Wasn't expecting you to know about The King's Man version of Rasputin, lol. The real praise goes to the make up department for making the actor, Rhys Ifans, look as spot on as he did, because, while he's an outstanding actor, he's also a clean-shaven, blonde-haired Brit. According to that movie Rasputin was also a pretty adept ninja, lol.

That question about cause or symptom is such a great question that applies to so many figures in history. Did they shape history or was their rise a sign of a decaying order which would've changed even without them and they were just the person there at the perfect time? I think generally in history the answer is both. They never would've risen to power without the circumstances being perfect for it but once they were in power, they shaped the times in which they lived. Rasputin's no exception.

that "great man theory" versus "when conditions are ripe a great man will pop up and do what needs to be done" was, as far as I know, a debate among historians for a long time. And I think now most of the historians agree that history is a mix of both those ideas.

One of my English teachers once pointed out that often people perceived to have “strange” or “intense” eyes have a trait where some of the white is actually visible under the pupil. Edgar Allen Poe and Rasputin were the examples she used and Looking at those pictures I can see why. I think she also said that it was sometimes seen as a mark of high intelligence, but I never found much to back that up. But yeah, look at most normal eyeballs when look straight ahead and the pupil usually takes up the entire middle with no white visible around the top or bottom. But pictures of both Rasputin and Poe, you can clearly see a strip of white under the pupil. It’s strange but something I would have never noticed myself.

She was one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters. Hemophilia was a huge problem for descendants of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, in fact. There's no history of it prior to Queen Victoria, and only one of her children had it, but it's believed her daughters Alice and Beatrice passed the disease on to their children. The Tsarina was one of Alice's daughters, and so passed it to her son, Alexis. Hemophilia proved a true nightmare for the royal families of Europe. Rasputin was supposedly charismatic and may have simply had a knack for manipulating people. He may or may not have had any real skills or abilities. History is full of such people. Sometimes, that's all it takes. The Tsarina was far from the only superprotective royal or parent with a hemophiliac child. She just had the misfortune and bad judgment to let it influence her to make decisions that would doom her and her country in a time when there was no margin for error.

I think it’s worth mentioning that Nicholas and his family never lived in the winter palace but rather in the Alexander Palace, next to the Catherine palace in Tsarskoe Selo, a then town ~6 miles south of st. Petersburg. This change occurred after the assassination of Alexander II, when Alexander III thought the winter palace stopped being a safe residence Nicholas still went to the winter palace when he had to work, however.

Hi Mr. Chris, I'd like to recommend doing Extra History's one on the Ottoman ruler Suleiman the Great. I was in my AP European History class (I'm a sophomore) and for a game we were playing involving absolute rulers in Europe at the time I played as Suleiman the Great. I figured "Huh" and looked up a video, and I saw Extra History, a channel I knew from some videos you did from them. I watched their series on it and it was amazing. Even as a devoutly protestant evangelical Christian, this story of a Muslim ruler struck me incredibly deep and the way they told his story was beautiful. The character of Suleiman the Great is so alluring to me, and I'd definitely recommend the video. It really wants to make me learn more about Islamic history. Either way, I'd recommend it, very much so. Have a good day, sir. God bless.

Orthodoxy puts a lot of emphases on identifying with Jesus Christ through suffering. If you want to strictly follow the rules you need to fast all the fasts through the year (110 days) besides the regular 3days per week. During fasts you must abstain from sin,meat,eggs and milk. Until recently no Orthodox Church was allowed to have benches even though the liturgy is twice as long as the Catholic one.

14:09 You could say this about various types of men we call evil today. One example is H.H. Holmes. I abhor what the man did but he was a smart guy. If it wasn't for the circumstances of his childhood he would have probably been a great boon to the human race.

