Mossberg makes the Maverick 88 in the US for $250. Heritage needs to make an affordable side by side in the US.
@arthurbrumagem38448 ай бұрын
Did not know that . May have to get one
@RequisiteFunction8 ай бұрын
Nobody can make an inexpensive double in the US, unless you want a plastic one from Hi Point. The last "cheap" American made SxS was the Ruger Gold Label, and that thing was over $2k, 20 years ago. The only inexpensive American doubles are the used ones at pawn shops and gun stores across the country, from Stevens/Savage or Ithaca made between the 30s and the 80s. Doubles cost more money to make. They're time consuming. They used to be less expensive back in the day when all guns were made with hand fitted and soldered machined components. But today, most guns are using cast parts, polymers and stampings , being assembled on automated equipment. There are too many "man hours" involved in making doubles, that's why the less expensive ones are imported from places with lower labor costs.
@RequisiteFunction8 ай бұрын
Mossberg imports their double barrel shotguns from Turkey. Their cheapest one is about $600. If Mossberg cannot make a cheap double in the States, with all it's years of manufacturing and experience, we cannot expect Heritage to do so. Mossberg literally got it's start by making cheap shotguns. There were companies making bolt-action shotguns from military surplus bolt rifles. mossberg realized he could make a bolt-action shotgun cheaper from the ground up, with all new, lighter parts, and it would be better than the mil conversions. The company's entire business model was to make good shotguns cheaper, and 105 years later, they're still not making their own double barrels. It's just a hard gun to make inexpensively.
@arthurbrumagem38448 ай бұрын
@@RequisiteFunction I’m finding that out. But I have had numerous other mossbergs and they have been fine guns. Thanks for that info 👍👍

Find an old Savage/Stevens 311H 3 inch magnum instead, or any other 311 if you don't mind using 2 3/4 shells only. Or find a used Rossi SxS, i scored a mint Rossi Overland SxS (exposed hammers) a couple years ago for $300.
@Divenity8 ай бұрын
Feel like that price is a bit steep for a basic double barrel shotgun, especially from Heritage... People expect affordable guns from them, I have a hard time justifying spending more than a Mossberg 590 for a basic double barrel from Heritage.
@RequisiteFunction8 ай бұрын
I kind of agree, because Heritage is known for price-point design characteristics. Granted, they are not actually making this shotgun, but if their name is on it, it means they likely approved of the perameters of the build contract, and may have even speced it out. I'm not excusing the price, but it is difficult to fairly compare the price of a double to the price of a pump. Doubles always cost more to make. Unlike every other long arm, doubles are still made the same way they've been made since the hamerless box-lock was invented. There's a lot of machining and a lot of hand-fitment of parts. Theres no cheap way to go about it. People flocked to pumps and bolt-action shotguns after ww2, and since they were cheaper to make , companies didn't bother putting more effort into making doubles cheaper. The Savage 311 would be the last "affordable" American double, and they only achieved that by streamlining the fit and finish so much that, compared to pre-war shotguns, it looks like a prop. Even Mossberg is importing their doubles from Turkey. Their base model Silver Reserve is about $600. If they had a side by side, it would probably be around the same price.

Did you buy your Stoegers like that? The only double I saw they offered was the "defense" one, with two cyl bores. All the Coach guns I had were a combo of improved and modified. There's a little punch-stamping on the bottom of the barrels. The tighter-choked barrel has more punches than the other.

@RequisiteFunction8 ай бұрын
Any double made after 1900 in the States will be able to handle modern ammo. The only problem you run into is trying to run 3" shells, which weren't invented at the time they were built, or in some cases, shooting slugs through a full choke. A 1950-80s Savage 311 (which is probably the most common, used, American shotgun for sale) can handle any 2 3/4" shell that you offer it. Same with any of the other "nitro-proofed" shotguns made with actual steel barrels. Just make sure of your sizing.

