On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

From what I've heard about the F-22s flight control system, you pretty much remove the 'aviate' part of 'aviate, navigate, communicate' mantra of pilotage. You tell the airplane where you want to be and where you want to point your nose and it puts you there, physics permitting.

How do you think that number compares to all of the American F-22 pilots and all of the flight hours of F-35 pilots? I have no doubt that a 2020 Bugatti Chiron is a more "capable" car than a 2014 Chevy Corvette. But if you get 4 days of training behind the wheel of the Corvette and I only get 30 minutes of training in the Bugatti..........I'm betting that you are going to beat me in a 10 lap race around the SPA in Belgium.

Question: The movie indicated that the F-14 is able to split its thrust. (Adjust engine power separately.) Maverick combined this with left rudder (and I think vertical pitch) to induce a spiral and decrease air speed. Instinctively I would think that this would induce a flat spin, but I just don't know. Does DCS allow you to split the thrust?
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 2 жыл бұрын
Yes DCS does allow it and you’re correct that it would induce a flat spin lol. Mostly because the engines are pretty far apart in the f14, but differential thrust works well with the f15 with the engines tight together.

After rewatching that scene I decided to play around with the asymmetric throttle limiter off pulling back stick and yawing in the same direction of the yaw from the engine and it does sort of induces a spiral like manoeuvre but you bleed air speed soo quickly that it doesn't appear like it does in the movie and like you said it just induces a flat spin.

Interesting info; Aircraft built in 60's thru the 80's were designed to be stable, whereas the newer aircraft are designed to be unstable. If you were to remove the flight control computer from the 5th generation aircraft, and some of the 4th generation fighters, the pilot would not be able to maintain stable flight, and they would have to eject. That's why the Felon is able to make those kind of turns, and the F-14 can't.

The Russian SU 27 planes were built on the same principle, different from the classic weight distribution in airplanes (the center of gravity is not in the front). I think there was a case at Le Bourget when the control system of SU 27 failed and the pilot manually flew the flight program and finished the flight. Of course, it is a matter of pilot skills, but still planes can be controlled without balancing systems in case of emergency.

Felon for sure can do these maneuvers. Su-37 could do them and it’s not a current gen plane. Yes, the “should” have died, but your test has the same issue that the simulator pilots investigating the Sully Hudson landing had: they knew what was going to happen and they were able to anticipate. So, you need to start a fight with him directly adjacent to you, and he can’t immediately react…he needs to delay his reaction. So, they’d be able to survive the first one. But I agree they wouldn’t survive any of the others.

I'm not sure what problems the simulator pilots investigating US Airways 1549 had, but those simulations were simply to answer the question of it was even possible for Sullenberg to make an emergency landing at Teterboro or return to LaGuardia (it should be noted that the NTSB never questioned his decision to land in the Hudson). Once the NTSB added a 35-second delay to the simulation to remove the anticipation of a dual bird strike (35 seconds being how long it took for Sullenbarg and FO Skiles to assess the situation, attempt one engine restart, and decide to ditch), none of those simulation pilots were able to make a successful landing at Teterboro or Laguardia.

My question from the final fight was whether Mav *needed* to engage. The merge was high-aspect, the Tomcat was already pointed towards the carrier, and the Felon away from it. Couldn't he have nosed down slightly and just gunned it? Can't nose over too steep or they'd lose speed in the pullout, but I feel he could've ran to the coverage of his carrier's on-board defenses. CIWS might be optimistic, but surely they could've levied their odds better by getting closer, rather than turning to engage.

My thoughts exactly, he’s almost home free. Tomcat has the top speed advantage too. But here’s another point, the Su had to have already been within range of the carrier group to even be oncoming head on like that… so he should have already been dealing with hell.

Navy pilots are typically taught to keep other aircraft away from the carrier.
@BonesCapone
@BonesCapone Жыл бұрын
@@PinkyPowers The MAR is for the still head-on section of BVR, and is the distance at which you could turn away and just out-range the missile, rather than trying to defeat it with notching, chaff, or simply forcing it into too tight of a turn to hit. The head-on SU only fires 1 front-quarter missile, and he defeats it with a slight pull up and flares. After he defeats that missile, Mav's would have the only ideal opportunity to disengage and bolt - the SU is still gonna take time and more distance to come nose hot again, and you need to be closer for a rear-quarter missile than front. Mav and Rooster's convo was in the earlier situation, where the SU's were not only already flying same direction, but already VERY close. A very different setup than a head-on merge. In that merge, for the SU to get the kill he has to - 1. Pull 180* of turn (the gap is widening) 2. Accelerate back out of the turn (the gap is widening) 3. Reacquire lock on Mav (the gap is widening) 4. Fire the missile off the rail (the gap is widening) 5. Have the missile accelerate past what the F14 is doing for speed to actually close the distance (the gap widens less, then finally starts to close) 6. Have enough flight/burn time to actually catch up to the F14 (the gap is closing, but the distance the missile is trying to reach is where the F14 will be, not where it already is). If we were to bring the speeds and distances WAY down, a tram topped out at 10 mph cannot out run me sprinting at 12 mph, provided I can run an hour, and the distance at start is less than 2 miles. But if I'm running the opposite direction, and it would take me more than 20 minutes to turn around and get back up to speed, the tram doesn't need to run 13 mph to outrun me, it just needs to maintain the 10 mph, because I can only run after it for an hour, and before that hour even starts, they have a 20+ minute headstart.

Maybe the idea is whatever enemy is flying the Su-57s in the movie can't afford to train their pilots and Maverick is just so good of a pilot that the massive difference in airplanes' abilities is cancelled out.

i don't think it would matter because prop engines don't make as much heat as jet engines, then again a gsh-30-1 30 mil. autocannon firing at 1600 rpm would do big hurt to anything unlucky enough to get hit by it sooooooooooooo

Imma be real, I didn't really like Top Gun 2. I wanted a movie where the planes do cool things but the movie focused entirely on the people. The whole time the brass were saying, "Super Hornet vs 5th gen aircraft? What are you, stupid?" The answer would be yes but they forgot that they have plot armour stronger than Stalinium so they can waltz into a military airbase and splash 2 su57s in a F-14

You took the idea of the movie too seriously then. It’s a movie. Not a documentary film. The fact actors got up in jets for some of these scenes and pulled Gs is what made it so good.

You know what is interesting, it wouldn't go down, because non of the planes are actually combat ready, they are all just showcase models and one even crashed. Non of the russian Su-57's are actually "Combat operational" Nor are the engines for it even ready, it is a plane that nearly bankrupted Russia and a project that has failed so badly that the only change to make it providable is by exporting it to other countries as it is literally too expensive for Russia to afford more showcase models

Even though TGM had terrain on their side and was able to take the fight between the mountain, in reality the Falcon has a faster afterburner and well multirole capabilities that something as flat and big as the Tomcat can be a simple target for an R-73 Archer or R-37 Axehead.

I remember F-16 had a hard time dogfighting with late Mig-29s, It wouldn't even stood a chance against a Su-57 or even a Su-27. The reason I suppose is that planes are less of a gun platform but a missle platform nowadays, I don't think we'll ever have dogfights again.
