Just bought my 1st Dahlia. 😍 I kill house plants 🥹 But have become an avid rose grower in my new garden. 🌹 A before and after vid would rock!! Huge thanks ❤

What a great, concise, video. Thanks. Near the end, you show a tall, unpinched stem about to flower. I thought you were going to say sacrifice the bud and pinch the stalk, but you didn’t. I’m assuming that if you had pinched, the best you might expect for the season, would be a dahlia bush with no flowers. Am I right? You’d never have guessed it but I’m new to this. I was pondering this very question at about 6am this morning, but decided I should research before taking the bull by the horns. I have at least three plants in this state but another 10 that are slower growing and salvageable I think. I’ll certainly pinch those but the first three? Leave them and do better next year? R

You gained a subscriber for your clear and concise video. This is really helpful for a new dahlia plant mom. I have a question and hope you can help me. I am presprouting my dahlias and one of them is already about a foot tall but it only has about 3 pairs of leaves. It’s not as bushy as yours. Is it already safe to pinch them at this point?
@AntonioValenteFlower Жыл бұрын
I’d go ahead and pinch. I would typically pinch as I am planting outdoors however. When will you be planting outdoors?

I have several of my dahlias about the same size as yours with flower buds on them. My dahlias usually grow super tall before they bud. What should I do? Wait for the flower to bloom then cut it or pinch it now?

It’ll hurt, but I’d go ahead and pinch now. You’ll be glad you did in a couple weeks

I am worried because I pinched mine today because it has been so hot and dry out earlier today but now it is supposed to rain tomorrow 40% chance. Will it be ok if they get wet 24 hrs later? or how long before it is safe for rain after pinching them off? first timer here in Indiana growing them! I bought my tubers from Brecks.

Right on time; I'm about to plant my dahlia tubers in about 2 weeks! Do you think one could root the cut stem if long enough?
@AntonioValenteFlower3 жыл бұрын
For cuttings, you have to cut closer to the tuber. Ive had good results with that. I’ve tried stem cuttings, but they haven’t taken for me. If you do try, let me know! ☺️

The one time I grew dahlias i thought they were just way too big, the stems far too thick to use. Now after seeing this, i'll grow them again - does this technique work on tuber and seed grown plants? Thank you for this Antonio.

Yes, this will work on either tuber or seed grown plants. Try it! Stems will be much more useable

Great video! I live in 8b. It’s early May & my dahlia’s are already between 12” & 16” tall with multiple leaf pair stems coming off of them. Is it too early down here to pinch? You mentioned July but you are much further north.

Not too early. In fact, that sounds like the perfect height for pinching 👍

Hi, thanks for this, it's really helpful. I have heard you shouldn't cut them after rain or water them 24 hrs after cutting as they are hollow. What would you advise? Thanks Kate.

Hmmm I’ve never heard that. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to wait tho. But honestly, I’ve been growing them since childhood and never really noticed any issues.

I didn't know I was supposed to do this now many of mine are so tall! some 4' with thick center stems. Is it ever too late to pinch? or when I go to cut do I maybe just go a little further down the first time?

Exactly! Your first cut can be your “pinch”

I have just started my Dahlia passion. I have Black Dahlia and Red XXL Cancun Dahlia. They're all in a flower bed not containers this year. The XXL Cancun Dahlia are supposed to be 18" but they're short and mounding with many flowers. How do I get it to grow UP? I want bouquets. Should I be pinching them? Is it watering? With the Black Dahlias they're about 8 inches in height 1 plant is 1 stalk and a few leaves, the other looks like it has several plants coming up from the flower bed. But each plant coming up has a 1 singular stalk. Help? Thank you.
@AntonioValenteFlower2 жыл бұрын
Definitely pinch! You’ll encourage the dahlias to branch out and produce more flowers. And yes, dahlias need to be watered. If you aren’t getting rain, make sure you’re watering, particularly if it’s a hot season.
@LadyAdelinda2 жыл бұрын
@@AntonioValenteFlower ok.. so I'll pinch both once they get taller...I just don't think the one will grow any taller for some bizarre reason... I'll pinch it and see what happens. Thank you for your advice!!
