Joe speaks about grief as a process to embrace and how it creates a climate of hope and resilience.
He believes that by forming real, lasting communities that promote connection, trust, hospitality, support and dialogue, we move closer to joy and a much richer life.
Joe Primo is the CEO of Good Grief, the organization that assists hundreds of children and families each month following the death of a mother, father or sibling. He currently serves on the advisory board of Option B at the Sheryl Sandberg and Dave Goldman Family Foundation. Primo formerly worked as a hospice Chaplain at both The Connecticut Hospice and The Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut. He received his Masters of Divinity from Yale University, where he concentrated on end-of-life care.

One of the most powerful Ted Talks I have ever watched. I am can personally relate to this because I was 12 when I lost my dad. Not only was it so hard adapting to change and life without him, grief in the end helped me turn my life around. Even though it has only been two years since he died, I have come to learn and realize so many things: memories never die, love heals, resiliency can not be taught, there is no timeline on grief and even though grief will always be apart of me, it doesn't have to dictate me. It was through many teachers, friends, social workers and counselors who helped me confront my grief and find ways to coping with it. After watching this, I realized how much grief has done good in my life. No, it did not bring back my dad and no it didn't protect me from the harsh reality but yes indeed it made me wake up and realize that life is so precious and we cannot take the time we have with others for granted. The difference between how I grieved two years ago to how I grieve now is that my grief no longer holds me down. Now, my grief pushes me forward and continues to make me a stronger person. I got here because after many sleep less nights, breakdowns and suicidal thoughts, I realized that I had a purpose. A purpose to live, a purpose to be happy, a purpose to be who I am. Yes, I did lose so much of myself when he died but the person I am now in incomparable to what I was before. Grief is this hurricane in my ear telling me to keep going because my struggles and hardships will lead me somewhere. So thank you Joe for being so truthful and honest about grief in kids because the more we continue to teach kids that grief is okay, much more will become resilient.

The most inspiring presentation about grief that I have read or heard or watched. It's only been 4 months since I lost my beautiful loving husband of 32 years. I am devastated. Watching this has painted a more positive and constructive view of what grief is and what it is meant to do. Thank you!

Out of all the ted talks I've watched that focus on grief, this is my favorite & the one I'm finding most helpful. I really wish I could have heard this when I was younger :')

This is annoying and the title is deceptive. This is about children dealing with grief

Wrong title deceiving. Lose a child and then use that title, doesn’t quite cut it! Choose your words carefully

It's really mourning that is good/necessary, not grief. Good can come from grief eventually... but grief isn't good or bad, right or wrong.. it just is. The key to how well any of us do after a painful loss, is mourning the loss - which is expressing our feelings externally and not keeping them bottled up inside.
