I’m trying this tomorrow. I’ve got 2 11-12 pound birds going into my LSG 20x42. Originally I was going to inject the birds with a butter mixture but think I’ll try the butter paste as demonstrated here. Thanks for all you do!!

I need to try that butter mixture! Your gravy looked really good too and that is a beautiful looking turkey! I can't wait till Thanksgiving after watching this! We always smoke our turkey the same old way for Thanksgiving and it is delicious but I agree, it is fun to switch things up a little! Thanks for some new ideas!😊 🦃

Thanks Alicia. Put the goodies you like in the butter. This is a great technique for any poultry. I could have just had a bowl of that gravy and been happy. Thanks for watching.

Love me some smoked turkey! I do it with full smoke and the trick is to tent foil the bird when its the color you desire. The butter trick under the skin is awesome!

Thanks, Michael. I was very pleased with the way this cook turned out. I don’t let the pit get that hot very often, so it was a big win for me. Thanks for watching.

Great video there Grumpus. That’s something I need to do more is practice with charcoal basket. Thanks again turkey looked delicious
@GrumpusOnFire5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your support J.P. The turkey and fix‘ins turned out great. That basket is good to keep the hot coals off the fire box sides, but as far as “snaking” around… it needs a little work. I’ve re-watched your video and it looks like your basket lit up like mine. I snuffed my fire out, but I’d bet it would have burned all weekend. If you ever get yours to behave… let me know what you did!

That tirned out great Grumpus. Love the garlic butter paste, and loved how you put that gravy together. Yeah boy, that'll eat good. My take on the charcoal basket. I've seen that happen before. I think a solution to prevent that is for LSG to put an air gap in the dividers to prevent the fire heat from radiating through the steel plate to the adjacent charcoal. Dual plates with an inch air gap. If you had a welder could add it yourself or get a buddy to do it. Overall a great holiday turkey cook. Nicely done.

Thanks Phil. The butter under the skin is a game changer, and the gravy… I would be happy with just a bowl of that! I agree with you on the basket. I may have to dust off the old welder and make that thing work. It does do a nice job of containing the coals so they are not right up against the fire box metal, so no worries about the paint blistering from the intense heat. Thanks for watching Phil… and tell them other ‘ifs Grumpus says hey!

OH NOOOOO!!!! You cut off the Popes Nose!!!! (The Tail). My mom would box your ears for that, it's her favorite part of a chicken or turkey. Milk in the gravy is new to me too! I will HAVE to try that one myself

Nice cook ! My main interest was your charcoal basket, though. I have one that is similar, in my Yoder, and my results are almost identical. to yours.

Great tip; like to try that paste. How many hours total did you say it took on pit?

I use this butter method on chicken also. This turkey was 11.6lbs. It surprised me when it finished at 2 hours. I could have pulled it at 1 hour, 45 minutes and it would have been just about right.

Probably do better on that snake method with charcoal briquettes. Lump burns too quick.

Yeah… I’ve tried this quite a few times, with different fuels, with the same results. Basket isn’t exactly meeting expectations. I think I’ve got one more ‘try’ in me so… stay tuned.

Shame about the LSG basket.. I have that on my xmas list for my 20 x 42 offset. I might need to re-think that.
@GrumpusOnFire5 жыл бұрын
Yeah… about that basket. It is useful for containing the coals from direct contact on the fire box metal, so it doesn’t get too hot. But, I don’t think the minion method will work without some modification. Thanks for watching Chris.
