I think the view from your guys picnic towards the mountain was really cool! You could see the clouds rolling down the side of the mountain and it had such a picturesque view!

Have you ever heard of the Forgotten Highway? What a road with such beautiful scenery! It was amazing that we had a clear day because it's not always the case.
@shirleymcnceil87492 жыл бұрын
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders . Yes it is often covered on cloud. In fact the last time we were there we didn't see the mountain at all. I hadn't heard of the Forgotten Highway until fairly recently. It is now on my next must do NZ trips. That and the trip from Coromandal to Gisborne coastal road. Enjoy your continued adventures.

My Mum lived in Opunake when she was a kid back in the 1950's, before they walked to school they had to do their farm chores, I remember she told me when it was ice cold mornings they'd race for the cow paddy's and stand in it to warm up their frost bitten feet, they couldn't afford a lot back then and shoe's was a luxury, my Granny made their clothing or they were handed down from other families, my Granny use to make underwear out of the Mt Egmont flour bags, my mum said they were warm but itchy and the Mt Egmont bit was on the bum 😂, hard times back then but good times my Mum reckon, but she always said she never got tired of the scenery from the mountain and that's understandable it's beautiful even with cloud cover and it's Mt Tarawera you can see and Whaakari/ White Island on a clear day from that lookout @7:20 my hubby and I did the same thing and it was such a stunning view the binoculars where handy, thanks for taking me back to my Mum's old stomping grounds that I must go and see again soon 👍🏽
@GrowingUpWithoutBorders2 жыл бұрын
Wow! The girls and I couldn't believe this. Times were tough back then. We all have it SO good don't we. I remember my Swiss grandma knitting underwear and I thought this was the funniest thing in the world but they probably had to as well. Cow paddy's to warm up OMG!!😂😂
@Megan7088-62 жыл бұрын
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders I couldn't believe it when my Mum told me the good old stories but my mum's older Sister confirmed and they both said with laughter "they really hated wearing the flour bag undies" 'as they called them 😂 and when she told me about the cow 💩, I said to my Mum "eww your feet would of been stink all day at school, her reply was all the kids that went to her school had stink feet 🤣🤣 the stories just get better, Our Granny's believed warmth over fashion first, even if it was itchy 😂

Aww, Kia ora my friend, lovely story, you nearly wrote a book🤣our nanny's and mums had it hard back then but they were survivors, not sure about the undies they wore out of a flour bag🤣think I had real undies...lol but I remember those big itchy jumpers we use to wear...lol and yes cow patty's, who didn't do it, had a teacher named Mr rat he would always check our feet before entering class...hehe, hope all is well my friend, take care🥰

@@johnpaki1534 Hi John, 😂 everything is great, when I sent my comment i was like "Oh heck that's long 🤣 hahaha, algud some people like a good old story, I wore those itchy Jumper's back in school, I use to call them 'Jerseys' and yes times were tuff back in our Granny's days and anything and everything was used even the Mt Egmont flour bags, my Aunt in Matata still has a pair she kept all these years, they're a little tattered now but still has the Mt Egmont logo on the bottom 🤣 have a wonderful day John and batton down the hatches we're in for a Cyclone 🌀

You can hire a golf cart modified to run on rails and spend a day riding the old railway from Taumaranui to Whangamomona, something I plan to do one of these days. I have driven the forgotten highway a couple times and I think it is worth the drive. Sure it's a windy gravel road with no cell coverage in places, but you just take it easy and it's no big deal. There's a waterfall down a side road somewhere near the middle that's a nice easy walk, and the "bridge to nowhere" and a bunch of other things to see along the way.
@GrowingUpWithoutBorders2 жыл бұрын
A golf cart would be a fun way to do it! I hope you manage to do it soon. Just bring water in case you get stuck.

Watching from my couch at home in Wellington (NZ). I've never been to the west coast area of the North and South Islands. Must of enjoyed the view above the clouds, for me the best view I've had is from an A320 airbus Air NZ. I'm hoping to go to Sydney at the end of the year (last visit January 2017). Good cheap train and ferry service that takes you everywhere. Otherwise I'll holiday somewhere though I usually go to Taupo and Auckland. Regional airfares cost more than a trip to Aussie. NZ cities are fine, though I usually drive.
@GrowingUpWithoutBorders2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's easy enough to just drive to the different NZ cities/towns. Everything is still pretty close. We loved the view of the Mount and couldn't believe we had such a clear day to see it too! Hope you enjoy Sydney! We've never been but we're about to go there soon too!
