I used to travel a lot and play a lot of gigs. So in 2015 I had the idea of buying a RV (a 22 footer) and living and traveling in it for a few years until I sold it (I'm renting a house now). Anyways, although it was fun (and cheap if you were diligent and planned thoroughly; gotta have access to power, water, and sewage for emptying the grey and black water tanks), it caused a bit of headaches when it came to proof of residence, ESPECIALLY for things like buying a gun. Attached to my Drivers License was a California address (my moms house) but I still needed an additional proof of residence (in California you do at least), which was impossible because I didn't actually live at that address (however I would sometimes park there). One of the gun shops I went to had an employee who was perturbed that I couldn't produce an additional proof of residence. I went back and forth with him over options for a while and I got the impression that he didn't want anything to do with me, because I found out later from a buddy of mine that I could just buy a fishing license (which somehow works as an additional proof of residence). When I brought that up to the gun shop employee, he said "Yea you could do that"... I silently thought to myself "Well why didn't you tell me the first time?".🙄

iwanalotamarijuana Competence to safely handle a firearm *is* a necessity to own a firearm, not being able to correctly spell your name *is* an indication you are not competent in general, and a stick *is* an appropriate allowable alternative for the people who are not competent to handle firearms. If you're one of those fucking nutjobs that thinks blind people should be allowed to carry firearms "because equality, because rights" then you're simply fucking stupid and in denial of reality, and there's not much else to say to you.
@WhoIsJoeShmoe8 жыл бұрын
Forget mentally capable, more like whether they're a felon or not. I work at the gun counter in a sporting goods store, and if someone is filling out a 4473 and needs to look at their driver's license to write their address down I find it a little unusual but excusable. But if someone "can't spell" their name or "doesn't know" their date of birth, that would reek of something highly illegal to me. Should I believe that this person has gotten through their life, including any schooling, obtaining that driver's license from the state DMV, or the work they likely do to afford the gun, without having their freaking name and birthday committed to memory? It would seem like they were impersonating someone else or lying about their age in order to obtain a firearm that they presumably couldn't otherwise, and if I were to suspect any fishy business like that I'd have to deny the sale. Very sketchy.
@dead_p1xl9648 жыл бұрын
WhoIsJoeShmoe I really don't care if they're a felon or not. Some felons are bad people, some are not. Having committed a crime in the past doesn't mean you are only going to commit crimes in the future. What you are describing is either fraud (representing yourself as someone you're not) or a straw purchase (buying the weapon for someone else who can't legally own it). Both are already very illegal. I really think it's more important that people who can't spell their name or give the correct date of birth don't have guns than that some guy who got pulled over and charged with assaulting an officer for spitting on a rude cop. Or someone who got locked up for violating probation on a child support charge. There's just no blanket "They were charged with a felony, they're a bad person." There *is* a blanket "They can't spell their name or remember when they were born, they're an idiot or mentally disabled".

I am starting to think you just might be far more dangerous than I am. I know my limitations, and like an adult, do not foolishly try to live beyond them. The good ole boys know this as "Never drive faster than your Angels can fly" You seem to think that anyone not as strong as you doesn't deserve to live. Sociopaths tend to think that way. BTW, I gave up 1911 Kimber, Gp-100, HK-91, Browning Citori and a Tokarev. Reloaing supplies for all the above, 5000+ rounds. Voluntarily. What have you ever scarified to make your life better?
@MW-tv2xj9 жыл бұрын
Darwin was a sociopath? Intelligence is received as evil, sure but it doesn't make it the same. I didn't even kill Taliban bro, I didn't back down but I just never had the chance. I'm a firm believer in euthanasia, if you aren't making our race stronger and better you shouldn't reproduce. So in a sense you shouldn't have been born, it's sounds mean but if our race is to get rid of insane people killing others, it doesn't start with the weapons it starts with you.
@pirobot668beta9 жыл бұрын
The original point I posted on was this: some questions on that most hated of all forms are not 'negotiable'. I agree that some of the disqualifiers are debatable, some just stupid. What fugitive has ever been caught by being honest? Not all Felons are violent... Not all protection orders are legit... Addicts can be treated... But question 11-f, dealing with "..mental defects.." "..court ordered treatment.." and such is a good one. I know, this makes me the peak of Evil to agree with the Fed, but have you read question 11-f? Would you feel good about giving a weapon to a person who has had an involuntary lock-up in a mental hospital? Would you ant an armed psych patient as a neighbor? I wouldn't! Any reasonable, responsible person would feel sick at the idea of an 8 time hospitalized person in control of a gun. I do, and I am that guy! I sold my guns voluntarily after getting out of Hospital. No big-bad gummint came and snatched 'em. I was surprised the Doctors didn't even ask if I had weapons at home! Is being honest about your limitations have to come with a death penalty, MW? BTW, I ran over 12,000 round through my GP-100, competed in Practical Pistol, all manner of bowling-pin/popper shoots and the like. 5000+ rounds on the 1911, 1500+ rounds HK-91 and 2500+ rounds Tokarev. Not once did carry any gun as 'protection'.

