It kinda comes back when he raises his voice in anger, but yea, the Shakespearian voice has been gone for some time. As much as I was excited to see Sir Patrick return for Picard, he was way to frail to play a leading role. Half the time he just stood there with an open mouth like he was in shock and speechless at everything It didn't help that each season was completely different to each other and the first two, in my opinion were a complete mess. They should've put Picards "soul" into a new actor at the end of season 1 and carried on future seasons in that way.

Considering Guinan's species are old. I can only guess the fight between Q and Guinan species were probably dates back to the creation of the Universe. However, the condition of the truce might be that Q would be granted near omnipotent power exception only to the Elaurians. Hence when a Q encounters Elaurians they are hesitant and afraid of them.

I once read an interesting interpretation of the Q powers suggesting that the Q are nothing more than manipulators of reality where the El-Aurians have an innate ability to see through the trickery and thus aren't actually affected by it. That it might also have something to do with The Nexus, being a realm of false reality and thus acting as a sort of anchor for the El-Aurians that got to experience it. It's an interesting interpretation overall. The Borg, on the other hand, have no such trickery, no such manipulation of reality, no such power in general other than that of the technology they possess.

Think of it like this: the Ellorians and the Q are top ranked chess players, but the Borg are the large crowd of room temperature IQ guys with baseball bats who showed up at the chess tournament. Collectively, that group of guys can potentially put together a planned out high level game of chess if they had to, but they can also just break the chess board and players with the bats. The Ellorians and Qs can only play really really good chess. Intelligence and mental prowess alone *is* a form through which you can attain power and mastery, but it ironically only works against either other intellectuals or against people of enough “civilization” to play by intellectual rules. The Borg though aren’t here to respect civilization’s rules though - they figure they’ll mull it over after they’ve burned the chess club down.

To be fair, the TNG already established x2 of the Q denizens lived on Earth and produced a daughter who manifested Q-like powers when she matured. So it's not like PIC writers just pulled this one out of the nether regions of the behind. Truth is, we don't know nearly enough about the Q as we should considering their moderate fixation with Humans. One common theory is the Q are some type of Humans from the future.

My guess is the El-Aurians are a type of stabilizing force, or balance to the equation, where Q represents change and chaos and molding reality to their will. El-Aurians are perhaps able to realize and maybe negate the changes Q’s make.

@@Rindain No the El Aurians are nothing special. The only thing unique about them is that they can live for around 600 - 800 years of age. What made Guinan and a handful of other El Aurians special was that they were exposed to the time-bending Nexus that took Captain James Kirk, and left a remnant of these El Aurians within the Nexus itself. Guinan has limited capability to see through time, but nothing more. The only conceivable threat that Guinan would be to a Q or Q himself is if she can see Q's future death. And to a omnipotent immortal being like Q, his own death is inconceivable and paradoxical. Q can't comprehend that he can die. That's why he saw Guinan as a threat. Other than that, the El Aurians are nothing special, and certainly don't have the ability to 'summon' Q. @@samcochran8203 The film clearly has Cochrane state that the Borg stopped the original launch by sabotaging the ship. Laforge and Data both realised that had the Borg not been present, Cochrane would have missed the Vulcan ship by a week. How Earth got assimilated was not by that launch, it was by the Borg assimilating the Earth while the Vulcan ship passed by, which most likely got assimilated as well. Picard's main mission was all along not just First Contact, it was preventing that assimilation from occurring.

This clip was disappointing…if you don’t recognize the ‘subversion of expectation’ boner so many writers have nowadays. If this worked immediately, the show would be far too short. Think of the old Star Trek episodes where almost half the episode would be failed attempts to deal with some obstacle or other. I get that vibe a little here. It could also be a story telling device - maybe Q isn’t a Q right now, maybe the alterations in the timeline have even changed the El Aurians to the point the universal laws and truths they knew are different now, maybe Guinan isn’t as savvy with her abilities as she remembers, they can go a lot of ways with the information in this one clip. I doubt they will be so clever, but the opportunity is there. Finally, and I can’t stress this enough, but The Next Generation itself didn’t become a Star Trek worthy series until the middle to end of the second season for most. We could be standing in the shell of a powerhouse, mad because of the missing varnish and luster on the hull while the whole thing is still being put together. We measure it against the juggernaut that was its predecessors, never considering how most of those shows were panned in their first seasons. Our nostalgia gives the new shows an even larger hurdle to climb, one that is nigh impossible to clear. I’m not saying this is a good show. I will not go that far yet. Still, it is young. The show is still lining up it’s own personal lore and plot. It is also suffering the Star Trek curse, one that struck several shows before they cleared that issue. The worst part is that the writers are in love with a form of storytelling that doesn’t work with the spirit of the Star Trek universe - at least with Starfleet. But what do I know, I’m just a rabbit on KZbin.

@@nicholashernandez4611 I'd try that next time. This scene is either the last scene or second to last scene of the episode. We (the audience) found out Q didn't have his powers like 3 episodes ago. There was no subversion of expectation as the audience is already aware that it most likely won't work. This is the first clue to them (characters of the show) Q is without his powers. You're disappointed that they had such an obvious twist coming. If you'd watch before you complain you'd know there was no twist. It would seem that the writers are clever enough to lay the groundwork for three weeks before the payoff here.

The whole subplot of Guinan's people, Q and the Borg makes no sense. Guinan's people and the Q apparently fought each other on at least somewhat equal terms. But the Borg -- who are just a bit more advanced than the Federation -- were able to overrun and assimilate Guinan's people. But the Q are nearly godlike and can do things like move the Enterprise halfway across the galaxy in an instant or change the gravitational constant of the universe by a thought. So, how can the Borg possibly assimilate a race that can fight the Q on approximately even terms, when the Q could end the Borg with a thought?

I wonder how long this actress had study Whoopie Goldberg and her portrayal of Guinan. This actress has all her mannerisms and even her voicr down pat. If you close your eyes and listen when she talks, she even sounds like Whoopie.

I was going to comment the exact opposite, as if she didn't study her at all. This is NOT the Guinan from TNG. The Guinan in TNG spoke slowly, clearly, and made her point known in few words without all the hippity-hop this actress unecessarily added.
