Today’s Sick Riff comes courtesy of fingerstyle tapping ninja Yvette Young, who joins us to share the secrets behind the intricate riff to new Covet single Parachute. In the video, Yvette breaks the riff down into four parts to show you how to nail each section, before putting it all together.

Sick Riffs is a Guitar World video series designed to help guitarists affected by the coronavirus. Self-isolating players around the world have each filmed a lesson where they teach you one of their own guitar riffs, up close and personal. If you dig the lesson, we encourage you to buy music and merch from the artist or stream their music.

@@lilshinobu Just practice each section until you mastered it, it’s mainly finger style. After that you could even try learning the full song if you got the patience, this riff is the hardest part tho. I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it if you keep on trying (:

@@lilshinobu All I'm trying to say is that this is essentially only fingerstyle but with open tunings, which is a lot easier when compared to the rest of her songs, which often use two handed tapping mixed in with fingerstyle. I'm not talking about the complexity or uniqueness of her playing, since its pretty much common sense by now that she is an outstanding guitarrist and there is no denial that this is indeed a beautiful melody.

@@lilshinobu Learning Covet head on as a beginner will be stressful. I still remember when I tried learning CHON songs a few years ago, and ofc it wasn't easy, cause my technique was lacking. Its just something you can't avoid when you try to play music like this as a newcomer...

When I first heard the melody of her vocals it felt like I already knew what the next note was at every point. It just felt so familiar though I’ve never heard it before. Then once I learned the lyrics after a few more listens I couldn’t sing along without getting choked up after the first syllable. Weird. Guys I think covet band members are all wizards and put a spell on this song.

I think I may be in love. Definately fascinated and intrigued by you, Yvette. Your are so beautifully unique in how humble you seem to be and how passionate you are about every detail that you put in your music. Which is the other thing, your chord progressions and the breaks in timing throughout all of your music that I've heard. I have to say I'm trying to figure out if I can transpose your tuning for this song to a lower key. I'm afraid the higher tuning is gonna snap my strings off on my acoustic. I figure I could use a capo to reach the true tuning. Not sure, we'll see. I love this song, both versions, however the first time I watched the video of your acoustic version, I almost wept. It's a beautiful song Anyway but stripped down to acoustic and your voice, sheesh, I think I've had that in my playlist for weeks and I feel such a deep sadness from it that it has inspired me to see what I can come up with in either that tuning or my own version. Anyway didn't mean to drone on and on. Just wanted to say I think you're the most talented guitar player and song writer that I've come across in ages. So thank you and keep it coming lol!

Hi I have been playing my acoustic guitar for the last two years after 28 years of no play. I always play on standard and half step down etc. Also sometimes Drop D tuning etc but your alternate tuning, can you describe here what's meant for it?
@BJSepuku
@BJSepuku 4 жыл бұрын
Alternate Tunings allow you to use different chord shapes and fingerings more easily than standard tuning. Many people also find that alternate tunings inspire them to write and play differently than in standart tuning. Yvette often uses Open Tunings, meaning Alternate Tunings that where the strings are tuned like a chord (e.g. Open D).
