The ex boyfriend that was manipulated to kill her mother needs to appeal his case. As I understand it he has diminished mental capacity. I'm sure in his mind he was doing a mercy killing to free Gypsy. Gypsy gets 10 years, he gets life. After all, she was the mastermind.

This may be the 1st time I ever disagreed with Bruce. While I have sadness for what happened to her, EVERYONE forgets about what SHE did to her boyfriend. She convinced a special needs young man to come from states away to KILL HER MOTHER. She stole the money from her mother and sent it to him to get the transportation to her. I feel for her but I think she should have gotten the same sentence. She knew enough to manipulate this boy. Now, she’s out and probably making money hand over fist with the interviews and podcasts. Is there a Son of Sam law? I think the fanfare is disgraceful!

@@genera1013 I think Gypsy’s mother had munchausen by proxy and also was a psychopath. I agree to be feeling free when she entered prison tells that her 20 years with her sick mother was worse than prison. She then did 10 years in prison and has no complaints . So far almost her whole life has been pure hell. In prison she took advantage of schooling, courses, anything she could to learn and get past her grade2 education. Even tho she never went to school before prison they put her at a grade 2 level. She has come a very long way. She would never have survived had she stayed much longer with her mother. She started to argue with her mother about things like not wanting the permanent feeding tube they put in and removed after a certain length of time to renew. It was extremely painful. She was not allowed to go against her mother’s insane medical procedures to keep up her mother’s facades as they were becoming more and more unbearably painful. She might have argued with her mother but was still terrified of what her mother was capable of. After all her mother had full consent, full say involving everything to do with Gypsy’s life. Ppl believed her mother. There was no running away from that. Sad part too is Gypsy believes she has to forgive her and love her bc she was her mother. As far as I’m concerned she owes her mother zilch. Had Gypsy not gone to prison she would be dead by the hands of her mother.

I don’t believe her family as in father/ wife and their daughter and son didn’t know she could walk. They didn’t see her too often as her mother didn’t want them in the picture. If they possible did know that is news to me. Gypsy knew she could walk and of course her mother. As for illnesses Gypsy believed she had cancer and was overjoyed once in prison when told that no, she didn’t have cancer. She jumped for joy saying “you mean I’m not going to die ? So the walking she knew but she wasn’t clear so did believe in her confused states she did have other medical problems her mother had her convinced of. Most especially cancer.

The mom was a career criminal that got away with everything. Apparently she was also abuséd in her family, but we all have the responsibility to heal our traumas in order to not hurt others. She got with Gypsy’s dad when he was just a teenager while she was lying about her age, she committed fraud when her mom died and used her credit cards as she was still alive, she kïlled her step-mom with poison. All of that before leaving her hometown alone with Gypsy. Her family knew all of that and never called the police, they knew Gypsy could walk and didn’t say anything that she was being forced to stay in the chair. So they saw Dee dee going to live isolated with Gypsy and nobody though it would get worst for Gypsy? No wonder she wants nothing to do with her maternal family and I don’t blame her.

No. Unfortunately Gypsy had learned to be manipulative from her mother and is already seeking attention-using her horrific story to make money while seeking the attention of celebrities (Taylor Swift recently) and notoriety from social media interactions. Her new husband’s car is painted with the word “Hitman” on its hood. 😳 Seriously. When the current spotlight moves away from Gypsy, it’s not going to be pretty…it’s likely she’ll suffer some depression & probably divorce, at minimum. Even tough she was the unfortunate victim for many years, it undoubtedly warped her mind-she’s too old at age 32 for her mentality to be significantly changed to understand this world in a normal, healthy way. Nevertheless, I hope Gypsy learns to cope fairly well and have as happy a life as possible. While her sociopathic mother shouldn’t have been murdered-rather, she should’ve been imprisoned for the years of child abuse-I’m not terribly disappointed that her evil life is over. She can’t directly victimize Gypsy anymore, but the deep scars (physical & mental) will likely continue to haunt her for a very long time….perhaps always. 😢

