That’s actually a fun question, but answering it is a little weird because I have to phrase it under the assumption that I have and/or recognize style- given the facts of my career we can assume that I do understand style at least a little bit, so here goes. The easy answer is that it’s a gut feeling. Every barber or stylist will have a little voice in their head that goes “dude THIS would look rad” and often times glancing at the back of peoples heads in the movie theater or something will have the stylist brain thinking about what everyone in front of them should be doing with their hair. But this sort of instinct can be refined and honed. First you need to practice listening to it- when I think something will look rad on a client I just share what I think, and sometime they agree but sometimes they don’t, but I put it out there whenever it’s appropriate to do so. Another thing is to actively look at different styles- I grew up as a scenester playing in bands, watching subcultures change and grow in my actual life, informing my own tastes as far as what looks good or bad. When I realized the value this brought I started collecting books by photographers who follow(ed) various sub cultures (like Derek Ridgers is a great one) and by ingesting this kind of content it sculpts your tastes. Like when he was talking about his hair I went “oh like Sam Elliot” because I had a vague little memory as a kid of my mom drooling over Sam Elliot in some movie 😂 but that little memory logged itself into my Rolodex of looks/vibes/styles and it was sitting in the back of my brain to pull up when small aspects of this models style (and hair texture, mustache, head shape, etc) fit the mold required to support a full blown 80’s hunk look. I don’t know if that makes sense 😂

awesome cut! thanks ! One question; On the sides, on this cut you went super square shaped, like you said. On other videos ive seen you do a straight line but more on an angle outwards, like more diagonal. Is this just dependant on Headshape? thanks

That “diagonal outward” shape will add more weight to the top of the cut, essentially less layers or more graduation, which will push the silhouette of the cut outward creating a weight line.
