Cam's concern about "being a buzzkill" speaks to a truth about how we collectively treat people dealing with loss, grief, trauma, pain, and hardship. People often want to appear supportive more than they actually want to be supportive. Anyone who has dealt with a painful loss, who has fallen on hard times, or has suffered a serious illness or injury knows how people just disappear. It's like there is a secret deadline for you to be "over it", and if you pass that, now you're bringing everyone down. I'm glad they didn't shy away from talking about Cam's story, even though it was sad. It's some real life stuff. Talking about it in a matter of fact way should not be viewed as *negativity*.
@poopfartlord96952 жыл бұрын
There is a time and a place for everything. Being concerned about being a "buzzkill" doesn't speak to anything but the fact that sometimes people don't want to be sad, and that's a perfectly valid attitude. It's inherently negative, and talking about it *might* put a damper on the vibe. Not sure why you think it needs to be not considered negative when it quite obviously is, not everything in life can be positive and happy.
@JH-yj7kk2 жыл бұрын
@@poopfartlord9695 It's a negative thing that happened, yes, but talking about it factually in a situation where someone asked you isn't being negative. It's just saying the truth. There was no reason for Cam to apologize for being a downer. He didn't even bring it up. In my opinion, it was a reflexive, learned reaction. So often, people are made to feel like they need to hide or minimize these events in their lives because others might shun them for "putting a damper on the vibe", as you say. It sucks if you feel like "the vibe" is more important to the people in your life than you are.

This! Since the day after Christmas my life has been a wreck. I lost a close friend who I’ve known for 13 years, two weeks later my aunt (who helped raised me) passed due to neglect at her retirement home, a week after that lost a family member to suicide. While helping with the funerals my mom got sick and was in the hospital for almost a week, and my sister got sick for about a month going in and out of the hospital as well. We just got done with all the funerals and I’m still processing my loss but didn’t take time off from work because my job is short staffed. I was feeling under the weather and left early one night (with relief being at my job) and got called into the office to get a write up, getting told “I know you’re going through a lot but you can’t miss work.” I’m still processing all that I’ve been through since I was the only healthy one durning all of that and helped keep everyone together. But now I feel like it’s too late to grief openly. 😒

@@JH-yj7kk agreed with you. It's not like they are strangers or anything. Cam have known the crews more than us, so i believe he's comfortable talking about his grievances, but probably not to the fans. But im glad Ethan asking him since people shouldn't shy away talking about their grievances.

Everybody telling Ethan to stop when he was asking Cam about his Dad... I had a kind of fucked up childhood and I rarely talk about it, not because I don't want to, but because everybody gets sad when I say anything. It makes me feel excluded from most conversations about family because I feel like I'm being a buzzkill, like Cam was saying. I wish I had a friend like Ethan that wouldn't mind listening to me just like he does with everybody else. If Cam is saying that he's ok talking about it, telling Ethan to stop talking is like saying you don't want Cam to talk about his life. I just think it's kind of fucked up, I dunno...
@tatiabkk2 жыл бұрын
Tw, mention of suicide. Just here to say i can relate to this on so many levels and I agree. My childhood was messed up and I just lost my dad as well, he had addiction problems that no one knew about, he took his life last month. It's up to no one else but Cam if he wants to talk about it or not. People don't want us to talk about it because it makes them uncomfortable when in reality it helps us to be heard. I’d really love to learn more about the crew’s lives outside of the podcast (so long as they are comfortable sharing), it was nice hearing different stories today from them about their lives and families. Sam’s funny squirrel story, Dan’s mom’s career, Cam sharing about his father. I know this was just supposed to be a high episode but it was really great!

Truly appreciated Cam being so open about his father. I lost my dad a year and a half ago to a fentanyl overdose and I’m always scared to tell people how he passed. Similar story, he had an injury, was prescribed opiates, and it all just spiraled from there for most of my childhood. We had a very close relationship and I miss him every day. I appreciate the conversation happening in such a gentle way and without the secretiveness and stigma. Ethan handled it beautifully as well, I wish more people would respond with such compassion. I appreciate the laughs too, one of my favorite episodes to date. Love the ones with the crew just hanging out, having a good time. FAMILY ❤️

Seeing the poll go through and Zack being upset, and Dan saying he didn’t even wanna be apart of it, was soo upsetting. YOU GUYS ARE SUCH A GOOD LOOKING GROUP. I vote for no more polls based on attractiveness pls, so uncomfy.

My dad passed from a fentanyl overdose 8 years ago. I was 18 and it’s still so hard. We love you Cam ❤️
@katrinasmith67202 жыл бұрын
My father passed unexpectedly when I was 13 and I feel Cams reservations talking about it because it “brings down the mood.” There have been times when strangers ask about my dad and I talk like he’s still alive because I don’t want to deal with the whole song/dance that goes with familial death. Anyway, I wanted to thank Cam for his vulnerability/ candidness and Ethan for creating space for/not shying away from talking about death. I used to be really awkward talking about my fathers passing-mostly out of not wanting to be an emotional burden. Nowadays, I’m pretty brazen about it if someone asks because it’s only as awkward as you make it. I have found so much comradery with people my age who also lost their fathers young (I call it dead dads club). Talking about death openly and not having it always be this heavy/emotional thing is so relieving/freeing. Anyway, love ya Cam and welcome(?) to Dead Dads Club.

i understand feeling like the buzzkill. i lost my dad young and now when people ask i tend to try to be satirical and lighthearted about it, but it still makes me uncomfortable when i first have to tell someone and it leads to “oh my god im so sorry what happened?” i was only 5, so its not even a situation i greatly remember and can talk about. i’m 20 now, so i just try to make it a comedic factor. sometimes i do wish i could just pretend he was still alive.

AND I ALSO CALL IT THE DEADS DAD CLUB LMFAOO
@katrinasmith67202 жыл бұрын
@@AmberWilliams yup, I’m the same way. If someone asks what happened, I usually respond pretty frankly, “oh, well he was an idiot and decided to drive drunk. Glad no one else got hurt.” It’ll be 12 years in June, almost half my life without him, and the worst part is my fading memory. Definitely a whole different story losing your dad at 5. Glad to meet another member of the club and I appreciate you sharing 💕 Makes me feel less alone
@AmberWilliams2 жыл бұрын
@@katrinasmith6720 Glad to meet you too! I don’t remember my dad except for one memory I have of him, but it’s nice to learn about him through stories. Then I retell those stories when I’m asked about him lol. Memories may fade, but I hope you know you’ll never truly forget him. I recently lost a friend to drunk driving, so I can understand the anger and sadness you may feel, even though you know they were a good person. I couldn’t imagine losing a family member in that way, though. I hope your coping continues and your grief is healing. Sending so much love towards you and your family. Also, we’re not the buzzkills!