Yay I thought I was going bonkers. The boyfriend was clearly struggling with autism in the interview. Sadly a persons mental state can be their vulnerability making them easier to manipulate. Murder rather than a logical plan like calling the police or telling someone. Considering the hell Gypsy went through it’s seems a bit ironic her saying, ‘I wish him well on his journey.’ (lLife without parole 😮). Surely that highlights how manipulative and cunning Gypsy can be, In order to survive, I would be to. I am glad Gypsy is free, it’s sad so many lives were taken in different ways. We need mental health care professionals. I was expecting books, movies, documentaries maybe a talk show and lots of glamorising of Gypsy and a total glossing over of the ex boyfriend’s very existence. I guess it makes her an even greater survivor if we don’t mention that part. 😊. Thanks Bruce for making me giggle with your reactions.

I refuse to accept that this is a mental illness. People need to STOP calling munchausen by proxy a real mental illness, and use it as an excuse. It's a narcissistic abuser manipulating, and hurting their victim, to continue to control them, and use them for benefits. Those are conscious actions, not mental illness. If a man did this to his girlfriend, would ANYONE call it munchausen by proxy? No, it's just because it's a mother doing it.

Sorry to be nitpicky for a sec . Do you mean munchausen or munchausen-by-proxy? With munchausen you basically poison yourself in order to create illness and more importantly, the help, empathy and praise from others for being so strong. With munchausen-by-proxy you poison someone else into Illness to then claim the empathy and praise from others for "taking care" of them throughout those "difficult" times.. Both are absolutely bonkers.. But there is a distinct difference that changes the baseline of the situation.

I was 15 years old before I realized I was being severely abused by my mother. I never sought help, I never even knew i needed help. As a parental figure, with a child that trusts you and depends on you unconditionally, it is so easy to convince a child that theyre being raised the same way as other children. I'm not surprised that gypsy got older, started to see that her friends arent being raised the same way as she has been, and tragedy struck. It takes a long time to realize you're being abused. If the stars had aligned, this girl very well could have been me. Ive always kept up with this case. I wish her nothing but a happy, semi-normal life. When I first became aware of this case, I didn't know that they were originally from Louisiana. After Katrina, they moved to Missouri, and the mother told all the doctors that the medical records had been destroyed in the hurricane. That just made it easier for her to dupe the doctors. That being said, it only takes one doctor being fooled and going along with it to create the horrors that Gypsy had to endure. There's also the matter of how many victims of Munchausen's By Proxy slip into a sort of Stockholm Syndrome mentality. Gypsy knew she could walk, and she did so when her mother was sleeping, but she so controlled by her mother, she'd revert to being non-ambulatory in her mother's presence.

@holysecret2 I've seen quite a few comments of people going in on him, but my statement comes from more of what SHE said herself. When asked how does she feels about him getting life, she's said on each interview that "she's done her time, and now he has to do his." And the WAY that she says it is almost like 'oh well.' She said she hadn't spoken to him since they were arrested, she has no desire TO speak with him, and she comes off like she has no sympathy for him at all. Actually, she comes off as it's his fault. Yeah, I get you may not want any communication with him for your own well-being, and yeah, I get you may wanna somehow put all this behind you, and yeah, I get that although your mom did horrible things to you, you still love her because she's your mom, but had it not been for YOU ANNNND YOUR mother, that guy wouldn't be doing a life sentence for ki]]ing YOUR mother. Don't try to minimize the part you played just because he's the one who physically did "it." And that's what I get from her when people ask her how she feels about him getting life, and all she got was 8 years. She really has yet to answer the question directly, other than to say, "I did my time, and he has to do his." TO me, that's kinda fkd up because he should've gotten the same amount as she did ( or a 🤏🏼little more) or she should've gotten the same amount as he did ( or a 🤏🏼little less).

