RIP Dale Hawerchuk. The forgotten man on that line but this goal was not possible without him
@September20043 жыл бұрын
Actually, I don't think it would've mattered. I was kinda bothered by that play for years because I thought the goal would not have been possible if he hadn't interfered with the guy. But it turns out he was going for Larry Murphy, so it wouln't have mattered. My brother-in-law actually once had drinks with him and Hawerchuk said that the idea that he might have gotten a penalty still haunts him especially because it wouldn't have made a difference.

Gretz and Lemieux deferred. They told the coaches ducky takes the draw all day. Just greatness and unselfishness.
@ecstaticist3 жыл бұрын
@@September2004 No way. he was on vector for Lemieux and could have interfered with his back-swing at the very least. Anyway, this play is debated endlessly. It might have been the most exciting thing I ever saw in hockey and I cherish it. This was hockey in the 80s and it was The Canada Cup not the Russia Cup or International Cup.
@September20043 жыл бұрын
@@ecstaticist Look at it again at the 0:56 mark. He’s clearly closer to Murphy and headed in his direction. Even if he turned and went after Lemieux, Gretzky could’ve just passed it to Murphy. In fact, Hawerchuk always wondered why he didn’t do that since he’s done that type of pass countless times in Edmonton with someone like Kurri.

That was smart. Most people (including me) would've skated right to the puck but he realized Lemieux would get there anyway so why not get an extra step and just skate ahead instead? Great read, as you said.

And, as Mike Lange might have said, Lemieux beat him like a rented mule. Overlooked was the great play that Gretzky made with that pass, throwing it to where he knew Mario would be, and letting him skate onto the puck. To me the most important part of the play was Gretzky not wanting to take the draw. He hides against the far boards to not be marked, before beelining to where he could either grab the loose puck or set up in the zone, to draw everyone on him. The difference between him and everyone else is he had an iPad in his head, 30 years before the iPad.

If not for injuries, he might have actually still be around in 1987. He would have been 39 years old. This maybe would have been his final games?

I wonder if we're gonna get something similar for the 2026 Olympics... Crosby, to McDavid, to Bedard! He scores!

It's my first time ever seeing the camera angle trailing the play and I find it crazy how Hawerchuk gives USSR No. 27 a full-on hook and receives no inference call. It 100% resulted in Lemieux being so wide open for the pass. Difference times I suppose haha

Hey, at 57 seconds, isn't it interference on the soviet Nr. 27? He was covering Lemieux and got pulled down... if it were against my team, no way I'd let it go. Just saying...

Why is Lemieux so open? Hawerchuk hooked his man at the 57 second mark. wow.
