One of the greatest days of my life was picking up my first Greyhound from the adoption agency! I will never forget the way it changed me when I hugged my Greyhound for the first time.

Greyhounds are amazing! I'm getting my sixth retired racer for christmas. I have a trainer I buy them directly from, and it's been great, loving dogs I get from her. My latest is a 2 year old daughter of my heart dog I had to put to sleep in April. The one I get for christmas is another daughter of my heart dog, but from a different litter. I just love them, they're such loving creatures 🥰😍❤

Hi Natalie We're loving your videos! We're in the process of adopting a 1yr old greyhound. Can you suggest any safe fully enclosed areas for off lead play? We're in the Whitfords area.

Aw, thank you 😊 Congratulations on adopting a greyhound, you’ll love it, I’m sure. I’m about 20 mins north of you, we’re almost neighbours 😂 As far as a safe enclosed space is concerned, the only one I know of is the Morley vets. I’ve not used it but I know lots of grey owners who have. You pay a small fee and get to use the area for half an hour or so, and I think you can invite other greys along too, but you’d have to check. I would avoid dog parks like the plague, unless completely empty, however it is actually still illegal to let a greyhound off lead even in one of these. Legally, a greyhound cannot be allowed off lead in any public space, even if enclosed. Private property is different though, and the Morley Vets fit into that category. If you take your hound for a run with some other hounds or other dogs, I highly recommend that all dogs be muzzled as nips can happen during play and greyhounds tear easily. I hate muzzles, but they do have their uses. Get to know your hound and how they act off lead in a safe, legal space. Some will head for the horizon like a rocket, and others will enjoy a run but stay close to you. Give them time to bond with you so that the latter is more likely 😅 Honestly, it took Olive at least a year, maybe two, to really bond with me. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to join the Long Nose Society on Facebook. It’s a page for greyhounds and other sighthounds, and you will find a lot of good advice and support on there. They often organise meetups and greyhound walks which you may enjoy. There are a couple of greyhound meet up pages also. Might see you on the Facebook page or even at a greyhound gathering some time! All the best 😊🐾❤️

I'm quite serious about adopting a Greyhound, but I live in Canada and Greyhounds are so difficult to come by during COVID. (Most of our Greyhounds were given to us by our American neighbours before the border was shutdown). Any suggestions or information that you could provide would be a blessing!😢🙏

Wonderful to hear you’re thinking about adopting a greyhound and I’m sorry to hear about your current situation with border closures. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about how this might affect the adoption of hounds from across the border, as I’m in Australia. Have you contacted any of the usual greyhound adoption agencies to see whether they would still send you one? All the best with it! And stay safe 😷

@@NataliePowellAGreytLife Awesome. It's always a pleasure to meet a sibling in Christ. Great advice. My wife and I actually prayed about the topic of having a dog before we came into a preference for the Greyhound. But now it may be time to pray about this breed specifically.🤔😊 As the Spirit leads, we'll see.

At about 3:00 into this a young lady says she wants a greyhound because they are put down when they can't race anymore and that is not true at all. If that was true, this video would never have been made because all these "adoptable" greyhounds would've been put down. All retired greyhounds get good homes and are not put down or abandoned. They are not rescued, just retired.

Thank you for watching my video, but I wanted to say, respectfully, that you are incorrect. It's not your fault that you hold this opinion, many people do; the racing industry has managed to hide the truth very well for many years and it's one of the reasons I made my KZbin channel, to make people aware of how beautiful greyhounds are as pets and that they need people who are willing to adopt them to save them from a worse fate. I'm not saying all hounds have been mistreated by this industry, or that all in the industry mistreat their hounds, but the truth is that it happens. I believe Olive is in fact one of the lucky ones who had a happy experience with her trainers, as she loves everyone, particularly men with beards, and I know for a fact one of her trainers had a beard and was affectionate and kind with his dogs - I've seen it on video. However, in the very recent past, it was common practice to destroy, sometimes cruelly, Greyhounds who were deemed no longer useful in the racing industry. We have cases here in Australia of situations of mass culling of beautiful Greyhounds and the discovery of huge pits in the ground with as many as 30 or more hounds dumped and buried. Sometimes because they don't have it in them to chase, other times because they were injured during a race. They have been beaten and abused at times, in an effort to make them chase prey. I've seen it on video. This has sometimes also involved cruelty to other animals such as possums, which have been illegally used as live bait. Other times they have been shipped off to Asia for the meat market once their racing career was deemed over. This fact has been well covered in the news if you care to google. Many hounds were recently rescued from this awful death and shipped to loving homes around the world. Even though Greyhounds love to run fast and to chase, did you know that they can suffer horrific injuries during a race? People might think they are doing what they love when they see them racing, but they don't realise that it puts the hounds at risk every time. Fortunately, due to the amazing work of many rescue organisations, the adoption of Greyhounds as pets has become more popular around the world and more hounds have been saved and given wonderful homes. The racing industry has even been working with some of these rescue groups to rehome as many hounds as possible. Sorry for the long response, but I do hope that my reply has been helpful and informative to you. Again, thanks for watching :)

