Great tutorial Nick. What i did is to put an Ambient Occlusion shader on the Color and Luminance Channels (Luminance chanel at 50% mixed with black) and it works like a charm :)

I've seen another way to put shadows on Luminance materials is by using Cel shade and check the light and shadow option.
