I don’t mind ecchi as long as there’s a decent story. GoMG has an okay story, but what I felt was the most interesting plot point they introduced, Azure being broken by Utena and pledging herself to her, was immediately shuffled offscreen in favor of doubling the cast size with villains for the villains. I wanted to see how Azure and the rest of Tres Magia dealt with her breaking both in and out of transformation. Would she try and hide it from them? Would she abandon them immediately? If she could break, what would it take for Magenta or Sulfur to break? So many dynamics you could explore, but instead we get a power up offscreen while disposable antagonists pose no threat for four episodes. I just wish they had done more with what they had. That said, if this show gets a second season I’m definitely still watching it. I’ve watched nine seasons of RWBY, five seasons of Miraculous Ladybug, and Shimoneta. Bad and horny has never stopped me before.

The show has a Manga so they've got plenty of material. As someone whose read it, I will say they actually do more characterization stuff down the line. More focus gets put on the relationships between characters with the battles between the two groups being more of a back-drop.

I appreciate the sort of bait and switch this story does with its ecchiness. Granted, the anime go way further with it than the manga does, and doesn't go as deep into the battle damage/gore that the manga does. But, in the manga the ecchiness is mostly just for the lewdness and comedy, but later on is actually starts to get utilized by the narrative for character progression and character relationships. And the characters are great, kinda going into a slice-of-life format with the characters being the driving force and foundation of the story.

Man, hearing the plot synopsis and events that happen in the anime makes it sound actually really good and fun and interesting Kinda a shame that its mostly scantily clad middleschoolers

GOMG is a BDSM comedy and a loving parody of Magical Girls. It has teenage heroines (it has to, since Magical Girls are almost always teenagers), yet it's borderline hentai. Also, men do not seem to exist in the setting. I think it's safe to say that it's not a series that should be taken too seriously. Metaphors for puberty are of course quite common in Magical Girls series, but GOMG has fun making it a lot more obvious (as illustrated early by the moment when Utena involutarily transforms because she was reading a BDSM mag). The fact that the series is full ecchi doesn't mean that the characters are underdeveloped. Sayo/Azure is the most obvious example in this season. She discovers she has fantasies she was unaware of, she struggles with them in vain, to the point of becoming useless and even giving up. She's saved because Utena/Baiser, despite all the things she does to them, has an extremely pure image of Magical Girls and refuses to let her surrender. And then Sayo learns to grow, accept herself and deal with her desires.

Honestly I think that the show would be so much better without the uh specific parts and actually focused on the characters. I personally love Utena and Azure's outside relationship is so interesting to think about it. A magical girl and villain being friends as civilians is a great concept and was one of my favorite parts of the show. I wish there was a show like this without the horny parts T^T

Huh, this was surprising, didn’t expect to see you make any kind of Video on this Show, Regardless, yeah, I see what you mean, I can recognize that this Series isn’t for everyone, however I do still feel like it’s worth checking out if one is curious, it’s important to make your own decisions on things after all. By the way, for clarification, I wouldn’t say that Nero-Alice is Horny for the Magical Girls or anyone really, she is a Child after all, so she does act just as much of a Child as she seems and Series acknowledges that, since she is amongst the only Characters in the Series that always manages to avoid to be apart of all of the Ecchi Moments, She is just more aware of things than most kids her age would, actually I would even say that she might be one of the Smartest Characters in the Series, which is one of the Reasons why she is my Favorite. Anyway, personally, as a Manga-Reader, I do admit, while I did check this Series out for the “Plot”, I did however stay for the Plot, A Plot that, by the way, does get better and more interesting as it goes on, actually apparently the beginning parts of this Series can be considered as the Worst Part of the entire Series and I do feel like this First Season of this Adaptation have only scratched the Surface of the Manga. So, if this Season is as far as you want to go, then that’s fine, it’s perfectly understandable, However, if you’d still be up for another go if a Season 2 does happen, I’d say just go for it, Especially if the lack of overall full-on Fights was one of your major grips with this Season, ‘cause let me tell you, this Series does actually get more Battle-Heavy as it goes on, well in the Manga anyway, one of the reasons for why I am curious to see how a Season 2 would handle things, if that sounds interesting to you, then you just have to hope that there’ll be a Season 2, But anyway, like i said, that’s entirely your choice, whatever you choose is up to you, i just really appreciate that you still made this Video regardless, thank you.

I'd have enjoyed the show a lot more had the cast been older. At least Korisu gets to remain clothed (and even wears a Victorian style bathing suit for the beach episode). I think you're underselling the character development though. It's not going to win awards, but for a 13 episode seasonal show that's also a manga adaption, it does a lot with the hand it's dealt. Utena is a proper character and not a blank slate for audience identification, and the rest of the girls have more depth than the archetypes and under-developed love interests you might find in an isekai, shonen fighting show, or Villainess copycat show. I enjoyed seeing Utena going from shy and insecure, to a novice leader. And her relationship with Kiwi deepens from being unsure how to handle receiving affection, to willingly shielding Kiki from harm during the fight with Sister Gigante. I also enjoyed Utena calling out Venalita's manipulation of the team.

