I remember the Serpent Men from the Conan cartoon in the 90s! That was one of my favourite cartoons when I was a little boy. I dunno how true to the source material it is, I haven't gone back to watch it since it was on tv. Feels better to just leave it as a fond memory.
@Chef_Alpo2 жыл бұрын
That was my favorite cartoon back then too, who could forget the opening theme? The entire series is available on youtube right now, apparently with Hasbro's ok. It holds up well for an older cartoon in my opinion, they did a good job of balancing a sense of danger with the restrictions of the target viewer age group. It's more a Conan themed product, it has its own take on the concepts locations and races presented by Ron Howard.

Oh man I loved this. The serpent men are so cool and you did a great job dissecting them and going into their lore which I haven't seen anyone else do before. Their culture is really interesting and it's cool that at Well of Skelos you actually unlock a set of weapons inspired or actually designed by them. What are your thoughts on the boss variants encountered in the Siptah vaults?

Odd that the Degenerate seems to almost be asking you to kill him during the dungeon
@robrib2682Ай бұрын
Just from the cutscene in Siptah, he could be the equivalent of an old bitter man who as a young man tried to claw his way to a place where his children could've been born to only then realize that it was never possible when he got there. So now he sits on his throne watching entropy erase his people and its possible that Set has locked their version of heaven behind dying in opposition to humanity (which again, would make sense why he summons serpentmen ghosts to fight you. They are trying to possibly get into snake Valhalla) then again all of this is just a theory and I could be very wrong

Just picked up the soon to be out of print Conan rpg book, it doesn't have the serpent men listed. Must be in one of the adventure books, book of Skelos maybe. I've had only a small interest in Conan in the past, but have grown more into it in recent years with the books being public domain and free audio books of them on Librevox, the Conan Exiles game. And the recent actions of WotC driving some gamers away have brought me more into the Conan lore. This is where I should have been a long time ago.
@NyarlathotepCrawlingChaos2 жыл бұрын
Firstly, let me say that I appreciate the hell out of you putting in the effort to make a dedicated lore video about this stuff. Especially the serpent-men, as they get way too little attention considering the overall impact they had on the world all these stories take place in. Their overarching importance to the lore is too often overlooked. So yeah, mad props to you. That said, I do have some criticisms. It seems you’re drawing very heavily from Marvel Comics version of Conan rather than R. E. Howard’s actual works (or those of his contemporaries and correspondences such as H. P. Lovecraft, C. A. Smith, L. Carter, etc.), where the actual stories and lore from Howard and the others would honestly have been more accurate and appropriate. I say this because the Marvel Comics version of Conan and the lore associated with his stories within the comics continuity are radically different from the actual lore of Howard’s works. The Marvel Comics lore also doesn’t really have much (if any) connections to the Funcom games (Age of Conan Unchained and Conan Exiles respectively), which are based upon the original stories Howard and the others published and didn’t publish. As a side note, if you want to go the comic route, a far better source for you to draw from is the Dark Horse Comics version of Conan and Kull, both of which more accurately follow the lore of the original stories (and have amazing artwork too). Still very good, but as a fan, I just had to clarify.

I agree to a point, but it is necessary to make a distinction of which run of Comics are you debating. Marvel's Savage Sword of Conan, the black and white magazine format had adapt most of REH stories in a true fashion. As for being a magazine it did not abide to the Comic Authority Code - so you will have a more realistic depiction of violence, sex connotations, etc. Marvel's Conan the Barbarian, and the runs of Dark Horse do have a tendency to be watery down and often assume a "comic hero" aspect. I, for one, would be looking into the Black and White Savage Sword of Conan, mainly early ones which adapted in length.

In the Eastern mythos, nagas are water serpents that are considered to be good omens and play key roles in the Buddhist tradition of being taught the higher teaching of the Buddha as a result of shielding him from monsoon rains. This teaching was alleged to be taught to Nagarjuna, who taught this hidden or philosophically inferred aspect of the Buddha's teaching to later adepts. It is said he had a kind of travelling dream where he was taken to the water underworld of the nagas where this was revealed to him. When the Indian sub-continent experiences a tsunami event the waves draw far back enough to reveal ancient cities submerged, such as the ancient city of Dwarka. This is the reality that these folk tales are attached to. Now when Nagarjuna said that he was taught by the Nagas, was he revealing an ancient teaching from lost times? He was the provost of the world's largest college at the time after all. Here's more on Dwaka, its also related to Lord Krishna: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpTZe4xuprida5I

Excellent video although a sidenote, to be capable of higher thought processes the race must be Sapient and not Sentient as to be sentient just means to be capable of having recognizable emotions whereas sapient is where the creature is capable of using higher level thinking and logic. For example lobsters and crabs are not sentient or sapient, your dog or cat is sentient, you and chimpanzees are sapient. at least I'm pretty sure I could be totally wrong but that's what I recall anyways.

I don't really do theories. But for this I make an exception, why not both. (Head canon/ writer shenanigans begin) A Great Spell War on multiple fronts. The Serpent men vs their Lizard Men rivals with the back drop of Civil War. Towards it's climax one of the Serpent men starts forming a ritual intended to wipe out both the Lizard men and some of their rivals. In which due to his mastery of magic and ability to eliminate the threats within and outside the empire would crown itself Emperor. But then the human slaves rose up and slew him causing the massive spell to go haywire killing most of the Serpentmen and Lizard men and forcing both sides into hiding. I am thinking targeted Chernobyl via blood magic ritual. Probably not the best theory but I don't really do this kind of thing, I think it's cool though. Hopefully it makes sense at the very least and is as much fun to read as it was for me to write.
