If you leave the bar the first time without finding the knife in the trash can, then you get the alternative ending where you confront Leroy at the bar and you can capture him. If you find the knife the first time, then you get the ending where you confront Leroy at home and it's more difficult to capture him. Usually you have to shoot him dead.