The story of Rasputin is absolutely nuts. I studied abroad in Russia a couple years ago, and our tour guide in Saint Petersburg took us to where he was killed and told us incredible details about him. The way he explained it, it was believed back then (and even today really) that he actually had the ability to heal and did heal the Tsars child. We hear about it and laugh it off as a funny story, but it might be more true than we'd like to think. Not to mention the strange details around his death, which only adds to the mystery. I'm not necessarily saying he truly had these mystical powers, but I don't think simply being a smooth talker would have led to the creation of such legends.
@AKTechX17
@AKTechX17 2 жыл бұрын
It’s actually not far fetched to believe that he did indeed help improve the condition of Alexei, the Czarina’s son with hemophilia. No magic or mystical healing powers involved. There are hypothesis like he could have prevented the son from taking aspirin (for religious reasons but would’ve been a good thing to do), which was a new drug at the time to treat pain but is also now known as a blood thinner. This is just one hypothesis, and there are others like hypnosis. He also stopped doctors from giving other treatments which may have made things worse as medical knowledge at the time wasn’t complete or flat out wrong about certain things.

He was intelligent, so, he may have been adept at reading people and their needs. After all ESP can be classified as highly refined deductive reasoning. Nothing mystical about that. Also, obviously very well adept at the art of seduction.

I loved The King's Man...saw it a couple weeks ago. I could have sworn Rasputin was played by Peter Stormare. He looked and sounded just like him. But it was Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, who I'm not familiar with. Same guy who was Hugh Grant's deeebie roommate in Notting Hill. Mind blown. Thanks for covering this, Chris...fascinating person.

It's weird that Rasputin was born within a few months of when my grandfather was born. My grandfather was a Unitarian minister, and was constantly having to move to a different parish. From Illinois to East Boston and New York to New Hampshire The constantly changing attitude toward the German last name and the his advocacy and coaching of sports would get him into trouble with parishioners.

Yeah, in Russia people can be kind with obsessed with religion or the occult, but it seems to be more of a phenomenon with older people. For example my own grandma from my dad's side asked me if I could talk to her dead husband, I was kinda creeped out as a kid... and that was after the Soviet Union.

I'd recommend the movie Nicholas and Alexandra for anyone wanting a good film portrayal of Rasputin. Tom Baker, best known for playing the Fourth Doctor on Doctor Who, did an excellent job in the role. As for the case or symptom question, I'd argue both. Alexei's hemophilia was vital in making Rasputin's rise to power possible, but, even if the fall of the Romanov dynasty was already inevitable (I believe it was), I don't think there's any question that he hastened it. Consider that the public image of his involvement with the royal family was so bad that there were vulgar cartoons produced that not only made suggestions about his relationship with the Tsarina, but also the four Grand Duchesses. And of course, the Tsarina being as superstitious as she was allowed him to take on the role he did. A previous fake miracle worker (the Frenchman mentioned at the end of the video) that had been associated with the family had even predicted that they would one day have another friend like him who would speak to them of God. On the bits about Stalin, his mother was dead set on the idea of his becoming a priest, though it was never an idea he cared for at all. And yes, he was Georgian, and his real surname was Dzhugashvili. His Georgian heritage meant that de-Stalinization didn't go over well at all in Georgia, leading to riots in Tbilisi. Finally, I agree with your feelings of sympathy toward Nicholas and Alexandra. I don't think they could have been worse-suited to the roles they held in history, but had they been given the chance to be a "normal" family, I think they would have excelled. I believe they were painfully aware of that, with one good example being what the Tsar said to his wife on the birth of Olga, their first daughter. He said that he was glad that the baby was a girl. As a girl, she belonged to them, but a boy would have belonged to Russia.

Just a note on pronunciation In Russian we typically convert the letter H to a G, because we don't have a corresponding sound in our everyday speech. The same is the case for the digraph th, which we pronounce as either a t or an f. We also usually drop suffixes like es and us. Thus that preacher would be known as Germogen, the archbishop as Teofan. The word tsar also doesn't sound like "zar" in Russian, but rather the ts is read pretty much as written, the two sounds merged into one. Surnames in Russian that end in "in" or "ov" get an "a" added at the end when speaking about females - Rasputina, Romanova, etc. Finally, we usually call the wife of a tsar "tsaritsa" rather than "tsarina".

