Much more work and therefore cost e.g. background checks, social media checks, home visits, etc. goes into the issue and renewal of a FAC than a driving licence. More work = more cost. Simples.

@@KW-qq7nu Not sure what social media checks reveal,especially in my case as I have never ever used them,nor will I. Also,I don't see what home visits achieve every 5 years. For most of my shooting life,never ever had a home visit-that seems to be a very recent fad. What questions do get asked seem to follow a very stereotypical format,such as what to do if there is a misfire plus the officers carrying out the questioning,on being asked,admit to never having owned or used a weapon.

To be honest , at the end of the day ,gun owners will pay this , £400 over five years , £80 a year . The problem is the absolute shocking service that we have to put up with horror stories of up to a year and half for new fac applicants , 7/8 months for shotgun renewals , If any company tried to run a business like this they would very soon be out of business ! There is no guarantee that putting those prices up for a certificate will give us better , faster service ,the money will be milked off and used in other departments, if they can guarantee that the money stays in the firearms dept then yes I can see the point ,.

Advice I read from a lawyer, who had dealt with a number of such cases; if you're in a relationship which looks likely to break down, get your guns out of the house and lodged with an RFD - and without your other half knowing. Advise your local firearms liaison officer by email, enclosing a copy of the receipt from the RFD. Then, *if* your other half later on accuses you of threatening them with your gun, you have the cast iron defence that, at the time of the claimed threat, your gun was in the gun safe of the RFD - and you have a receipt to prove it. Yes, it will cost you so much a week to have the RFD store the gun for you, but look at the possible alternative . . .

I did exactly that last year, she waited till the start of this season ie game shooting and they came and took everything. Three months and not a word after several phone calls nothing. The officer's that turned up were good guys credit to the force not their fault just doing there job .I have the receipts for storage from the previous year £400 quid .

i got my fac around 6 months ago and my fao told me it costs around £500 for the for the police to process it from start to finish so they are running at a massive loss. now i dont know if thats true but thats just what i got told.

I am not against additional costs providing the following is implemented. Service level agreements. For example 6 months for an initial grant 2 months for a renewal 2 weeks for a variation We are in dialogue with Gloucestershire Police OPCC. It’s about the shooting sports working together to promote the sports. Don’t let them divide us no matter what discipline you take part in we are all in this together.

If the shooting community is to pay for the licencing system, then there must be statutory representation from the community regarding its implementation and performance. The original argument for a non fully funded licencing system was that it existed to protect the public, therefore it was right that some of the cost should be met by the public via the cost of the Police. If the shooting community is to pay for this service, then we cannot have the Police determining both the cost and content. That would be a licence to print money and wide open to corruption. A licence scheme which is paid for by a defined community must involve that community in its oversight. The scheme must only pay for the licencing of firearms and must not be used for funding anti terrorist or other associated police activities. The Police must also be prevented from using firearms licencing as either a source of revenue or as instrument of imposing their own polices on the management of civil firearms. The Police are there to enforce the law and no more. There has been a significant amount of "mission creep" in firearms licencing over the recent past, and imposing practices and policies which are not covered by statute. It is high time that all the disparate shooting organisations which will be affected by this initiative to group together and present a united front to the authorities. Too often in the past, infighting between organisations has led to the erosion of traditional rights and practices. This needs to stop, and officialdom needs to understand that they cannot simply keep turning the screw with no challenges.

I'm not a gun owner and to be honest, I'm pretty happy that we have stringent gun laws here in the UK. However, UK Governments have for years been squandering public money and so lots of groups are being squeezed - gun owners, car drivers, home owners, hell even burial costs are going up so even dying is gonna get you. A lot of it I'm sure is about the climate change nonsense that we've been told is our fault but if we're getting shafted, then we should at least get service and value for money.