This case is nearly the complete opposite of what happened to Maya Kowalski. In Maya's case, she really was sick with something that her doctors at John's Hopkins Children's Hospital had no experience with, so they accused her mother of engaging in Munchausen by proxy while keeping Maya practically prisoner at the hospital (via CPS), denying her effective treatment for her condition, and all while forcing less effective treatments on her. Maya's mother became so distraught that she took her own life, believing in some way that her death might help Maya get free from her imprisonment at JHCH.

The problem is is that the person Gypsy Rose manipulate to commit the murder-that SHE premeditated, is serving life in prison for her. Nick had autistic disorder and had other issues that Gypsy took advantage of to help her have the crime commited. Sounds like he could use a pardon. I guess the difference being that part of prison would be to insure the safety of the populace. She will likely never kill again because she presumably only manipulated someone to kill someone oppressing her to a sever level. Where as the guy could find someone else and they could also convince him to kill. Jail time is not always about punishing people. Sometimes it is about the protection of the public. Which would be my only assumption on why it happened like this. Because otherwise it should have been appealed. You cannot have two people being charged for the same crime getting that vastly difference sentencing. That would I assume be found in issue. Like sure women get lesser sentencing generally but it would be like he gets life, she gets 60 years. Which is pretty close to life. Or he would get without parole and she could get the possibility to. But with such vastly difference sentencing for the same criminal act. That should have been appealed.

My mother was psychologically abusive and at 16, I’d determined the only way to escape the pain was for one of us to die. And I didn’t care which one it was. I’m 58 and just now able to accept love. I’m also still “growing up” because my childhood was missed-talking on the phone with friends (I couldn’t use the phone and she saw to it that I couldn’t make friends). She’d ignore me for days and berate & shame me by telling my stepfather how stupid I was. Since I wasn’t allowed to go upstairs to just get away from this non-stop condemnation, she made sure I could hear every word. Unlike Gypsy, nothing physical happened, but there are too many of us are or have been trapped by an invisible monster with no one to help up and we lose parts of our lives and move through life pretty much trying to be an adult with few people knowing I’m figuring things out as I go and working with so little preparation for the big world. Gypsy likely didn’t kill her mom out of anger so much as she thought this was the only way to be free. I tell people I never moved out. She’d never have allowed it. So the day before my 21st birthday, I escaped. I’m sure it was similar for her.

Can we all agree that he was already on a shady path to a path set to cross with murder, or at least to being a serial ra*ist. She tapped that Monster within, and his existing tendencies were pulled out prematurely , and got put towards serving what imo was a necessary evil. Good Riddance Dee Dee. Gypsy is going to be confused, and swayed by wanting to be a spectacle sort of like she was when Dee Dee used her as a Charm. She is Socially Stunned. At least by 5 years. She was already, "A Media Darling" used for getting handouts and that will haunt her. She'll need that advocate to help her, and those that cluster about her to find boundaries, and help her develop something she can work at, and generate positive content.

In my country, it is likely that she would have received a section 174 discharge where she would have been found guilty of murder but when it came to her sentence, she would not have been given a prison sentence as the judge would likely have found that her life of torture would have been a long enough sentence. I am in South Africa & we thankfully don’t have a jury system. There was quite a famous case where this woman murdered her husband but due to the extreme abuse she had suffered, the fact that she had moved to three different cities, that she had protection orders, that the police had failed to arrest the ex husband numerous times, she planned the murder of her husband & turned herself in. She pleaded guilty & the trial judge accepted her plea but sentenced her famously “to prison, for as long as it takes this court room to empty” as he found that the justice system had failed her.

Some cases are difficult like Ghislaine Maxwell that if she went to a Jury trial, she likely would have had a much longer sentence. Ms. Maxwell only received 20 years. If one is going to weigh in on another country and it's judicial practices, then it is incumbent on them to do some research. One can easily search on the internet regarding the practices of an individual region or country. I do this frequently. For example, I was astonished to realized how the light the sentencing was in the UK for sexual abuse of minors, the average sentence is between 6-8 years, but that is their system. In my second home-a country in Central America- we have many people who have escaped from South Africa. Some of their experiences are really horrifying there, it is anything but a law abiding part of the world. I'm impressed with the resolve and integrity of the people from South Africa, they gave up a lot to leave their beautiful part of the world to rebuild their lives.

