Thank you for watching SUMO PRIME TIME and sending your comments. We love hearing from you so please stay in touch with your comments and suggestions. The Banzuke official listing of ranks has been released and that means the next competition, the New Year's Tournament, is just around the corner. We were able to speak to three rikishi and hear what they had to say about the upcoming contest and their resolutions for the new year. The lone ozeki Takakeisho seems really determined to become the next yokozuna. Kiribayama from Mongolia says he wants to make big impact by winning his first championship. And the up-and-comer Oho wants to make his presence felt by becoming more dominant with his strong pushing attack. The three combatants are all highly motivated and they're ready to make a statement in Tokyo. So please don't forget to tune in to SUMO PRIME TIME for its coverage of the New Year's Tournament. We wish all our sumo fans a Happy New Year and we can't wait to see you again when the first tourney of 2023 gets underway on January 8. Arigato for watching SUMO PRIME TIME in 2022 and looking forward to getting together with all of you for more great sumo in 2023!!

Would it be at all possible to get subtitles on the Japanese JSA channel, please? Even if they're Japanese subtitles we can use auto-translate and get access to even more sumo content. The content available to Western fans is incredibly small, comparatively speaking, and it would be amazing to be able to enjoy even more. Thank you so much! Arigatou gozaimasu!

Honestly, it feels rare to hear from someone like Takakeisho. He rarely ends up i the interview room for things. So to hear straight from the big guy himself is a real treat. I truly help he can push forward, as a Sumo does, and achieve that goal. Been watching sumo now for almost 2 years, and Takakeisho was always someone to enjoy watching. Neat moves and fun takedowns are always a treat, but to me personally, Sumo wrestlers were always the ability to step forward, indomitably, powerfully, and take anything that comes their way while hammering their opponent. Takakeisho embodies that.
@415s30
@415s30 Жыл бұрын
Enjoy? He does the same thing 95% of the time and has zero personality, if you are a one trick pony you have to be like The Geek was at least. Can you imagine this beach ball doing the doyho-iri, it would be ridiculous.
@Blind3866
@Blind3866 Жыл бұрын
@@415s30 Considering Sumo Wrestlers have roughly 80 Kimarite that are recognized in Sumo to be used against their opponents, there is no requirement to use a variety in order to win. Just that you win. SO if a wrestler chooses to use specific kinds of fighting, such as Takakeisho using Tsuki oshi, Oshidashi, and hatakikomi slap downs, then that is fine. Just means you need to be effective at YOUR style of sumo. You hear wrestlers say that all the time. Just going to keep focused and do " My style of Sumo". Thrusting and Pushing are perfectly fine. Sure, in wrestling if your opponent does A, you can do B to counter him. That is not the only answer. Takakeisho's thrusting and pushing is strong, VERY strong. IF you can constantly push your opponent away, step foward, and repeat. You become a wall. Doesn't mean its perfect, but he has made it his style. I think its called Daeshi if I am not mistaken, Constant Forward Movement. That is what a Sumo Wrestler has to do. Move Forward, be unmoveable yourself. This " Beach Ball", as you called them, embodies that
@Lancorian

@@415s30 Yeah, and trying to grab the Mawashi and walk out your opponent is super innovative and interesting, huh? I enjoy Takakeisho, he always gives it all, always aggressive. If he wins the next tournament and becomes Yokozuna he will deserve the rank. Very simple.

@@Blind3866 I've been watching sumo a very long time, he is just plain boring. We were lucky to have incredible sumo for many years, it feels pretty pathetic these days. A yokozuna should be feared, I get no sense of that from these guys. Hakuho was the last that gave me a sense of dread in person, then maybe Ama. Terunofuji was pretty good but he is on his way out.

I love how serious and determined Takakeisho is, and he's such a hard worker. I think its been injuries holding him back more than anything. Though his lack of belt technique can be seen as a liability, he is undoubtedly one of the strongest if not strongest rikishi in the top division. There is something to be said about being the best at what you do. Wishing him all the best with his ambition to become Yokozuna.
@415s30

I don't think he can reach most people's mawashi to be honest, he is like a beach ball. He has to push because he physically can't do anything else in most positions. He is not Yokozuna material, he is just not, I can't imagine him trying to do a dohyo-iri, it would be silly.

To any rikishi reading this: there are so many Western fans out there, supporting you and who are so happy to see their favourite rikishi win. Learning the history and culture behind the sport is a huge part of the reason we love sumo, and we do everything we can to learn about it. Unfortunately there aren't many ways to access the content on KZbin that is available for Japanese fans as there are rarely subs. Some of us are trying to learn Japanese so we are able to understand those videos, but those who can't are sadly unable to access all that content. Keep on doing your thing and know that we support you fully! Hakkeyoi!

Happy New Year to you and your team, Hiro! I am so looking forward to Hatsu and beyond. With so much parity in the sekiwake and komusubi ranks, anything could happen. I'll be pulling for Wakatakakage, Takayasu, and Hoshoryu each to win a Cup this year. I'd like to see all three get promoted to Ozeki. I also want to see Kiribayama get sekiwake. He's deserved it the last couple of basho, but there has been no room for him. I also hope that Wakamotoharu becomes a san'yaku regular. (In my perfect world, he and Wakatakakage would have a yusho playoff.) See you next year!
