I believe a have this variety that I did grow from a seed here in So Cal -and it' a match to the mother tree. The mother tree was an old variety with thorns but not grafted . So happy I grew it from seed - wonderful grapefruit sized fruit .

Love my tree. The fruit is huge, anywhere from 1 - 1 1/3 cups of juice per lemon. It's sweeter than traditional lemons, so you don't have to add as much sugar. I keep mine shorter, so it's easier to maintain and when the new branches form, I just cut off the thorns so I don't have to deal with them
@EatYourBackyard4 жыл бұрын
Yep, good idea to trim the thorns.

I bought a Ponderosa at Home Depot and it has produced fruit. The fruit never turns yellow, remaining green. Do I need to do something else beside fertilizing with citrus spikes?
@EatYourBackyard2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need to give it a good organic like fish emulsion or bunny manure, give it granular micro nutrients, something like those 10 jars of dynomite you can get at stores. With those 2 ingredients and no other stressors, it should jump way up. Also, citrus likes to have very little grass under the canopy, although I find that impractical in a yard mostly. Also, I hope you will also check out my new original music channel and subscribe for all the new releases. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aH_Sg5imqaqKaac

Hi there! We are new to Florida and earlier this year we planted a Ponderosa 🍋 tree. It came with fruit already started and we’ve been waiting anxiously for them to ripen. Any advice on knowing when to pick the fruit!? The fruit is definitely yellow with some areas a tinge if green. I’m trying not to be impatient, but after waiting so long, it’s hard not to be!
@EatYourBackyard4 жыл бұрын
Congrats, and great pick for a lemon tree! I usually wait for them to turn a bit yellow. I usually harvest mine around December, but sometimes pick them a bit early. I have some on my tree now, maybe I will make a vid to show what they are like when you pick them this time of year.

Now I know what I have. I couldn't tell if it is a lemon, lime, or orange, or grapefruit. Thorny tree OUCH!!! Big fruit, thick peel with orangish colored fruit almost like an orange, but bite into it and, NO! It's definitely NOT an orange, lime, or grapefruit. Extremely sour! Your video solved a problem that's been puzzling me for two years since moving to this property. Thank you!

i have a ponderosa that have some lemons that wont ripen or turn yellow. there big but green and have been that way for months. and now it is flowering more than before making new lemons the old ones are still there and green. have u seen this with ur lemons?
@Curio4856 жыл бұрын
Just be patient. They will be dark green for months. It takes almost 9 months for the fruit to mature and during this time new generations will also begin. Also good idea to invest in a good manual juicer that can handle the large fruit. I like to freeze the juice into cubes and save them in the freezer in plastic bags for the off season.

So when do you actually pick the fruit? I planted one about 4 months ago, I live in Houston, TX and there is one large lemon and it's kinda a green/yellow color and I'mstarting to get new flowers and new little fruit, and I'm not sure if I should pick the one on there right now or notthanks

My lemons are really big, bigger than the ones in this video. The rind is super thick and inside the fruit is small. I'm not sure what kind these are. I thought ponderosa but from this video maybe not.

Yours are the true ponderosa lemon. I'm not so sure the ones in this video are as their rinds are not nearly as thick as one would expect.

I don't think so, best to get it grafted to the right kind of root stock, best to get citrus from a reputable nursery.

love ur video. how does this differ from the generic lemon we get at market? i'm in CA and i want to grow a dwarf lemon tree indoors. i saw online a 'dwarf ponderosa tree' but i'm confused how an indoor "dwarf" tree can produce these large lemons and main a small tree? if you can offer any advice on what i can grow giving my location and desire for a normal (non meyer) edible lemon i'd love to hear from you. also, what about a perennial lemon bonsai? what are those lemons like? thanks for reading and hopefully some insight. regards! Dee

They are much bigger and more tart. I think the key to indoor growing is a big pot.

i have two meyer lemon trees. one (larger one) inside a screened patio and its thriving and giving me amazing fruit. i have another one in the ground outside and i had great crops from it but now this little tree is getting hit with little black spots and powder and some of its leaves are getting discolored, curly, and are falling off. it also has some pest bug issues. how do u recommend i go about treating this tree. its grafted and i believe was treated for the really bad disease that citrus gets that everyone freaks out about. both trees are in fact. btw the tree thats not doing good is about 3ft tall. (both trees were purchased as citrus bushes. thanks! jake
@EatYourBackyard9 жыл бұрын
TheFishGuy86 Ut oh, yeah. If it has citrus blight, there really is only one way to deal with it... They generally cut them down and burn them. If it isn't that, then maybe I would try a strong garlic and dish soap mixture, spray that all over and hope for the best. I personally don't spend much effort with trees that are dying fast. I would rather just plant something new that is easier to grow.

I am trying to find a tree that we had when I lived in Texas as a girl. Love the edible gardening. I thought it was a Ponderosa lemon. However, I do not recall that it had a thick skin. The fruits looked just like a grapefruit and as I recall, had a similar rind. Any input for me?
