Gtech AirRam Vacuum. After seeing the adverts on TV I decided to buy one. Your Utube information was very helpful and consistent with many other owner views. As an Engineer I was intrigued with the conical cog/gear problem experienced by many people on the internet. This is defiantly the weak point area of a very good vacuum. I bought a broken Gtech; it had the same cog/gear fault. I stripped the vacuum and found the stripped cog plus the bearings had seized. I am convinced the nylon gear was stripped as a result of the bearings seizing. When the bearing seizes and screwed out of its housing it drops the nylon gear partially disengaging it from the main metal drive gear. The plastic gear is now stripped. I have replaced the metal roller bearings with ‘Top Hat Bronze Bush’. The top hat keeps it located inside the plastic housing. I bought a new nylon gear from ebay. We have been using the vacuum for 2 months and its working fine. If the gearbox fails later I will enlarge the plastic housing and fit a larger roller bearing, ideally with a top-hat outer case. Hope you fine this of some interest Phil.

***** gtech does not provide any gears as a part and opening the product will invalidate the warranty unfortuantely

Thank you for your excellent video. It is the most accurate on KZbin in terms of screw size advice and order of disassembly. Two other professional ones actually break off one of the lower fixings by not undoing one of the screws.

Hi this video was a great help, you can buy the plastic gear from eBay, just purchased mine from there, it cost £25 cheaper that buying a whole new Hoover eBay search (Gtech airram part), you have to also take apart the shaft apart to place the new plastic gear, to take metal shaft apart you have to tap the bearing off, mine is now as good as new.

thanks for this video , Ive replaced my cog just make sure you put it in the right way , it will go in with the gear facing inward making the brushes spin the wrong way . Also there is now a Pet AirRam that has a brass cog but you cant buy it yet . I think the cog is nylon because its sacrificial , if the brushes get cloged and the motor doesnt stop fast enough if could strip both gears or worse .

Thanks for posting, very informative. My Airram started sounding like a small jet plane taking off and now I know why. It is out for repair under warranty. Let's hope they improve this, as it seems to a weak link in what is otherwise a great, easy to use cordless..

In my experience the reason the gear "fails" is because it is only engaged by the tips of the gear teeth on some machines. First of all try adding a PTFE washer, 1mm thick, 27mm outer diameter, and 13mm inner diameter; available on ebay for £1.50. Put this between the cog and the housing, so pushing the big cog closer to the smaller drive cog and and the cogs mesh well. If properly meshed the teeth will never fail. BTW, where the cog fits on the spindle does not affect how it meshes, this is a function of the thickness of the cog and the housing assembly.

Thought I already posted this - but thanks for your video. At least I know what was wrong with mine. Fortunately fixed quickly and painlessly under warranty by Airram direct. Here's hoping they improve that part.

Whats the best way to remove the bearing in order to replace the gear and also what the best grease to use?

Mark 1 airram just went bang lol, now when i hit the power button i get 4 green lights for about 3 seconds then they go off. Obviously, nothing is happening, so my question how do i check if the problem is the battery pack or the motor which has blown?

I assumed this was what was wrong with mine but its not that. Its the drive belt that (I assume) connected the motor to the gear shaft. It's gone... Can't find a spare online anywhere. Anyone know where I can get one? Unfortunately even though I bought the unit from Gtech, I should have sent the card they sent me, back to them, for some reason. As I did not - I do not get the 5 year warranty. Petty - but the get-out-clause must be working well for them.

+Ed Silvester Hi Ed, Please tell me you've managed to find one as mine has ripped! I've looked high and low. Do you by any chance have the part number for it as mine has melt off!!! I can just about make out Gates. Getech are being useless when it comes to this part.
@edsilvester9 жыл бұрын
+Tom Miller I'm really sorry. I gave up and had to buy a whole new unit. Such a waste as it was such a simple potential fix. Gtech were not able to supply the part or tell me where to source it. At least I have a lot of spare parts now!

Ed Silvester Wow, that's ridiculous! Why on earth don't they sell these things. Well if you ever take your new one apart please let me know the part no and I will not give up!

i wonder what an engineering firm would charge to make a batch, if you supplied them with a good one as a pattern to work from? im sure there would be a good market for them if you had to have 50 or so made!! or even buy damaged air rams and repair them!

Replacement part available on Amazon.co.uk - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NU19UYI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 - works really well but when using the video above a) look exactly where the screws mentioned are - yours may be hidden by dust, etc., and b) DO LAY THE PARTS OUT SO THAT YOU KNOW THE ORDER TO RE-ASSEMBLE as sensibly advised in the video.

Thanks for the video. Very bad deign in my opinion. What they should of done is have the motor drive belt directly to the final drive axle. No need for cogs then..
@davidhunternyc19 жыл бұрын
Really? Every knows the hassle of vacuum cleaner belts. Maybe cogs will last longer. The problem is with the plastic drive gear. What a shame. Imagine a Swiss watch made with cheap plastic gears. Oh, what? You can't? That's because most watches are made with metal gears... umm... that turn slowly. Vacuum cleaner gears are subject to hurricane-like forces. This plastic drive gear just will not stand up. Maybe this will open up a market for Gtech AirRam modifiers. The Gtech is a vacuum that deserves to succeed but it is also a vacuum subject to cost cutting. So close yet so far.

The address below (Lib-trade) if you send him your old shaft, he will fix the cog on it and send you the full working part, so much easier then to fix DIY. I did it an the Hoover works as new now. Proffesional e-buyer, honest and helpful, fully recommend to anyone.