@@NataliePowellAGreytLife Fortunately, here in the USA, greyhounds are never put down. They get the best care and love from their handlers. Yes, they can get injured while racing, but adopted greyhounds also get injured, many seriously while running in a park, in their own yard or in a field. It's a risk you take every time you let your greyhound run. Racing is no worse than let them race around their yard. Every retired racing greyhound gets adopted or their owner keeps them. I know in AU there have been stricter regulations put in place recently to stop people from abusing or killing them. So more greyhounds in AU are getting adopted all the time. As for being sent to the meat market, that's all hype. China has their own greyhounds and they are a more civil country than people think they are. Only the poorest people there will eat dog meat. And I guarantee they're not eating greyhounds. Greyhounds have no meat on their bodies at all. They are all muscle. I've been involved with greyhounds just about 23 years now. I've adopted, fostered and found homes for many. Are there bad handlers? Yes, but they are quickly caught and prosecuted and not allowed to have greyhounds again. There are bad in every profession, bad teachers, bad priests and ministers, bad DRS, bad lawyers and bad Judges. But we don't paint them all with one big brush. Sadly the lying, scam activist groups here brain washed the people of FL and they voted to close all tracks. Worst thing FL ever did. Thousands of greyhounds had to be moved to other states to continue racing or were adopted, thousands of people lost their jobs and their economy took a loss. Greyhounds love to race, it's what they're bred for. Taking that away from them is cruelty.

@@ruthhagenbaugh2223 I believe I made a point of not painting all trainers or the whole racing industry with one brush. To say that hounds being sent to Asia for the meat market is just hype, is absolutely not true. It happens. I can't even bear to watch the video I've linked below in it's entirety and am sad to say that this is about hounds exported to China from Australia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIGQYpWYbch5htU kzbin.info/www/bejne/haqQf3aFd5WmlZY Australia and Ireland have been guilty of exporting many Greyhounds to China for one last stint at racing in terribly abusive and neglectful situations, to face certain death at the end of it with no option of rehoming. The Macau Canindrome was notorious for this and thankfully shut down in 2018. Thankfully, dedicated people were involved in bringing these hounds home and sending them out across the world to become much loved pets, many of them to your country. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naGQhop5nbWWpKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHjXdKqamLJ0d8k Also, technically, Greyhounds were used as sighthounds for hunting. Man's greed for the dollar has led them to use and exploit this skill in the form racing for their own financial gain. Can they injure themselves while playing and running in the back yard? Yes of course! But why purposefully put them in danger on the track? To argue that racing should continue so that people don't lose their jobs is just ludicrous. I sincerely hope that as someone involved with Greyhounds, you might do some research and be a better advocate for them.

They usually go through desexing before they are sent out for adoption. I guess it would depend on the reason you had for not wanting to desex your dog.

Why would you people put silly hats and things on dogs!!? That is so not good! Jackets and jumpers for cold weather, absolutely, but hats, sunglasses, etc. makes fools of them 😟😟🤪
@NataliePowellAGreytLife
@NataliePowellAGreytLife 2 жыл бұрын
Olive doesn’t wear silly hats, but she has a couple of snoods that she only wears on very cold mornings if her ears are cold. Some hounds and other dog breeds might wear special goggles to protect their eyes if they have pannus.
