F-22 infiltration missions are so fun. Just sneaking around and then "whoops, target dead". Of course, it also shows one of the F-22's biggest limitation: the lack of internal weapons storage. I wonder if the stealth drop tank technology being researched to extend its range can also be used to load up more missiles on its wings without compromising stealth.
@TheOriginalFaxon12 сағат бұрын
Stealth weapons pods that open to drop a missile before closing again, letting you use standard AIM-120s or a modern equivalent. They can make a missile with the range of the 120D that's a lot smaller now due to a reduction in the size of the engine needed for the same thrust, might as well take advantage of it. The real question is if they have native stealth air-to-air missiles in the works or not, to allow you to mount them on the outside of the fighter, or if that's even worth the effort. I suspect it may be necessary to modify the payload on a per-aircraft basis to prevent it breaking up the stealth profile of the carrying aircraft in unexpected ways, so weapons pods may be the better bet long term.
@jakammor444912 сағат бұрын
@@TheOriginalFaxon stealth messes with aerodynamics so I would say that missiles wont get stealthy so they could be carried on the outside.
@martinselame902911 сағат бұрын
@@jakammor4449 They can still get RAM coatings, they do that for the F-35 afaik. I guess it is not as good, but it´s probably better than having a missile with a larger RCS than the fighter itself.
@jakammor444911 сағат бұрын
@@martinselame9029 Think of it this way, what would be the mission set of a loadout where you care enough about stealth to use RAM coated externally mounted missiles, but . . . you also DONT care enough about stealth to where you would sacrifice it to have ** Externally mounted Missiles? ** My point being that by the time you are willing to use externally mounted missiles, you by extension must also not care about your RCS, so to put RAM coatings on the outside of the missiles would be completely unnecessary, cuz you already don't care about stealth. You would only run externally mounted weapons if you had already dealt with all Anti-Air weapons the enemy had, negating the need for stealth in the first place. Because before that you would never sacrifice your stealth by even the slightest amount in a heavily contested environment, and afterwards, you are in an uncontested environment where stealth doesn't matter, so the mission set of RAM coated missiles would be completely redundant.
@mathewthomason83977 сағат бұрын
There was a concept by Boeing for a stealthy external weapons pod on a f-18E upgrade. Not sure how stealthy the pod would be. It was supposed to be carried centerline.

Cruising through those snow covered valleys trying to avoid detection reminds me of the Clint Eastwood movie 'Firefox' (1982), where he cruises along the Ural Mountain range in the fictional version of the 'MiG-31' trying to avoid Soviet listening stations that detect and report sonic booms.

This was the strategy used by Klingons in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. A cloaked Bird of Prey which was sneakily beneath the Enterprise fired at another Klingon ship, putting the blame on the Enterprise for the attack. A stealth Raptor is like the 21st century equivalent of a cloaked Bird of Prey.
