Bring a garand to the range and watch them come out like flies. The one I loved was the 90 year old at the range with his son. He told me the last time he held one was 1951. I gave him 2 enbloc and let him shoot.
@legaleagle123
@legaleagle123 6 жыл бұрын
Well done. So fun to shoot the garand. Had a guy come up and not quite ask to shoot it, but rather hovered around while I was working with it (I had new hand loads I had worked up.) After a few minutes told me I really should get a new plastic stock for it, and it would look and fire much better. I pointed out that based on the serial number this one had been in Europe, and with the date of the rebarrel, likely in Korea. He said that is why it looked old and kind of crappy. He never got to play....

My best M1 range day was when a club member showed up with two grandsons (from Cali.) that had only seen pictures of M1s. So we talked about the safety, charge handle and function. Then I helped load and enbloc and watched him (12 yrs)shoot chunks off a log sitting at the fifty yard line. Then the younger one (10 yrs). The grins were PRICELESS!! Grandpa was worried about the ammo....not me.

In Australia to shoot pistols you gotta have a sorts of licenses and go through not just red tape but about 100 yards of razor wire. I own heaps of rifles and shoot nearly every weekend, reload and cast my own rounds by the thousand and work in a gun store but I'd never shot pistols. A bloke invited me out to the club and let me shoot a mag through his 22 ruger. That was it. A bloke next to us saw that and invited me over too shoot his. A few hundred 22's and 357's later we were good buddies. Asked me if I wanted to shoot a real gun and pulled out his 460 weatherby mag. He wouldn't accept any money, didn't know me from a sack of spuds but then he mentioned he wanted to get into milsurps which I have more then you can poke a stick at, so I took him out next weekend and we shot till our shoulders were blue. Sometimes you just come across great people and can help each other out. Similar thing happened when I travelled through Texas. Went to a range were you can rent guns and I was blasting away and chatting about the guns we can't have and word got around and people were lining up to let me shoot there ar-15s and handguns and all sorts of stuff we can't have. Was a great experience

I let a little kid the shot of his life this weekend. I had 1 round left for my Martini Henry, and he was watching the clouds of smoke with rapt attention. He was probably 10 or so. And I offered him a shot. The big grin on his face after he touched off the round, worth it.

I had one of these experiences lol I was shooting my ruger Redhawk 44 magnum and it's very sentimental to me because it was handed down to me from a family member. A guy at the range wanted to shoot it, and I was like sure man I'll let you shoot one. First thing he did was say hell yeah! And takes the cylinder and spins it as fast as he can and literally "slams" the cylinder and locks it into place with one hand as hard as he can and shot it one handed like an idiot. I cringed so bad I thought my teeth were going to shatter. I'm not picky about my guns, but wow did that piss me off.

This is pretty much the ONLY way to get into shooting in the UK. You can't have a firearm license without experience and have been a member of a rifle club for at least 6 months. So aside from old beaten up club guns the only way to get experience on new things is by other people letting you have a go. Once I got mine I always let people have a go for experience as I was very appreciative of what others let me try out when I started.

This kind of behavior is why I put so much money toward making a private range on a piece of property I bought. I did it up right with covered shooting lanes and all so there would be literally nothing left to be desired from the public ranges around here. Adults should just plain know better than to act the way they do at ranges here. I will say though that when I was about 12 or 13 I went to shoot my .22 at a local range. A guy there let me shoot his AR, AK, and FAL. Because of him letting me squeeze off probably 30 rounds total out of 3 rifles, that's where I became hooked. Turned 25 yesterday, and my collection that began at age 18 is now up to 37 firearms. A good part of it being milsurps/military style.

Couldn't agree more on making "mooching" a two way street, I'm almost always down to swap guns for a few shots even if what I've got is "cooler" to shoot. I also see it as doing my 2A duty to let a young shooter blow off a few rounds because there were countless older shooters that let me try their guns while I was growing up. The one thing that kills me is when people ask to shoot my rifle while I'm clearly in the middle of doing load development. I do most of my initial testing at public ranges, so I'm either fighting the session clock to get groups in or I'm trying to cool my barrel down for the next test. On a couple of occasions I've had my chrono, a notebook and a bunch of boxes of hand loads on my bench and gotten shitty looks from people when I say "sorry I'm in the middle of a test" or "sorry I only loaded enough of each charge weight for the test".

you forgot about one type of person. The crap talker. prime example is I was over at a friend's house and he knows that I carry, so he begs to shoot my pistol. I let him shoot it, and he hit the target all three times, and continues on about how great it was. well we had another friend there and he wanted to shoot, so against my better judgement I let him shoot it. he shot five rounds very slowly, and missed every time. so instead of blaming himself, he starts talking about how much of a piece of junk my pistol is and that I needed to throw it away. so I holstered it and drew putting all eight remaining rounds on two targets, quick fire. he was still claiming that my Glock 22 was a piece of junk and I was just lucky.

