I know this is about Axl's girlfriend/wife, but my Dad and I danced to this at my wedding. He died unexpectedly last year. On the way home from his funeral, I was holding his urn in my lap and this song came on. Every time I hear it, it feels like he's sending it to me. I always hear it when I need my Dad the most. Right. I was about to write this too. More specifically, the lyrics were originally a love poem on it's own to Erin. Only later, when Slash and Izzy were working out the new song instrumentally, Axl heard what they were doing and thought that poem would be a good lyric to it. ....however, the poem ends after the 2nd verse. After the guitar solo during the arrangement rehearsals, they didn't know what to do. Axl told the producer: "Where do we go now?" The producer then said say that!.

All of the bands' significant others were in the video as well. I think it's more a culture thing. I was always one who had a mixed bag of friends, and there was never "child" used in relationships to a woman in the more "hip hop" kids. They used it as a friend, or the elders used it straight up. In the rock culture, it was used as "baby." The difference in phrases is such a fascinating thing to be exposed to at a young age... hell, even now. It's just my memories, not a trustworthy measure, at all. This also is not 100% of any one cultural speech. I've heard it all in different settings. Age will do that crap, 🤪🤣.

Wikipedia-During a jam session at the band's house in Sunset Strip, drummer Steven Adler and Slash were warming up and Slash began to play a "circus" melody while making faces at Adler. Rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin asked Slash to play it again. Stradlin came up with some chords, Duff McKagan created a bassline and Adler planned a beat. In his autobiography, Slash said "within an hour my guitar exercise had become something else." Lead singer Axl Rose was listening to the musicians upstairs in his room and was inspired to write lyrics, which he completed by the following afternoon. He based it on his girlfriend Erin Everly (daughter of Don Everly, of the Everly Brothers, and Venetia Stevenson), and declared that Lynyrd Skynyrd served as an inspiration "to make sure that we'd got that heartfelt feeling."

One of the best power ballads written. "Child" is often times used as a term of endearment for someone they love (not being a child). In this case, it is about his girl at the time and their relationship. The song equates the qualities & characteristics of his lover and how she brings back memories of his childhood. The opening is iconic. Slash's opening riff is beautiful and the bass is incredible. The band overall knocked this out of the park and set them on a road to being an iconic band. The entire album, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION set off a chain reaction for this genre of music to be much more genuine. At the time, hair metal was a bit over the top with party anthems, sex, drugs & rock n roll. GnR brought it back down to Earth.

The song is about his then girl friend Erin Everly, but it has deeper meanings as well such as verse 2, "She's got eyes of the bluest skies As if they thought of rain I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain Her hair reminds me of a warm, safe place Where, as a child, I'd hide And pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by" Axl and Erin were very much in love, but had a tumultuous relationship. Also, Axl had a terrible childhood in which he and his sister were abused by his stepfather whom he didn't know was not his biological father until he was older. In this verse he is saying that her hair reminds him of the place where he would hide from his stepfather to escape the abuse.

So many songs are cut down for radio and MTV. Some specific ones that come to mind are Down with the Sickness by Disturbed (a whole verse is cut out), 45 by Shinedown (gun references were removed for MTV until the band asked that it be taken down completely because of the censorship), and Face Down by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (screaming removed from a verse toward the end). I know it has to be frustrating for artists to hear their songs edited for nonsense reasons.

Years later Welcome to the Jungle came on while I was driving home one night. It was 1100 and the DJ said they were new and he couldn’t play them earlier in the day. It came on and I had to stop at a stop sign on a dark road and listen. I was like “What the hell! They are going to be huge”. It was only me in the car but a nice memory.

You should check out Knocking on heavens door it's amazing too. The phrase "child" more refers to a younger woman. Lots of bands back in the 60s and 70s referred to the younger women as " child" like guys would say "baby girl " to their GF. Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ✌️ ☮️

I never thought of a child during this. I thought of the girlfriend. It was a love song. This came out when I was a junior in high-school. And girls loved this song.

He actually refers to himself as a child in only a portion of this song as a reflection on something in his past and how his present made him think of that.