Scriabin was a very interesting guy, and the whole "end of the world by music" thing is legit. His unfinished work Mysterium was supposed to be: "requiring special people, special artists and a completely new culture. The cast of performers includes an orchestra, a large mixed choir, an instrument with visual effects, dancers, a procession, incense, and rhythmic textural articulation. The cathedral in which it will take place will not be of one single type of stone but will continually change with the atmosphere and motion of the Mysterium. This will be done with the aid of mists and lights, which will modify the architectural contours. Scriabin intended the performance to be in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, a week-long event that would be followed by the end of the world and the replacement of the human race with "nobler beings". so yeah...his piano works are quite nice.

Alexandra grew up very sheltered. She was shy and quiet and was really more naïve than most others in Royal circles. She grew up without a mother so she lacked that nurturing and education in childhood. She was not well liked by Russian Aristocracy before she married Nicholas. If Alexander III lived longer, Nicholas may have married someone else.

11:20 - The idea of "[Domine] non sum dignus" is *very* old and has less to do with identifying with Jesus but a level of self-hatred and self-depracation that is quite common and heartily supported by the church. Telling people they are not worth God's mercy is a "neat" psychological trick. So self-flaggelation and other methods (like wearing thorny rose stems wrapped around your thighs during a pilgrimage) are less methods to identify or honor Jesus but means to make themselves more worthy in the eye of God. So it's less a worship of someone else than a means to self-elevate themselves. The Puritan's hate of music, dance and suchlike and embrace of misery is along those same lines.

Prussian literacy rate has been in the 80%+ at the time in question. And I'm sure other countries had a high rate as well. They just don't show up in the graph because they no longer exist under that name or in that form. Russia, on the other hand, with its huge army of serfs, has been about 50 years behind the west at that time.

6:53 Kit Carson the famed mountainman was also illiterate. Which was something he was always insecure about. His own soldiers took advantage of that when they realized he was illiterate when they noticed how he would sign dispatches without actually reading them. They began making orders for whiskey and would pass them to Carson telling him it was for something else. Carson sure enough would approve those supply orders and whiskey would be delivered. Carson would later confront his men and quarter master only to be shown that those whiskey requisitions had his mark on them. I can only imagine what his embarrassment was like. If it seems like I'm amused by Carson's embarrassment its probably because I'm a Navajo.

Perhaps they'll get into this more in the next video but that last part that they kind of just glossed over about having to send away their French mystic spiritual advisor several years ago I believe is almost if not just as important with Rasputin being able to ingratiate himself with the family as Alexei having hemophilia was. His name was Philippe Nizier-Vachot, and in an interview Helen Rappaport did for a podcast about Rasputin (she's written quite a few books about the late Romanov family) she recounts that after the Czarina dismisses him he's basically like no hard feelings another will come (a faith healer/mystic) to take my place. And after Alexandra finally has a boy she feels kind of guilty over succumbing to pressure to send Philippe away. So, this whole ordeal with Philippe and what he tells her kind of lays the ground work for why she's so adamant about not wanting to dismiss Rasputin when people start to complain about him as well.

I get a bit more entertainment from Oversimplified, but Extra definitely takes the cake in terms of # of subjects covered.

The actor who played him in The Kings Man was spot on in looks! Although I think they made him kind of silly. What a fascinating story though!

After these episodes, you are going to have to review the April Fools song he mentioned in the video! It is hilarious! (it is short, about 4 minutes.)

Rasputin has got to be one of the most interesting characters in Russian history, especially his death. I mean they poisoned this guy, shot him three times when the poison didn't work, beaten to death with a dumbbell and then thrown into the freezing cold water. Only then after he was thrown into the river he actually died. That's insane

I never knew there so many other mystics and cultists around the Russian royal court at the time. I figured that was part of the reason why he stood out.

Im very excited about this series hope you'll like it just as much as me and others. They always have a Lies episode after the main series explaining, debunking or adding to the myths and mistakes on which they made in their episode.

I was going to a Russian school when I was a kid and we learned a little bit about Rasputin, mostly that he had a lot of influence over a royal family. But a lot of nobles saw him for what he really was, but they couldn't do anything about it, since he aleegedly saved an heir to the throne he had all protection in the world

I think part of the reason we strangely keep these figures that could have been the best leader of their time is like you said, that question "what if they chose to do this instead of what they actually did." I think we all have a moment like that in our daily life.