Do you FEEL lucky?.....WELL DO YA, PUNK?...LOL, you should've said you get lucky like that about 90-something percent of the time then. I had a boss and his nephew that I worked for/with, small plumbing co. They took me shooting with their pistols and the boss had some type of S&W, the nephew had a Beretta. Both were semi-auto and I didn't do real well with the S&W, but the Beretta, lets just say the nephew was pissed because he couldn't shoot as well as I did, his own weapon. Now THAT, was hilarious. I didn't even ask to shoot because I had just started working with them, in the 90's when Beretta got popular all of a sudden during Lethal Weapon movie making days. Now thinking about it, it must've been the difference in barrel length, how I did better with the Beretta. I think they both thought I wasn't going to do as well as I did, joke was on them bc I had been in the Army and shot what I could whenever I could. Its a passion, I love to target shoot.

I'm still always the guy insisting people come with me and give it a try or offering my guns and ammo to others at the range. Less and less people in the gun community in Michigan now, it's unfortunate.

Able Magawitch: That's Captain Jack Sparrow. Sadly your last sentence is all to true. The gun club I used to belong too had a Youth Day once a year. It was free kids got to shoot everything from bows, black powder, surplus rifles, trap, the PA game commission gave a talk and after all that free barbeque. There was one certified firearms instructor per range, and one adult per firearm. The first hour of Youth Day was a safety course. I can recall many parents giving the dumbest excuses for not taking their kids. 'My kid has never shot a gun before.' 'We don't like guns.' 'If my kid wants to shoot a gun they can do it when they are older.' 'Kids with guns, Sounds like a recipe for disaster.' It was so difficult to get non gun owning parents to bring their children. And you guessed it... every kid was super excited to be there.

I can totally get where you’re coming from. Since I am in Germany I do have just a little bit different perspective on this. Here it may take someone who is interested in getting into fire arms up to 2 years before they can buy one for themselves. So being able to try out and train on different guns of other people can be a very valuable thing. I know that I was very happy that people let me try their different guns and I could - once I acquired the necessary licenses - make an educated decision as to what to buy for myself. Most of the time people will just offer you to try out their guns and you don’t even have to ask them. I really appreciate this kind of comradeship between shooters at least in my club. Now those people who let me try their guns are keen to try mine and of course I let them. Also if people who are not into guns yet ask me if they can try shooting a real gun I let them and often don’t charge the 4 bucks for a box of .22 lr. Now it is kinda hard and expensive for me to get the 6,5x55mm SE cartridges for my Swedish Mauser but if somebody who never shot an AR before wants to pop off 5 rounds of .223 I am not gonna be greedy about the 2 bucks that will cost me if I thus made somebody support gun rights and perhaps get into guns themselves. Now when you live in a country where you can just go to Walmart and buy guns and ammo if you’re old enough and you’re a working adult of course you shouldn’t mooch around and try to get off cheap just by asking people for free stuff. But of course if somebody has a somewhat exotic gun it is cool if you he lets you shoot like 3 rounds with it. As long as there is always an element of giving and taking, a mutual togetherness on the range rather than one part trying to get free fun whilst never providing for the others.

Golfingveteran8888 CONFIRMED! Thinking back... I have been asked by people to let them shoot my guns occasionally if i am shooting something unique. Usually it involves black powder. There was one kid that asked me for some .22 ammo right in the hight of the demand for the stuff. He couldn't find any for any price much less cheap. He had just gotten the rifle for his birthday (18) and had no ammo to even shoot it once. Since his brother was my friend I cut the poor kid a break and helped him out.

I like your idea of being an ambassador. I have done that at the range many times. My boy invited a group of his friends who had never shot guns before and I met him and them at the range. Shooting clay pigeons was the name of the game. Afterwards, One of the guys ordered a Remington 870 off of Gunbroker. Now he owns several shotguns and a MEC hydraulic loader. Especially when shooting clays with a muzzleloader, it draws a crowd. I usually get in a few shots and the rest goes to other people. Good way to meet folks. Each person you "convert" brings over a potential anti-gunner. I think you guys have the right idea.

