F18 Avionics tech here 9:50 right switch is the trim switch. The left switch we refer to as the Castle switch which is to designate which display (LDDI, RDDI, HUD, MPCD) you want to highlight and then use HOTAS to move the cursor on the screen to select different functions (so you dont have to physically press the buttons on the screens) Example: Lets say you want the left digital display indicator (LDDI) to display the HUD. You would press left on the castle switch then utilizing the button youre talking about at the 17:15 mark as a cursor to perform functions on the display. 17:15 That switch is essentially used as a mouse. If you highlight a display then you use that to move a cursor on the display. if the MPCD is highlighted then it can be used to slew the map around. 17:55 That is the Comm switch. Up is for transmitting on Comm 1 down is for transmitting on Comm 2 18:46 That is the switch for the speed brake

Awesome thanks. I want it as realistic as possible so the controls need to be just like the real thing. I’m sorry to say that a full-size real F/A-18 is to expensive for me. But I would love to have one of those parked in my backyard. Haha, I don’t think I could afford to fuel one F/A-18… So it is great that winning has these kind of controls. Just like the real thing.

Strangely enough it was the last couple of sentences that were the most helpful to me; I'm a paraplegic and often wondered about how to get rudder and steering functionality without foot pedals, and then you said it! The center stick can be ordered with a rotating zed axis! Boom, looks like i might be able to get into this hobby after all!
@jemimus4 жыл бұрын
It might be worth mentioning, that on many HOTAS systems, you are able to map any axis to any function. So a Virpil throttle, for instance, has several axis controls besides the throttle lever itself, and these could be mapped to in-game rudder controls too. I agree that a z-axis in the stick itself is the most intuitive. I should add, that like with the Winwing, there is software out there, like Joystick gremlin, that is able to map buttons to 'virtual' axis, which can then be mapped in-game.
@davidlund48424 жыл бұрын
@@jemimus Oh very interesting, that was very helpful, thank you!

Using the Z axis on the sticks that have it works really well for aeroplanes, it's bit of a chore for helos though . Mat Wagner (Wags) who works for Eagle Dynamics and does lots of YT DCS guides I believe is also a paraplegic. Might be worth looking up his set up. Hit up the Hoggit group on Reddit, I am sure they will give you some advise, there might be others in the same situation.

Up/Down switch on the front of the throttle is supposed to be the radar elevation control. Controls on the right side of the throttle that you were curious about is for the dispense countermeasures, select radio, and use the speed brake. Chuck's Guide (Part 3) has a detailed layout of the HOTAS controls on the real life Hornet. Whether you want to keep it or not is really up to your personal preference.

Cap, you completely removed the spring, not realizing that the axis starts at 0 on the idle stop... When you lift the fingerlifts and pull back or push forward from the furthest aft position it activates buttons for idle/cutoff. If you have a look at the manual there are two alan screws, one on each side, one adjusts the position of the throttle grips and the other adjusts the ab detent. You can soften the detent to where it's no longer there, instead of removing the spring for the lifts.

if you have a magnet around and it sticks in the slightest, then the shell is either some type of steel, or stainless steel (generally SS is considered non-magnetic, but many types are a little magnetic). With that said it could be Aluminum, but it wouldn't be that heavy. If you move a magnet across the surface (of Al or copper), and you 'feel' a drag then it's one of those two metals, due to eddy currents being created by the magnet in the metal (over simplified explanation).

Grim Reapers Frankly that desk looks very easily shakable. A sturdier desk would likely solve that. I personally really like the detents on my Warthog HOTAS. I remove the afterburner detent most of the time, because C-17s and other trash haulers don’t have them, but the Idle detent is really useful for controlling thrust reversers.