@RequisiteFunction8 ай бұрын
@elimanning6520 I think you are correct. Just like China, the quality is dependent on two things: the subcontractor chosen to do the work, and the parameters of the contract. China is more than capable of making quality equipment. But the people contract them to make low quality equipment, because they want to sell at a price point. Case example: I went to the dollar store, and saw a hammer for sale. Granted, it was no Estwing or Vaughn, but it was...a hammer. Now, in the States, you couldn't even fire up the forge for $1 to get started. You'd go through more than $1 worth of steel, wood, sandpaper and packaging before the item ever left the shop. Not to mention labor. China was never really a "gun hub" , in regards to manufacturing anyway. Turkey is the new Belgium when it comes to firearms. It's a cottage industry of dozens of factories making gun parts and a few companies assembling guns from those parts. Belgium was doing exactly this back in the late 1890s and into the 1920s. Belgium made some good guns. They also made a ton of garbage shotguns which rivaled the plagiarism of Kyber Pass firearms. Turkey has some good stuff, and they have some bad...because someone realized they can still profit off garbage. Most people have nothing but praise for the CZ Turkish doubles. As for this thing, IMO it's not worth the price over the CAS-proven Stoeger, doesn't look as finished as the Stoeger (which already isn't a great finish. Someone needs to teach those guys how to block sand). So it is at a price that is in between a CZ and a Stoeger, but appears cheaper than the less expensive of the two. If they want to see this thing move, lower the price or increase the quality of the finish. To be priced between a Stoeger and a CZ, it should look the part.

Dustin, I took the plunge!!!!!! I found this beauty from Prepper Gun Store for about $640.00 this week. I did have to scrounge around online and as far as I could determine, this was the best price I found anywhere. Lots of places were SOLD OUT at or near MSRP. I'm gonna have to sell off some gear to offset it, but I believe it'll be worth it! It'll be my first side by side, and even at that price it might seem expensive. But I've read a lot of comments here and elsewhere, and I think that those prices that get mentioned are pre-pandemic era pricing and availability. However we got here, inflation is REAL and I'm sure both the manufacturer and their industry cohorts want to make some bit of profit. I have other scatterguns and I don't need this one, but from what I've gathered, if I don't find a way to snap this up now, I'll regret it later. Once I get it to the range a few times, I'll pass along my observations. Thanks again for your content, especially this one!!!

With the Stoegers, you can thrash it and not feel bad about ruining something that is appreciating daily. That being said, if I had a pile of Ithaca Hamerless or Stevens 311s sitting around.... Another question, aren't many of the English shotguns bored only for 2.5" shells? I know you said European but I wasn't sure if you were including them. Not like antique gun drop, but on the samples I compared, it was at least a 1/2" difference. This is worth mentioning cus shotgunning is supposed to be a fit and muscle memory thing. Switching between the two fits takes a little readjustment if you plan on doing any CAS style stuff.

Politics are one thing. The other thing is fairness. You're right.

Watch the video that James reeves did on the semi auto that Ukraine bought. (with our money) it didn't survive a 500 round test.

@jesseboutdoors I don't think that's right at all. I know quite a few people who own and love various Turkish made pistols. I also know quite a few people who say they wouldn't buy a Turkish firearm. The folks who wouldn't buy one base their opinions on quality, or perceived lack of quality, from unknown manufacturers. I have never heard politics brought into the conversation. I have watched a lot of KZbin videos where Turkish made firearms have been reviewed or at least discussed, and I have never heard politics brought into the conversation. People I know that have bought Turkish shotguns tend to think they're sub-par quality. KZbin reviews I've seen on Turkish shotguns tend to talk highly of them, but when KZbinrs actually test them they tend to think they're sub-par quality. I've never heard politics brought into the conversation. I do not own any Turkish made guns of any sort, so I can't speak authoritatively on their quality. I don't refuse to buy one, I just haven't. I'm really more of a gun accumulator than I am a gun collector. When I wander into a gun shop I'll probably walk out with whatever firearm(s) that happen to stand up and wave at me. Sooner or later something Turkish will certainly certainly convince me to take it home. Maybe it'll be this Heritage SxS who knows. Point is, any dislike I've ever heard anyone voice about Turkish firearms has been based on quality arguments, even if those arguments were not well founded. In fact, your comment is the first time I've ever heard politics come up. With myself and the folks I know it's all about the Gats. Perhaps you should reevaluate the caliber (see what I did there?) of people you hang out with.

Nice shotgun, it looks like it has an ejector for the empty shells.

It has the typical extractor that pulls them out slightly, but not an ejector.

My Weatherby SA-08 is a made in Turkey. I didn't buy so the fact it's made in Turkey is not at hand. I won it in a Friends of the NRA raffle helps at the Verdi, Nevada Cabellas. It's very nice;y made works great. I see no problems with it.

They need too make one with exposed hammers if they don't already in my opinion

I believe they’re releasing one of those as well.

Good review. Regretfully, at the $630 that I see as the lowest price at the moment it's a hard pass.

someone really needs to come out with a version with external hammers (that's not $1200)
