Gurdjieff on 'How Can One Awaken?'

This video follows on directly from our previous commentary episode on the four states of consciousness. In this section of In Search of the Miraculous Gurdjieff speaks about 'How can one awaken?' and gives advice and instruction for how this can be achieved.
A part of this is the idea of groups. We touched on it briefly in the last episode and explicitly in this episode.

It is very easy, the route for one to follow : one must only stop mind, putting its activities to a zero point. That means - mind must flow out, give its opinions, divisions, dualisms; this should happen only when it is called. Mind can never speak by itself, or insinuate " I ". I is the beginning of the dreaming. When I appears, it must be observed by the same mind. Along the time, we will notice that I appears everytime, with a label, your name, or at random, when you lower the guard state. So, the conflict comes out : a mind observes, the others act compulsively, all speak " I ". When the observing mind gains territory, the eternally-speaking minds will slowly fade away ; some time in the future, all minds will disappear, now you are truly alone. Now you are in Dhyaana without any effort. Thanks for the article, very good.

YOU wrote it for yourself to read, as a reminder (to re-member) of what you have forgotten.” Eckhart Tolle I was just going over my notes from the power of now and came across this idea that everything we read towards awakening we wrote to ourselves. This is a mind blowing idea! There was a movie called memento, and his long-term memory was completely erased, and all he had was five minutes of short term memory, and then so he would not forget again, he tattooed messages all over his body, left himself post it notes, so each time his memory would disappear, he could quickly read the notes and his tattoos to catch up… Perhaps, as we read this book, it would be fun and playful to think that we wrote it to ourselves toremind us to not go back to sleep!

I think the group is a great idea. It's very helpful to compare experiences. Many things become clearer when people try to articulate what they know to be true for them. Both for the experiencer and the fellow truth seekers listening to them. It's an interesting process when you're dedicated on working yourself. Self mastery is not a solitary endeavour which I have verified for myself many times.

A fairly short but profound book that might serve as a complement to Gurdjieff's teachings on this channel is 'Riding the Ox Home' by John Daido Lori (you can find a pdf by searching). It's about catching and taming the ox, which relates to the struggle of self-remembering and staying awake (see the Ten Ox Herding Pictures / Ten Bulls, Zen Buddhism).

I know it’s been a year since you did this video but I wanted to comment. When you said that you were going to do more videos on Gurdjieff in the fourth way, I like that idea I appreciate and enjoy your videos, and I believe Gurdjieff is a very good subject to keep aware of because it really is everything that is REAL. I see you have several videos I’m going to listen, re watch. I still don’t know what the answer to life is, but I believe that to remember One self is as close as you’re gonna get. The mind's dominance is toppled? What nonsense. Human nature is mind and body. The mind is the idea of the body and the body is the object of the mind, they work as one unit. Whatsoever affects the body the mind simultaneously observes it, and makes conclusions depending upon its level of knowledge or understanding. The mind is a thinking thing, comprised of clear ideas and confused ideas. You must know the difference. It's the confused thinking that Eckhart Tolle is talking about. The belief in free will is an obstacle to true knowledge.

dude, thank you! i feel like i've waken up a week ago and am slipping back into sleep definately had similar experience like 10 years ago, got pretty scared cause every one i know attacked me and tried to "put me in my lane" it was right at the start of my career so i think i had no chance of maintaining this state i noticed it helps tremendously to have no money would you recommend reading it in russian?

It’s always better in the original language. So if you know Russian then of course. I know what you mean about the people around you. Lucky I was hard headed and lived like a hermit for a few years while I got through much of the transformation , and had a small group of like minded people which helped. 🙏

Interesting 🤔 I would argue that Gurdjieff attempted to wake Ouspensky up, and if you read Gurdjieff’s Meetings with Remarkable you will discover His journey. It’s loosely biographical.

Didn’t ouspensky at the end say he didn’t think he had gotten anywhere with his work and findings ? Not that it’s not helpful but am I correct in this conclusion about this man and his work ?

Yes, if you read chapter 18 of In Search of The Miraculous, Ouspensky documents his feelings about the work and Gurdjieff there. You can also read accounts of followers about the time following Ouspensky leaving Gurdjieff.

bs....true apophasis or epistrophe can ultimately only be achieved on ones own. I suspect gurdj either didnt know this or is meaning to imply a group or mentor is helpful in nudging or revealing the true method of extracting the pure citta through the jhyana or "burning"