THANK YOU! Man, I have been shooting USPSA, IDPA, and 3 Gun for 30 years plus having recently retired from 27 years in LE. So, I have always felt like "the gun guy" you talked about. Back before the last Obama Drought when reloading components were tough to come by, I got a GREAT deal on S&B small pistol primers for $20/1000 or $90/5000. My best friend and shooting partner and I literally bought 100,000 primers. We cast our own projectiles, so we were good there. It wasn't long before he and I were the epicenter of the mooch crowd and it always seemed to be the same two guys who always found us at Stage 3 or 4 putting the poor mouth on about "not having enough ammo to finish the match". We helped them out a couple of times, but we weren't even getting our brass back. The following match, two of them came up with the tired old poor mouth, and looked at us like WE were the assholes for turning off the faucet.

I gotta say the coolest thing that happened for me what right before I went into the military. My uncle was talking to the range master telling him that I was trying to get better at shooting. While I was letting the barrel cool down he asked me what I was gonna do. I told him I was hoping to be a corpsman and that I REALLY wanted to go with the marines. He looked at me and said "wait right there." He came back with his AR and two mags. He showed me how the gun worked and the best way to shoot it and aim with irons. It was my first time shooting a military rifle. I've gotta say that was the best ambassador I've ever seen.

Good Gripes guys. Always love your stories and I may not pay enough respect to your website. 9 Years ago I didn't even really take allot of interest in guns as far as buying them or shooting much. I was raised by and Military dad in espionage in Germany and Retired as a Police Office and He was a preacher too, lol. As a young kid I learned real quick while dad was at work that you don't fill casings up and ultimately cost me part of a thumb. Now, I wanted to thank you guys for what you said because in the last 8 years or so I have learned exactly what your talking about. Being respectful, I have been able to shoot some awesome fire arms and I always offer but I don't pay much attention to the moochers. I was at a Range a few years back and I am shooting a .40 I believe, and guy had a 50AE Polished steel that nearly knocked my plugs out. Long story I own one now. The other day a kid offers up his Glock 42, his first gun. I was well, yeah Ill take a shoot at it to find out he wanted the 50. I give him 5 shots, and he asked how many does it hold, 7+1. I got the feeling he thought I was and jerk about it but I said hey, they aren't 25 cents a shot man. Was that being a jerk? I do allot of work on guns now polishing, trigger jobs, cleaning and reloading for 1very trusted friend who knows I respect the loss of fingers. Without guys like you out there, my life would be allot more boring I promise. Shout out to you guys and a few other great channels out there. P.S. Im sorry and I miss cutshell Berry.

Thank you for your comment about letting the kid shoot your .22 with a brick of ammo. This is indeed how we get junior shooters involved. Bravo!

It depends on the person . I don't got no issues telling someone no. But if I like them, and I can tell they are green as far as guns go, or maybe look scared.. that's who I don't mind letting shoot my stuff. Even my ammo.. I'll let em send it if I think I can win them over to the gun cause...

The first time I went to a public range, I rented a Glock 19 and also brought along my 1911 I got from my grandpa. One of the range safety there was giving my some pointers on shooting and noticed my 1911 and asked if he could shoot it. I was going to let him shoot whatever ammo I had on me for helping me, but as soon as I said yes, he pulled a handful of rounds out of his vest pocket and went to town. He was too cool and made the range experience that much better for me.

I love what he said about giving ammo to young interested people. I started shooting a .22 when I was 10 or 11 and I've always took an interest in guns since.

I absolutely have no issue with letting people fire my guns at the range. I can understand where your points are coming from, but I've never experienced the first. The most I've ever had to 'give up' was letting a guy who was showing his mom how to protect herself each shoot a full mag of 5.7 out of my PS90. They LOVED it. Seeing the look on their face when they shoot something cool is always amazing.

I've never had this issue, but it does sound really annoying. Hurray for private land and my own shooting range. :)

Great Video - One son's friend's is originally from India and I took him to a range last year; he said it one was one of best days of his life! I (normally) take my Steyr M95 Carbine (in 8X56r). I keep that around for range moochers - they'll fire a few rounds and then walk away.

I guess I've been fortunate to have not dealt with this yet. I have been at a range on more than one occasion where someone is shooting something really cool and they've let me pop off a few rounds and I've been around to pay it forward a couple of times as well. Good community to be a part of for the most part.
