Most people are aware they eat camel in Egypt, but I think the real question is, is it common? Follow along with me and an Egyptian friend of mine as he tries camel (for the first time ever!), and learn about where the camels come from, who eats it, how they eat it, and discover, is it any good?

That's very appetizing. I can not resist the strong feeling to eat that delicious dish you guys ate. I have tried the camel liver and meat before. It is awesome. I 've tried buffalo "Akawy"(pronounced with ein; 3kawy; like 3ayez or 3ayza). It melts in your mouth. But let me add that Camel meat depends on whether there is a butcher selling camel meat in the neighborhood or not cause they're rare and beef is the most common. But still you may find one especially in the local neighborhoods' me call your attention that the area trading the camel is called Abu Rawash. You just mispronounced it. Remarkable video I enjoyed it very much indeed and Mostafa was great assist.

Yes camel meat is delicious, especially 3kawy. But I agree, camel meat is not that common, and beef and chicken are eaten FAR more often than camel meat in Egypt, as I said in the video. Did I mispronounce the market name though? I don't think I did, because the Egyptian guy in the video said it the same way I did 😅 Also I visited the camel market and that is the way people said it there.

I'm not sure about the price for each plate, but the total came to 500 EGP, which I did put near the end of the video. Not sure about the price when compared to other places because I don't eat camel often at all, but I guess they did say the liver was the most expensive meat.

Great video, Gisselle!! Mostafa is good fun, and he entered into the spirit of the video so well. Plenty of background info, and it was interesting that it seems not many Egyptians actually eat camel meat, unless they are in one of the areas where such restaurants exist. That cooking ring, or sag, is unusual but highly efficient and obviously authentic. And wow, your personal chef Yaseen at 14:57 had great professional handling skills with his utensils at such a young age! Good for him! Thank you for yet again letting us into the secrets of real life in Egypt. It's always fascinating!! 😀William

Geisel, I admire your work and I am grateful to you for showcasing the country of my birth but I have a very weak constitution and I was only able to reach 4 minutes into this week’s video. When you started reading what is on the menu, I just could not continue. In 1972, when I went to Cairo for a visit, my beloved late father tricked me into eating cow brain. He said it was fish and after just one bite, I knew it was definitely not fish. To this day I can’t get that awful experience out of my mind. I am glad that he did not also try to trick me into trying camel meat, I don’t know if any member of my family ever did partake of this “delicacy.” Perhaps you can ask Mr Mostafa if this particular dish is part of Egyptian proletarian diet? I certainly don’t know of any person-kith or kin-from Egypt to have consumed camel meat? BTW, your video last week -on Coptic Egypt- was just amazing. You really do research your subject very thoroughly and meticulously. Thank you and looking forward to next Sunday’s presentation.
@Gventures
@Gventures 4 ай бұрын
Oh ahaha, I made a video about cow brains too. I don't think it was bad, but I didn't care for the texture much, to be honest. I don't know when I will see Mostafa next as he works a lot and I will be traveling a wee bit, but I think we kind of answer that question in the video. Camel meat is cheaper than other meats (only the liver is more expensive), so it is a more affordable meat for the working class. But, that being said, as was also mentioned in the video, camel meat is really only eaten in certain areas of Egypt, in these small "pockets" (in cities like Kirdasah and Bilbeis, etc.) Thank you Cherif! I did put a lot of effort, research and work into last weeks video, so I appreciate that you enjoyed it and recognize that 🙏

Camel meat is not common in Egyptian cuisine, because camels are not a part of the culture, it's not present in rural Egypt, it maybe part of bedouin cusine cause it's a common animal there, Kerdasa is close to the desert, so this maybe a reason why it's famous for that meat.

@@Gventures I write in the Egyptian dialect so that your Egyptian dialect improves. Also, when I use Google Translate, it writes the words I write in Arabic, but in English letters. I like that you know that there is a difference between the Saidi dialect in Upper Egypt and the Egyptian dialect in northern Egypt. I am from northern Egypt and I like to say jaml in j. because I feel like it's classier
@Gventures
@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
@@user-lx2kf4ck4p Oh, I don't like or use Franco, actually. Either I speak in English and write in English, or speak in Arabic and write in Arabic. Franco is just a weird, confusing mix of the two, and I don't think it really helps me learn any more Arabic. I'm only learning the Egyptian dialect so you don't really need to be specific about the Egyptian dialect, the only Arabic I know is Egyptian. Also, everyone writes in Franco differently, which can make it confusing to figure out anyway. I like the Egyptian dialect, not a huge fan of the Gulf one but eh, everyone has their preferences I guess.

