From Season 4, Episode 03: "Something Beautiful"
He wasn't always Saul Goodman, ace attorney for chemist-turned-meth dealer Walter White. Six years before he begins to represent Albuquerque's most notorious criminal, Goodman is Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself. He's a forceful champion for his low-income clients, an underdog whose morals and ambitions often clash. Jimmy works with private eye Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia cop and recent transplant to the Southwest. Mike has a specialized skill set -- he's a "fixer" of sticky situations -- that Jimmy soon learns to appreciate.

Eventually Walt and Gale went into legitimate business together. They decided to commercialize Gale's superior coffee technology by opening a coffee shop. First this was just to launder money, but the coffee proved so popular they were able to keep expanding until they no longer needed to cook meth. They trained up a couple of replacements and parted ways with Gus amicably. The coffee business kept growing, and when Walt's cancer came back, he left his family a coffee empire that rivaled Starbucks.

Gale's story is such a depressing one. A friendly, highly talented chemist not only endangers himself by voluntarily stepping into the illegal drug trade, but he also seals his fate by insisting to his employer to hire the man who ultimately leads them both to their deaths. Perfect (99%) was certainly the enemy of good (96%).

96% purity was great, it’s what Jesse made for the cartel. But the drive for more, for perfection on Gale and later Gus’s part caused them to bring a wild card into the game, which later proved to be their doom.

I love how professional Gale is, he doesn't flaunt his criminality or do it in a stupid way, he's low key, cautious, and procedural about it. He's not trying to prove anything, he honestly thinks of his work as morally righteous in that he's providing a service in a "safer" way then what he observes in the world around him.

A lot of criminals are like this. They aren’t the villainous characters you see in movies and tv. Criminality merely means you step one foot outside the law. And some can do so and live wholesome, full lives without alerting authorities or harming anyone.

Gus explains in his interview with the DEA that he issued a scholarship and met him through that. I have no doubt he sponsored dozens of students going into the field of (whatever skill you need to make meth) so that he could find the one that was skilled and amenable to his needs. There's no reason he would lie about that, it's an excellent cover story full of plausible deniability.

Maybe I am missed something in Breaking Bad, but it always bothered me that the writers didnt gave a good reason why Gale wants to break bad in the first place. Money of course, but he is way to innocent to choose criminal lifestyle just to get rich. Is there an answer for this in Better Call Saul?

You did miss it. In Breaking Bad there's a scene where Gale explains he's motivated by his libertarian ideals. He believes people are going to seek out methamphetamines regardless of how illegal they are and so he thinks that the meth they buy should be as pure as possible. This scene reinforced that point by highlighting how Gale singlehandedly raised the caliber of Gus's products from 50% purity to 93%.

Question why is purity of upmost importance?. Over half just means you need twice the amount. Which is pretty great if all you need is a lab without contamination(i think the nazj guys got it to 80% and Linda wasn't impressed before Jesse)

@GrandIronTarkus
@GrandIronTarkus Ай бұрын
It's ultimately a plot device. In BB Walter states that a higher purity produces a better yield and creates a stronger product which you can sell for more and to outcompete the competition. When you're dealing with millions of dollars of waste, it can become an issue. It's not as much of a plothole as blue meth being the most pure thing there is, but realistically volume is king which is why the drug is cut with other shit.

@MisterSmith00
@MisterSmith00 2 ай бұрын
The most peculiar thing about this particular relationship is that, while Gus is clearly putting an absurd amount of trust into Gale for his scheme against the Salamancas… …he isn’t deceiving Gale. Gale is not only aware of Gus’s criminal activities; he’s actively trying to involve himself at a deeper level. In “Breaking Bad”, you can sort of understand how that conversation between Gus & Gale went, when Gale tells Walt: “Our customers are going to get their product no matter what, somehow; the least I can do is ensure it’s top quality.” It is a bleak perspective, self-justifying an obviously intelligent person’s involvement with the problem…but Gale owed Gus much of his own success at that point; and it paints an understandable picture. It’s interesting that Gus divulges details to Gale; but seemingly blocks Gale from becoming his primary chemist. You could say that Gus actually cares about Gale enough to prevent him from getting too far into the violent drug trade… …or that Gus is being manipulative, and is making Gale want the position more by denying him; and the lackluster samples were to fuel Gale’s confidence. Knowing Gus, it’s probably both.
@LucianDevine
@LucianDevine 2 ай бұрын
He didn't block Gale from being his primary chemist. He only went out and actively recruited Walt, whom he initially dismissed, because of Gale's insistence. Gus was more than happy with a consistent 96%. Once he'd already hired Walt though, then he was sort of obligated to take Jesse too, if not solely because of the entire batch Gale caused to go bad, certainly partly because of it. Jesse knew Walt's method, and wouldn't have to go through the growing pains that Gale did.