@@Ghost1gx knowing how to use a weapon has nothing to do with your education level or ability to spell your name. there are still many cultures, and individuals in places such as america that simply don't celebrate or care about ones birthday, it's not a hard thing to forget unless you're constantly demanded to repeat it there are many individuals still alive today that can't spell their name that at one point served in the military, hell there are medics that can't (wee serving 10 years and only learning the basics during a fight with the VA to get benefits) using "education" as a measuring stick beyond one's ability to use the weaponry in question is absurd. you don't know the inner workings of the rifle, nor can you tell me precisely why the measurements used were used, or why materials in question were determined to be the best compromise even going outside of that, "basic" education varies not only from nation to nation but from state to state..even city to city within a given state the differences are vast even in high powered careers that you'd openly put your life betting that they can save your life or do a job..not all are particularly well educated outside of their particular profession because they don't need it either way, it's far less dangerous than our military training gang members and their tactics ending up on the streets to be used

The form, itself, is not exactly 'standard English'. I have a pretty broad vocabulary and spent my high school summers reading the compiled laws of Michigan ... and still I can see room to make errors on this form. An ex-wife filed a false accusation of domestic violence. That is now illegal to do in Michigan. But, if I just noticed the words "domestic violence", I would have checked the "yes" box. Fortunately, noting that the form was worded in 'legalese', I paid close attention to the exact wording of the questions.

Especially with your haughty delivery. Who the fuck are you to judge someone who may have grown up in extreme poverty or had a learning disability that couldn't be addressed at the time? You are the very fucking reason that we fight so hard to keep guns. You are the reason we help rural 60 year olds fill out their firearms forms. You stand for an elitist paradigm that is totally contrary to freedom or reason. You are the type of person who threw mentally handicapped people into insane asylums during the 60s. I highly suggest you rethink or maybe even think about the shit you believe in. You and people like you are Baby Hitler's in the making. I guarantee you that smart people have done more harm to others than dumb people ever have. What a fucking joke you and your opinions are. You fascist pig.

piquazhang Wow! You sure told me. If you read my comment, you would have noticed that I made no mention as to one's level of education. I was speaking to a basic level of intelligence that is reasonably expected of those who acquire a license or permit to operate, own or otherwise presume personal responsibility whereby either themselves or others may ultimately be placed in harms way or worse. Be it a vehicle, gun, plane, ship or business that can all pose threats in different ways. I myself am a prime example of the countless who have not been afforded the higher levels of education that more affluent people have handed to them. Again, no reference was made on my part as to any person's educational achievements or lack thereof. Just a little common sense as to those who might not be intellectually capable of realizing the full responsibility of gun ownership.
@Imightberiding10 жыл бұрын
W Canaday A very good reason for having the intellectual ability & capacity to thoroughly read & fully understand a document & whatever responsibilities that may come with it, prior to signing one's name. The complete understanding, comprehension & fulfillment of the responsibilities of any contract are of much more significance & importance than the ability to mark an "X" on the dotted line.

That is something that has been changed. The DoJ / ATF has said that the person who is wanting the gun, MUST be the person filling out the 4473, and MUST be the person signing & dating #16 & #17 validating the form. So, if you have a physical disability that prevents you from being able to write; then you are NOT allowed to have someone else complete the form. This policy has been to the Fed. court system, and found that since the core of the 4473 is a test; if the person does not have the physical ability to fill out a simple, then they do not have the physical ability to safely handle a firearm. I too have seen people fill out several forms before they got it right. I have also had to turn customers away, because they could not complete the form on their own.

Thanks for posting this, I didn't realise that buying a firearm is a bit of a ball-ache in some parts of the US. I'm from Britain and hold a firearms license, obviously our gun laws are much more restrictive but when it comes to purchasing a firearm I simply show the gun shop assistant my license and buy the gun, no messing about filling in forms at the shop itself.