He didn’t decide to stab her mom. Gypsy knew he was on the extreme end of the autism spectrum and knew she could manipulate him to do her bidding because he was in love with her. What happened to her was terrible, but you have to consider that Gypsy spent her life learning how to manipulate people, pretending to be something she’s not, and getting attention and gifts for it. It was forced upon her, but she grew up and, it turns out, is very intelligent. You can’t tell me that she didn’t know she could walk until just before she had her mother murdered by her boyfriend who she manipulated into the act. He doesn’t deserve life in prison and now, he’s given her her freedom from her mother, and she married to another man and free while the boy rots in prison for life without parole. If she has any soul, she will do anything she can to help him in his appeal. She was complicit and the sentences should have been similar. The over-zealous, pencil-necked prosecutor claiming that Justice was served by sending him to prison for life is disgusting. He crafted a narrative to lock away a simpleminded, socially disconnected boy who was in love with Gypsy enough to do anything for her. And for you to make fun of the way he looks and the fact that he’s locked up with evil people is disgusting as well. The Justice system in the US is so stupid. I mean literally lacking intelligence. She used him. And for her to say that he’s doing his time for his part and she did her time is absolutely atrocious of her. He’s doing his time and her time as well. What happened to her by way of her mother is disgusting, but she is an actor. She knew she what she was doing when she used him to murder her mother and then she’s going to leave that poor autistic boy in prison to rot while she’s going on to enjoy her life and everyone is happy. This is so f*cked. If this was an escape for her, then Nicholas set her free. He shouldn’t be imprisoned for any longer than her. Imagine how he feels knowing all of this. It’s shameful. And she should feel ashamed of herself for leaving him in there. It’s amazing that Bruce can say in one breath that some people need a good killing, then act like it’s funny that Nicholas is locked up for life with “Bubba” as though he did something that was any more wrong than her is hypocritical. Remember that they ran together. They hid together. They committed the same crime together. The one thing he says that makes sense is that he didn’t deserve life. But at the same time he cracks his jokes about being locked up with Bubba. Disgusting. And she doesn’t need any job skills. She’s going to write a book, she’s getting paid for interviews, and she’s famous at this point. There are a million ways she can make money off of this. And her husband is working, I’m sure. She’ll never have to work a day in her life if she doesn’t want to. I’ve gone from liking Bruce to realizing that he’s a real prick who loves to make fun of *certain* people for being imprisoned and thinking he’s really funny. He’s sitting in his little chair saying that this was on the line of being justified but he hardly mentions that Nicholas was on the line of justified in what he did. So somehow she’s justified in manipulating him Nicholas into doing the dirty work, but she’s not as culpable for what happened or, somehow, he’s more responsible. She was right there in the house. She cleaned up the blood in the nude for him supposedly. She had sex with him right after it happened. But somehow he’s the sick one and she she’s free. It’s all wrong. He should be out as well if she is. Or at least he should have a release date. And as far as that prosecutor goes, he’s was just looking for another gold badge and did his best to gloss right over the fact that he’s a simpleton and extremely impressionable. Especially by a girl he’s in love with who’s been tortured by her mother for years and is extremely intelligent behind all the facade. That prosecutor is a piece of garbage who went full on after an already impaired boy and he acts proud of himself. I see his face and I want to throw up all over it and laugh my a** off right in front of him. These prosecutors in the US are disgusting people. There’s nothing funny about what happened to that boy. Think about the rest of his life and the sacrifice he made for her and how he’s been left alone now and left behind after he did her bidding. She manipulated him because she learned how to do that from her mother. Remember Nicholas.

