i really believe that this isn't the best way to learn and appreciate the full tonal possibilities of modes. the way he's putting it, its the same notes arranged in a different order. each mode has its own unique flavour and colour, and the only way, in my humble opinion, to fully appreciate that is to learn the note arrangments (b2, #4, etc...) for every mode in the SAME KEY...that way you can hear the difference between the modes and learn them by association rather than routine patterns

Playing from B using the notes of G major will give you the Phrygian mode. Think of it like this. If you use the notes of C major, the Locrian mode will start and end on B. If you use the notes of D major, the Locrian mode of that key will begin and end on C#. In A major, the Locrian begins and ends on G#. Hope that helps a little.

"nyahaha" - thats good. I like it much better than "muhaha" which I was using. You've revitalized my practise as a super villain. Thanks man (Im kind of a relaxed type of villain but I do have long term goals)

@Ollievarium well if you were to build the family of chords in C major starting on each scale note C D E F G A B by stacking thirds (skipping a note) then you would have: Cmajor 7 = C E G B Dminor7 = D F A C Eminor7 = EGBD Fmajor7=FACE G7= G B D F Amin7 = A C E G Bm7b5 = B D F A look at the intervals: B to D gives a minor 3rd (hence minor) B to F gives a b5 interval B to A gives a min7 put it all together then you get B m7b5 Hoped that helped some

Theres a lot of old comments on here, but you guys make me laugh, the guy is giving a great insight into the modes both musically, if your interested and position wise, if you just want patterns. And all you get is negative comments..LOL, I can understand searching the internet for usful info like this, but spending hours searching and then making nosense comments....heys guys spend more time practicing, or release your own videos

I understand how to use some of the modes but how/ when do I use the dorian and locrian modes? I know I can go by the chord progression but do you know another way?
@lkeller100015 жыл бұрын
You probably thought you were playing phrygian because Locrain and phrygian are the exact same pattern except for one note. For instance in the key of F# like in this video, C is the note that distinguishes Locrian from Phrygian. If he was playing Phrygian it would be C# instead. No matter what key you're in, all you have to do in order to change phrygian into Locrain is flat the 5th degree.

I agree but I also think harmony is important. These notes need more context than just the beat.

@tunglour basically hes using the e minor scale but using f sharp for his root note...
@reneotten22888 жыл бұрын
You should have fixed that at 2m39s! But thanks for the great lesson, I'm gonna practice this. Should this be played over a G major chord?
@spoddie15 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this is the technique that solo guitar heroes use. It's like early monophonic church music. I never understood all these modes, just start a major on another note, until I realised that a song I wrote was in Dorian mode. It's harmony that makes modes.
