Lost Lakes

Күн бұрын

In 2018, I found a little piece of paradise that needed to be explored further. Fast forward to spring 2019 and Erin and I were getting ready to do just that. Little did we know, the path would be even more brutal than we imagined.
This full version was edited again from scratch. Some parts have been added, some cut, plus the Q&A at the end. There's a lot of bad filming work which nothing can be done for, but at least I can redo the edit...this trip is special to us.

At first I was so excited to see a new video. Then disappointed it was just an edit. Then watched it and realized two things. 1) this edit was really well done! 2) you two are some the toughest People ever. That icy start is no joke. I'd be in waders or going home. Lol

All of your videos are extremely knowledgeable and excellent! I very much enjoy watching all of your videos. Your videos are giving me education on the art of backcountry canoe camping and fishing, and I'm hoping to see guided trips, or even courses, from the two of you one day ! A few things I really like from your trip videos is that you are wearing your PFD at all times on the water and the fact that you do not rush, your trips, either portaging, setting up camp, fishing or explaining something to your viewers.

I’ve been on two trips like this in my life. The highlights of those trips were in the tents at night dreaming of all the simple pleasures we missed from home, (dry towels, watching the weather from the windows etc) the way Erin continues to look at you with so much love despite you bringing her on such gruelling trips is so pure. You’re such a lucky man. She’s so cute.

@@LostLakes Getting ready to do a winter trip down the Ausable here in Northern MI - it only freezes close to shore but not right now. I took my bark canoe down it and several trips in MI Uppen Penn - much like you did but not nearly the scenery or isolation as your trips in Ontario. I am a very jealous dude. I travel mostly in my cedar canvas but looking at carbon fiber right now and would truly welcome the break in weight. Thanks for posting your awesome vids - keeps the rest of us fired up to get out there and do it.

I wouldn't. I humped boonies like that back in the day and she wasn't voluntary. I believe I'd fly in to that lake, enjoy a couple extra days on the water, catch my fish, and fly for the bug out as well. I mean... if I'm being honest. LOL well done and hats off to them tho.

You two handled all the hard parts of this eight day trip very well and still showed us a beautiful time. Thank you for all that you do, I was especially amazed at the large channel that John covered one day when Erin was resting; huge solid rocky beautiful sides. Must of been lots of fun to paddle through this amazing area. Keep posting these beautiful trips. It has encouraged me to start looking at visiting this area on the north end of Lake Superior during the summer of 2022. I will add you to my prayers so you remain safe in all your travels. I discovered these videos a couple months ago. I downloaded a bunch to bring up with me to a remote cabin I built up the in Thousand Islands area. I love Canada. My folks had a cottage back in late 60's built in Ontario on Farren Lake. Beautiful. What I really enjoy about these videos is neither John or Erin act like experts. They have a lot of good information. Mistakes are made which they talk about, but never an attitude. Just a couple of nice folks with good knowledge out in the wilderness. I watched a guy whos youtube page is "The Lone Wolf". Looked good at first but then I got sooo tired of his attitude and arrogance. So Lost Lakes is such a great change.

Beavers are a blessing and a curse. They can make a nice pond or lake but also choke off flow to a creek or channel. Then opportunistic plants further impede what used to be a stream. Those tough slogs in bogs showed up as navigable water on your map. Indeed they were at one time before beaver dams dried them out. You didn't let that or the ice or the lack of trails stop you. Erin gets bonus boot points. Thank you for sharing this and showing us all what perseverance and adaptive thinking can achieve.

Full props to you guys! I’m from Ontario also, gave a cottage in Northern ontario. I’ve always thought going on a portage trip would be cool... the black flies mosquitoes turn me off. That and all the ice! 💞🇨🇦

Great video! Reminded me of a backpacking trip in Wyoming back in the 1970's.....Invited my childhood buddy and his wife on a 10 day backpack in the Wind River Range. He decided to purchase a pair of used military boots....I tried to recommend a quality pair of hiking boots with Vibram soles that are attached with screws....He ignored my effort and one of his heels dropped off on the second day out....Lol......and she couldn't hike and chew gum at the same time! They were miserable most of the trip....It pays to research and use quality gear....

Three colours of highlighters, you guys are camping nerds! It's awesome. Smart idea to leave a sign in your truck that you're out camping. Ever experience any theft or damage to your vehicle while camping?

You know it! Never thankfully, but worried I'd come back to a wrecked car many times. I heard someone had it happen to them up in the Marshall Lake area (south of Onaman) where I was last summer. Could be dangerous depending on the damage and how remote you are. Have you?

@@LostLakes Thankfully not. I am super conscious of keeping my car free of valuables and nothing in sight. I've heard stories too where peoples cars have been broken into, often tonneau covers on trucks mostly.

@@LostLakes I finally chose a name after a long time thinking and I threw the concept idea at my buddy Louis' wife. She was studying graphic design and she came up with that logo for me. I really liked it. She even drew my new canoe in the exact color and I hadn't told her what I had ordered. Weird. I really like the stained glass look of yours. Did you design that yourself? Really nice! You should get someone to make a real stained glass version for your home!

Thanks a bunch Bud! I stopped the GoPro to get the fish unhooked and thought I restarted it but apparently not. Wasn't too worried about it at the time, thinking there'd be better fish, but little did I know that was the biggest of the trip 😔

Enjoyed the first episodes of that trip and I usually don't watch something the second time but couldn't help myself for this one, it was epic! You mentioned in the video not having much time to fish some of the beautiful lakes, excellent reason to head back! Technical, smechnical, whatever your comfortable with and keeps you out there. lol I am tall, with long legs and I find it hard to kneel. I have done it in rough lake/ocean water but I find my legs, feet and butt go to sleep. I am so preoccupied with being uncomfortable that I find it hard to think about anything else. When I try to unfold after an extended period, walking is not the easiest! haha! Not sure what your talking about when you say " bad filming", saw none of that! Thanks for sharing. :) :)