On the other hand, wasn’t he old enough to take his own decisions? Theoretically, at least, he could have said “There’s no way I’m doing a murder but I’ll help you run away”. I think I read though, that he didn’t have a penny to his name and he lived a long way away, so he could not practically have been any more than an online friend. EDIT. I agree that he should probably have got out on the same day she did - unless he’s dangerous and will murder again in the future.

Apparently the killing turned him on. I think one condition of murdering her mother is gypsy would have sex with him directly after. This is the reason for his sentence. @@Woodman-Spare-that-tree Yes. I agree that he was physically old enough to make the decision, and he did. The issue that the prosecutor skirted in the trial was his mental age. Mentally, he was like a child. And the prosecutor did everything he could to encourage the jury to disregard this detail. He painted him as a monster. And Gypsy was an adult as well. However; it turns out that, through all of the behaving like a child and acting like she was mentally delayed as well, is actually extremely intelligent. So you have to ask yourself why someone with the mental acuity of an adult would want to be in a relationship with someone with the mental capacity of a child. Mentally, Gypsy is normal. This isn’t a case of two extremely autistic people finding each other and having a relationship. This was a very smart woman who realized that she could use a mentally challenged man to do for her what she didn’t want to risk herself. Look at her husband now. He’s a teacher. They’re on the same level. She never intended on staying with Nicholas. She led him into the situation and he’s the one spending his life in prison now while she’s free and married to a new man. This was her plan. I’ll say again that what happened to her as a child was terrible and her mother was terrible. But all of what I just mentioned should have been considered in court. But she even testified against him for the prosecution. Though she did admit that it was her plan, she testified against him for a lighter sentence. That’s atrocious. His trial was so unfair.

The fact that she’s at all okay with that and can sleep at night tells me all I need to know about her.

Crazy! I just watched Mommy Dead and Dearest. Gypsy's mom and mine could have started a bridge club. Mine joined a cult when I was 14 and sold me (my innocence) to the leader for $1000 and an apartment. Worst few months of my life. I am still suffering the effects of what happened to me. She stuck around for the trial while the cameras and newspapers were around and then she told me I brought shame to the family. I was homeless at 16, living in a tent in winter, by a lake. Facticious Disorder is one of the most destructive mental health disorders, IMO. I've tried forgiving her. But my suffering runs too deep. She made it clear since I was a child, that she never wanted me. I loved with my grandmother until I was 11 when she passed away. I was and am so thankful for those 11 years of a normal life.

I have followed this case since it happened and my heart breaks for her. Dee Dee had a serious psychological issue and unfortunately Gypsy Rose to the brunt of it. Dee Dee used to CHAIN her to the bed to prevent her from trying to leave. The medication she forced Gypsy Rose to take (Depakote) rotted her teeth out, and she didn't even need it. The former boyfriend is autistic, so I believe he was unfairly punished for his involvement in the crime. I'm extremely disappointed in the health care providers she was taken to during her time with Dee Dee but she moved place to place and they could never find her previous health records, so they were just taking the mom's word. But I am very happy she's getting to live her own life now.

Yeah … honestly, I think I’m on the fence. I sympathize with Gypsy, but can’t understand or agree to her role in murdering her Mother. She’s run away before, and although her Mother found her and forced her home, her running away, finding a boyfriend on Christian Mingle, hiding that relationship and sneaking to meet up with him, makes me think that she was aware and had the wherewithal; so why couldn’t she have run away to the Police? To report her Mother? Gypsy learned (probably unintentionally) the art of manipulation from her Mother I’m sure. So with Nick’s IQ, autism and struggles he may have had mentally, I believe she manipulated him for her gain. He really loved her and killed her mother FOR her. To “protect” her. So for him to get life vs her 8-10 years and for her to basically say, “I did my time; he has to do his and don’t drop the soap” basically, just seemed so cold and cruel. I think leniency should have been shown to Nick, the way it was done so, for Gypsy.