@Gventures
@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
@@user-lx2kf4ck4p Well, except for that whole "jaml" thing. Lol, but you don't seem to understand what I am actually saying. You can write IN Arabic and it would be in the Egyptian dialect, of course. I know you wouldn't write "kay fahelek" in Arabic because that's not what they say in Egypt. Writing in Franco is weird and messy and everyone writes in Franco differently, even if you are writing in the Egyptian dialect. For example: ana baheb Masr. ana ba7eb Misr. ana bahab Musr. etc. etc. What I am saying is, there's many ways to "write it out" in Franco and it changes depending on who is writing. I just don't like Franco.

Hi Giselle in regard to Camel meat my husband on his tour in Egypt went to restaurants that had Camel on the menu as well as beef ,his tour guide who is Egyptian said that its sad but the Camels are not treated nice in the Camel markets , in hence saying this its like Kangaroo meat they eat here in Australia but like Egypt in certain places as I have said never seen here Melbourne ,this one would upset my sister in law ,in South America they eat Guinea Pigs she had them as pets, as always loved your video and love getting to know stuff till next time take care Hugs Evie xoxo

Yeah, lots of animals are not treated well around the world, it's a sad reality. And it's almost impossible not to upset someone. If someone is vegan or vegetarian, many are upset with anyone who eats meat, be it chicken, cow, camel, or any other type of meat. If someone has a pet cow, or are Hindu, for example, they might be bothered someone is eating beef. Egyptians obviously don't eat cat or dog, but there are many strays living in terrible conditions, so even that is sad. In fact, many people are living in poverty around the world, including some in Egypt, and that is also upsetting. We live in a beautiful but also ugly world.

A few trivia about Camels: 1- In Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries, Camel meat is more precious than any other meat and they only eat young Camel. Old Camel meat is tough to chew 2- When I was in Egypt, Camel was only popular among the poor. Rich people who owned good breed dogs, used to feed their dogs Camel meat because dog food was unavailable then and Camel meat was a lot cheaper. 3- Australia imported 20,000 Camels in the early 1800s to help in transportation and building the country. After the introduction of railroads and trucks, the Camels' Indian handlers released the Camels into the wilderness and became feral in huge numbers. Camels became like wild hogs in the USA and started destroying crops and consuming a lot of water. So The Australian government allowed people to kill as many Camels as they could to control their population.
@Gventures
@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
Yeah there was more information about the age of the camels I thought about including in the video, but then I deemed it unnecessary. But it makes sense, younger animals are always more prized and the meat is always more tender than older animals. I used to live in Australia, I know that about the camels, pretty funny

Even as an egyptian still many of the information in this video were unknown to me but i would like to add that camel kofta is popular too at homes as it is cheaper than regular beef kofta and another thing u probably know is that camels were not originally egyptian , and were not known by the ancient egyptians.. camels came later with the arab occupation and thats why its not so popular among most egyptians .. mostly consumed by people who works in this field or areas were the camels market are u already mentioned that in the video.

Yes it's not found everywhere, but I don't think it's too difficult to find, especially in certain areas. In Giza (specifically in Kirdasah) it is very easy to find. I've also heard that plenty of people eat camel kofta, that's what several of my Egyptian friends have told me

They eat Camel meat all over, here in USA as well --somewhere in Chicago...
@Gventures
@Gventures 4 ай бұрын
Lol I'm from the US and it certainly isn't common to eat camel meat there. Far less common in the US than it is in Egypt, anyhow. But even here, it's only in certain areas where it's more commonplace, such as the area where I filmed this: Kirdasah.

Camel meat in every city in egypt man..just 10 procent mayby from the meat market..kamel meat is tough maybe 3 hours to kok it,that why my mother only bay it to granded with rise as a special dish( kefta with rise in tomato saus) in the very past was camel meat cheper than beef,, so boor families eat it more than beef( i don't know the prices now.cause i live out side of Egypt..camel liver has a very special teast,, sure you should'nt but tomato saus on it,, just oil,high fire,salt,red dray peaper to get the real teast of kamel liver,which is diffrent than beef..have fun

🤣All of the information said in this video was given to us by the man who works in the camel restaurant and lives and grew up in Kirdasah....so I think he knows what he is talking about. We let them prepare it how they normally do, so I guess they do use tomatoes in the sag, crushed with peppers and some seasoning. But other people may do it differently. I accepted it how they normally prepare it there, and it was good 👍

I'm just making it clear, the information given in this video was not something I came up with, but was given by the man who is from Kirdasah, a neighborhood very popular for camel meat in Giza. I am sure he is knowledgeable about the topic as he is from the area and works at a restaurant specializing in camel meat, but others may prepare it differently, sure. Thank you
