They're not randomized: the locations the shards can appear at are preset, but there are multiple options for different configurations. Which configuration you get on any turn is random, but the actual locations themselves aren't random. Speedrunners who train on this game can get the Knuckles levels down in around a minute each since they know where to look.

The Sonic Adventure duology is practically screaming to be remade. These were very ambitious games, but they were hampered by the limitations of the hardware and muddled by the developers' excitement at throwing in all these different gameplay styles. With a graphical upgrade and more focused design, this game could be really fun. As it is, it's a product of its time - uneven and a little glitchy, but there are times when it achieves its potential, and those parts of it hold up pretty well. Adventure crawled so Colors and Generations could walk. But I appreciate what it was trying to do, and in its best moments, that does shine through.

Even other games with glitches of other IPs generally are polished to the point of them being activated on command (like the Mario 64 door skips). This though? Arin isn't doing anything to activate the glitches. His Emerald Coast fall is not on-command, it's a result of crap programming.