I don't stream shows, but the only thing likely to get in the way of my picking up a disc release (potential region locking excepted) is that I can't just buy for myself, and one of the people who'd be watching cannot read subtitles. Eyesight issues glasses won't fix, and things got in the way of surgery near the last minute that'll make it very hard to ever try again. (They were that stupid.) And this doesn't seem like something which is likely to get an English dub. Hoping, though.

I can tell from the review the echii side made it hard for you to really appreciate the good parts but I do want to give you credit for still being able to be open minded and seemingly fair from your point of view. That said I feel you definitely sold it short in terms of writing and plot. You're not wrong that there is not much, season 1 barely scratches the surface of where it goes in the manga, but there is more than you let on and what is there is done much better than you made it come across in my opinion. Understandable if the echii is a barrier for you. There is a lot of it to get over after all and it's hard to look past it if you have issues with it. This show is not for everyone. I definitely agree with you that the pacing is a bit too fast and sudden. They did try to add a few scenes here and there to pat it out without changing the the story and did a pretty good job of it too, episode 7 especially stands out on this front, but it's still goes really fast in some places. I think more could've been done on this level with this adaptation.

It's kinda ironic that the manga and anime are opposites: the former is more violent/graphic while the latter is lewder/uncensored. Given that the manga's sales boomed after the anime (they ran out of print during this) I think this series is likely to have a second season. If so, I wonder how they'll animate a certain transformation? Overall, I personally found this anime to be a sleeper hit: I came across the anime by happenstance with no prior knowledge besides the cover and synopsis, you can imagine my surprise near the halfway point of the first episode. Surprisingly, the show is rather endearing: the characters have an interesting dynamic, the shadiness of Venalita is intriguing, and the theme of sexual mediation caught my attention. Whenever the manga gets off hiatus, I think wherever the story goes will be interesting.

I should preface this by saying that I did not watch the show or read the manga before watching this review. Comments below are based on what is in the review. The sad thing is this actually sounds like something I might like if the ecchi was toned down and if the remaining fan service actually served the plot and character development. Bubbles being a masochistic sub for the main heroine/villainess provides a great avenue to explore themes of repression, addiction, shame, and self-acceptance as it relates to her character, her team, and the Heroine. The show also seems to set the stage for a refutation of the idolization of others (given the flaws of the PowerPuff Girls) and to accept others' flaws while also being your own person in the best way you can. It sounds like the show goes for quantity of characters way too quickly instead of letting the ones they already have simmer and cook for a minute. Almost like the creator is afraid you'll turn it off if the characters don't keep it maximally titillating. I think the following line best encapsulates my views on this kind of material: "Girly bits are great, but I want the girl they came with too." Titillation without character is just p0rn, and I dont want p0rn.

Episode 6. But yeah, I can see why some were turned off by the series. Ironically, I was watching it on a whim, saw the promotional art and synopsis but nothing else. The series overall is rather endearing: a sort of found family, but with villains. I do hope it gets a season 2 as that'll introduce *that* character.

it's hilarious that ecchi is being labeled onto this show I'd argue there needs to be a word for the middleground of ecchi and hentai at this point because originally the ecchi trope was home to a lot of cliche softcore stuff. They never have sex for instance, while GFMG does.

I have said that Gushing Over Magical Girls didn't have to go the ecchi route. Utena could have simply been recruited as a villain, and struggled to fight the other villains who were trying to force her to kill the magical girls she loved. There would have had to be some kind of MacGuffin to make her want to BE a villain, but it could have worked - as a half-baked grimdark ripoff of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. By making Utena's motivation a sexual perversion of her love for the magical girls, however, the show could be much more positive and even humorous. It also opened up the plot twist of Utena NOT going down the porn route of giving in to her lust and corrupting the magical girls into willing slaves. The relationship between Utena and Sayo and their shared character development is not just the central plot, it's also Utena's motivation. To its credit, once GOMC settled on the thene, it decided to go all out. I agree that this isn't going to be for everyone, and you really shouldn't go into this without knowing what you're getting into. It is definitely not for kids. But by declaring nothing off limits, the author gave himself a lot more freedom to tell the story. I'll also note that Utena's obsession with magical girls could be seen as a nod to the fandom's obsession with the genre, and fanservice in general. Utena breaks the fourth wall a lot, and is very genre savvy. Her obsession nay be twisted, but we can relate to how she tries to deal with it.

i like the show for the story, comedy, characters and the yuri, not for the ecchi, but i love this series, it is best described in a manga edit on the series' subreddit, "Legally it's questionable, Morally it's disgusting, personally i love it!"
