This has been extremely helpful. Better than the cheap stud finder i bought

These magnets are very useful. If you have an old PC or laptop that's going to be thrown out you can find extremely strong magnets in the hard drives. A bit fiddly to get out but cost nothing if the computer is going to the skip. Thanks for the video.

Hi Des, how do you determine how much room there is around the magnet to fix boards to? Would you break a hole to measure one section of the joist?
@21stcenturycaveman333 жыл бұрын
Good question that. I use a chalk line to mark the line of the magnets. This represents the line of the existing fixings so there should be some timber there. I use this as the line to cut the boards and butt them together where they meet. However, it's not an exact science and you may sometimes need to screw either side of your line to hit the joist. If you have a thin screwdriver just poke it through the ceiling and mark where you hit the joist. This will confirm your fixing point. Sometimes there can be problems around the edges so fix with grab adhesive or expanding foam. If you have an artex ceiling spray something like shaving foam on the area you are piercing to catch any debris and always wear a mask. Hope this helps, Des

Very interesting video, I'm thinking of using these hooks indoors for hanging plants. How did the magnet strength hang up against the Artex bathroom ceiling? Thanks in advance.

Hi there and thanks for dropping by. The smaller ones were more than adequate for identifying the joists, The larger ones are simply excellent and there is a strong magnetic attraction. Obviously the magnets will latch on to the nails / screw heads securing the ceiling boards thereby identifying the location and direction of the joists. Light plants shouldn't be a problem with the larger hooks but anything else would need securing with a screw. Note: dangers of screwing into artex ceilings (plse see my vids on this subject). Best wishes, Des

Those magnetic hooks look stupid strong 👍Here's to hoping you put a link to them in the description 😀 Yep. Thanks for that 👍

Hi if I put this on hardwood floor. Will I be able to locate joist? Thanks.
@21stcenturycaveman332 жыл бұрын
Hiya buddy. That will depend upon how thick the hardwood floor is and how far down the fixings are. The bigger, stronger magnets should work a treat I would have thought. Good luck, Des
