The final video in our "Keith Rucker" boring bar series! It's all completed and in Keith's hands. We learned a lot during this process and we're glad we had the opportunity to work with Keith and Robin!

Another great video to end this series on. It's funny to think that to the eyes of most people this bar is nearly as simple as a tool can get. Just a bar with a tiny piece of hard stuff clamped in it. What's the big deal? But as you've shown, the cleverness and subtlety involved, from design to execution, is truly, truly impressive. Thanks for sharing Matt

Hi Steve, grinding solid carbide is very time consuming. Back in the late 60s and early 70s, I had to repair and maintain some solid carbide progressive dies. They ran .007 thick stainless strip stock at 1100 stokes per minute and made loads of parts, but what a pain to keep them running!
@SolidRockMachineShopInc

Hello, I enjoyed this video series very much. Watching this final video though a question does come up about cutting threads with such high helix angle that necessitate inclining the cutting insert. With the cutting edge inclined where do you set your centre height? At the toe (leading edge)? heel (trailing edge) ? midway of cutting edge?
@strangefruit8776

@ROBRENZ
@ROBRENZ 5 жыл бұрын
The bar is designed with the insert on center height at the middle of the tip width. The tool must be this way to generate the proper form. In this case Kieth can just put the bar center on center height and the insert will be at the right height.
@dimtt2
@dimtt2 5 жыл бұрын
@@ROBRENZ Does this have to do with the way you calculated the compound side relief angles for this particular application? Or is it a general rule? And to make my question more specific, if I was to be using a commercial inserted boring bar with a special inclined shim under the insert such as demonstrated here www.mitsubishicarbide.com/en/technical_information/tec_turning_tools/tec_threading/tec_threading_formula_top/tec_threading_formula where would I need to set my centre height?

Hello Steve, l found my way to your channel after watching Kieth's acme nut video. Good work from you guys. I now need to catch up with your other videos, so many happy hours viewing ahead. Greetings to another branch of the Barton clan. My name is Michael, the same as your son. Do you have English ancestors by any chance? Best regards, Mike

Hi Mike, We have an English neighbor that told us our last name was more Irish than English. I got really curious recently so I've been working on our family tree and one side (not the Barton side) I was able to trace all the way back to Scotland for several centuries, they'd go from England and Ireland for a little bit but always end up back in Scotland. The Barton side of our family is really hard to trace but I'm working on it! I'd love to know our family history!
@kathyb7126
@kathyb7126 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, so I did a bit of digging and possibly traced our Barton name back to Hadlow, Kent, England in 1680 for at least 2 generations. I haven't been able to go back farther than that.

looking great so far Steve! It's alot of work for one piece but that's on the original designer of that lathe's acme thread for not using a "standard" acme thread. I wonder if the coarseness of this thread gives the wanted feel when operating the crank at the machine? Or if a finer acme, a standard, would do the job without the repair/replacement problems this "far out" design caused? in any event, thanks to you and Robin for a great machining series.

We spent way more time on the videos than the bar. This was about my journey in an area that was new for me. It was more about the learning than the economics. Keith could have made it anything he wanted to but I believe his goal is restoring to the original but I agree with you on the feel. Robin did an awesome job in the design an it was nice working with him and Keith on this project. Steve

@@rickbrandt9559 Quite possibly he does not. There are many reasons for watching content like this. Maybe he wishes to learn ? Sufficiently valid question given the wide number of manufacturers of lathes in the last 150 years . All of whom did certain things differently. No one is going to have the same feel if moving to a different brand name machine.

I've got the exact opposite view. I feel the intro sets the mood nicely before getting into the tech and I like to see your own style developing. The videos are getting more polished with every episode. If it were a straight instructional video that would be cool too and I'd happily watch it but with the personal touch in all your vids I almost feel that the Bartons are neighbours of mine! From my point of view, you can never go too heavy on the details. As you casually explain things while working you communicate volumes. It really does remind me of the best tradesmen I've worked with (and learnt a lot from). Matt