Clip is a strip of metal with no springs which holds rounds, and you push the rounds into the guns magazine and you take the clip off the gun onece all the rounds have been pushed in, it's a quicker way of loading am magazine (it sometimes does go into the gun like an M1 Garand, confusing yes). A Magazine is a piece of metal which contains a spring which contains the rounds which attaches, or is inbuilt into the firearm. The spring on the magazine pushes the rounds into the chamber.

Man I wish Gun shops were this friendly, informative & straight forward here in California. Cali gun shops are beyond paranoid even thoe there's layer after layer of laws to prevent someone buying a weapon. It helps all gun owners when shops make sure a citezen gets something they understand and no how to operate.

And to save you the trouble in case you were wondering it's legal to buy a handgun once 18, atleast here in Va, but you can't get it from any ffl directly. I resorted, being 18, to a purchase from a friend for cash. I can't carry openly, without people getting scared, or concealed until 21 but you can still have the gun any other form and pick up a permit once 21.

In Vermont we need to fill this form out (assuming same form/ questions for every state) every time we buy a gun, no permits here. The most common mistake I have seen (filling these out and other customers) is reading County as Country. I have also done an electronic version and would rather do a paper version as the electronic version messed up the formatting on my SS# at the end which resulted in needing to do a paper copy anyway. I can use a computer/ touchscreen pretty well so I can only imagine how others who are not used to using this type of technology everyday would have issues not only filling the form out correctly but using a touchscreen to fill it in.

its got to be a grip to both the signer and the shop, here in GA ( and know you guys are part of this too) it seems every shop has a different way they want it filled out. Most places however are pretty good about telling you want they want, and they check it over to make sure you dont screw up

yeah, had an issue with this recently buying my savage 64. Saw it at Academy for $120, been wanting a .22lr for forever (or a rifle in general) and finding 1,600 rounds for $40 convinced me. So I go through the hassle, and now SA has it all electronic now. Well the issue was my address. It was correct but I was supposed to have it filled out like whats on my SCDL, meh. Still though, if you cant fill that out correctly, you don't need to be buying a firearm.

I have a close friend that lost his FFL in Michigan last year over what one would think were minor paperwork errors. Very rural area, only gun shop around, 2 counties that were the primary customers and lots of people would abbreviate the county name if you didn't specify to them it needed to be fully spelled out. The domestic violence question got a few people too...

Hey, check out FFL Tools from Lewis Tactical, makes it a lot easier to spot and fix mistakes on the 4473, plus you don't have to call in for the background check, it is done online, often in a matter of seconds.

Hi, You should see the paper work we have to fill out down here in Victoria Australia.We have to do a safty training night and you have to do two test. The frist test has about 30 questions on it and you can get 3 wrong. The second test has ten questions on it and you have to all ten right. Then you have fill out a form for a police check to get a license and that will take no sooner then 30 days to get it back. License last for 5 years then you have to fill out a renewal form. Then to buy your first gun it takes another 30 days. So when your first getting into shooting it can take up to 2 months to get your rifle. And thats only for a single action rifle. Simi, pump action and handguns are a different license again.

We got it easy down here in Louisiana. Walk into bass pro. 10-15 mins of paperwork and you walk Home with a gun. That's my experience with long guns.

Florida is similar to Georgia when buying a gun without a Concealed Carry Permit with one exception, there is a mandatory 3 business day waiting period before you can pick up your gun. But if you do have your concealed then you can get it that day.

the 4473 when combined with the FFL log book is a registration. on the 4473 you put all of your info. your social security number is optional. but lets face it your drivers licence number is there so they know who you are. now it doesn't go on the 4473 what you bought. but your info is added to the log book right next to the guns serial number. so all they have to do is pull the 4473 and match it to your info in the log book.
@straightto812 жыл бұрын
Problem I have with the 4473 is lack of space to write some information, no abriviations, but they let us put the number of the year instead of spelling it out, we used to do it like that, but now they will let you put the number of month, etc. In CA we need to have a HSC, Hand Gun Safety Certificate, also proof of residency and of course drivers license, not sure if there's a deal for weapons permits, but we have the 10 day wait and they are holding folks to 11 days.

Cool gun law you have over there in Georgia! Here in Finland we did get tighter laws on 2011, witch included this: An applicant for a firearm licence in Finland must pass background checks which consider criminal and mental records and this is done by your local police department and also required to prove genuine reason to possess a firearm, for example, hunting, target shooting, gun collecting, employment requirements.... then you can have allmost any gun you want for your particular purpose.
