Good for Jim, “You take whatever time it takes to make the shot!” Guys…thoroughly enjoy these conversations, I can relate…about the same age as Ken with the same philosophy about shooting. I’m a Team Lead for a Church Security Team and would love a compendium of skills and drills pertaining to that discipline where, IMHO, accuracy is paramount! Please keep the information coming, in this world, we need it more than ever!

Thank you for presenting challenges. It's also fun to hear those 'old' names dropped.

re the 'Church Security Drill', Tom Givens has had more students in gunfights than any other instructor of civilains (as far as I know) Around 60 students. All were successful exept for 2-3 and they lost because they weren't carrying a gun at the time. Anyhoo, Tom discovered in talking with these folks that the draw was not part of the fight in any of the scenarios. I guess in each case there was enough time for the student to draw the pistol before the fight actually started. So, while the draw is still an important skill, I think shooting from a ready position is probably a more relevant skill.

In IDPA, the one second add for each point down has taken away the "over emphasis" on speed.

Mr. Hackathorn, What is that church security drill you were talking about? I would like to try that out. I have found great value in the other drills you have come up with! Thanks

If I had to worry that much about a gun designed as an every day carry, I sure as he'll would get a different gun. A 3.5 trigger or less is ok for a target gun, but for a carry gun seems kind of light. I am no expert, but have put thousands of rounds through many different types of handguns and if using the slide release damages the gun, then I never saw it. I have had no pets break on any of my 1911s but did have a duty block break and it caused you to have to put two fingers and squeeze like hell to fire. This was a newer glock issued by a sheriffs Department. When we first went to Simi autos and were allowed to carry what we wanted, many deputies opted for 1911s. Never heard of any problems and some of these took some heavy abuse.

Isn`t there a big difference in a civilian, military and law enforcement context when one thinks of handgun shooting at someone so there should be different drills and standards to accommodate that?

I believe that church drills need to involve prevention and how will the congregation respond if something happens

Unfortunately gentlemen we live in a day and age where experience doesn't count and social media hype rules. It is painful to watch for those of us who know the difference.
