The puppets were a nightmare and the last minute discision to make Gizmo "good" (he was originally evil and turned into a full gremlin) and that he had to be with Billy the whole movie created a ton of extra stress on production. But, it was such a big hit that the studio mandated a sequel, and after years of failing to find another director, they just gave Dante carte blanche to do what ever he wanted... and what he wanted (his words) was "To make a movie about why we didnt need a Gremlins 2". One positive the movie did give Joe was an opportunity to finally make a live action Looney Tunes movie. Dante is a massive LT and Bugs Bunny fan, even giving his animator Chuck Jones a cameo in several of his movies (and hiring him to do the animation for the intro / outro of this one). The humor in this is very much in the Looney Tunes style.. irreverent slapstick. Joe went on to make a real Looney Tunes movie (aka Looney Tunes: Back in Action) but it had so much studio meddling hes disowned it.

Christopher Lee also famously played the Bond villain Francisco Scaramanga in _The Man With The Golden Gun_ (1974). Lee himself was also a step-cousin of Ian Fleming, the original author who wrote the James Bond books. He also got involved with music. For _The Wicker Man_ (1973), for instance, he sung on its soundtrack as well as having appeared in the film. He even went on to perform heavy metal music and even became the oldest person to ever have a top-20 hit (he was 91 at the time of that success). Kate's "Abe Lincoln story" you were confused about is a joke on her sad story in the first film about her dad dying in the chimney on Christmas Eve. It was an infamous bit in the first one... either people "got it" and thought it was funny or thought "why is this sad, messed up story in the movie?". So here the joke is that Kate has a sob story for every holiday. Oh, and that movie theyre playing with the Octopus man... the inside joke is that Rick Baker, who made the gremlins for this, got his start making that silly costume about 20 years before this film. He went on to become one of the most celebrated and Oscar winning makeup FX artists in the film indistry.

New York city was pretty fun down outside of the very expensive areas of the upper West side and central park area. One of the main reasons is that the middle class population in the city mostly second or third generation children of immigrants of Italian,Irish, and Jewish heritage moved out of the city and into the suburbs. Meanwhile Latin American and Caribbean immigration boomed. But right as the demographic shifted the new immigrants had to deal with the US economy going into a recession that started in 1979-1980, which meant unemployment rates skyrocketed in the whole nation and it really effected new immigrants into the city because they did not have much to begin with. Anytime their is a economic problem like a recession crime rates increase as people become desperate. then Crack cocaine was introduced by drug dealers, while the city had been dealing with a epidemic levels of heroin abuse since the late 1960s Corruption in the city government and the police department did not help(a special unit tasked with stopping the drug dealers was found out to be selling the drugs they confiscated as.evidence). Rudy Guillani election to mayor in 1993 and a booming economy in the mid 1990s allows the city to clean up its image. While today Guilliani is vilified because of his ties to Final Trump, he was a Federal Proscector before becoming Mayor and spent most of his career as a lawyer putting mob bosses in prison. He cracked down on crime.
