This time of The Guiding Light was a great, but also a bittersweet time. This was the last year of the 1970s. It was about to turn a page to a new decade, new storylines and new characters. It was happy and sad. But it was still the greatest soap opera of all time.

Hope and Alan being lost in an Island setting, and the show "Fantasy Island" probably inspired the movie "The Blue Lagoon " two years later.

As much as I enjoyed the Douglas Marland and early Pam Long years, the Dobsons' tenure was the best, and 1979 was arguably GL's best year, what with the volatile Roger/Holly/Ed/Rita quadrangle, the story of Phillip's parentage involving Alan/Jackie/Justin/Elizabeth/Mike, the Ben/Eve/Amanda triangle, and the Alan/Hope romance (with a beautiful love theme). I can still remember the episode in which Jackie had the powerful confrontation with Diane in which she criticized her for trying to usurp her position as Alan's wife (as well as her part in breaking up Ben and Eve) which resulted in Jackie's miscarriage.

Rita has the look of a 1940's Hollywood starlet. She looks a little like starlet Gene Tierney.

Seeing Rita in the beginning scene in the gorgeous floral gown/robe reminds me of Joan Bennett in Friz Lang's "Scarlet Street " A classic look. Love it.

@@MrCraigblaze Yes she was! She was the matriarch of the Collins family, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. She was also Naomi, the tragic mother of Barnabas Collins who committed suicide when Barnabas "died" during the 1795 storyline.

In this episode, Alan and Hope were drifting on the wing of the crashed plane and washed up on the island. They managed to salvage Alan's jacket and a canteen. In a later episode they built a shelter of large Palm leaves, vine, and used the airplane wing as a roof.

SoapsNthings I agree. So sad. I would put Jackie's second. But hers is a typical first trimester miscarriage. Rita's and Amanda's pregnancies were advanced.

Cindy Pickett was wonderful as Jackie. I wish she had stayed in the role to the end of 1980 when Elizabeth discovers Jackie is the biological mother of Phillip.

I’m confused - I just watched the 8/22 episode, which has Lainie being discharged and Ed rushing to leave town for a conference, but here, he’s back at the hospital tending to Lainie. Might this be from a few days before the labeled the date?
